In the past we’ve been seeing more and more students join LinkedIn, but now we are actually hitting a critical mass. There are more than X million students and recent grads on LinkedIn globally. It’s our fastest growing audience and one of our most engaged. We aren’t the only ones seeing the growth, other analysts are seeing it too. The Achievers recently published data last year saying that “Compared to two years ago, the number of students using LinkedIn to find job opportunities has increased by 700%”DATA:“Compared to two years ago, the number of college students using LinkedIn to find job opportunities has increased by 700%.”Experience and Achievers surveyed nearly 8,000 soon-to-be college graduates of 2012 and 2013. Young Hans walks in with his father, and club members rise to congratulate him on his upcoming college graduation. They ask where he is thinking of working after his last semester, and subsequent world tour. When he replies with a few ideas, they offer him advice and let him know they will make introductions for him in companies in the industry Hans wants to pursue. After Hansreturns from his world tour, he has interviews lined up at a number of prestigious companies, where his father's connections are ready to give him the benefit of the doubt. Let's unpack this scenario to see how Insights, Connections and Cohorts can level the playing field for students who aren't as lucky as Hans. So what does Hans have as a result of being lucky?
Hans has spent his life steeped in the tea of daily, effective behaviors for successful professionals. He overhears dinner table and country club conversations about work challenges, competition, the success stories and failures of his parents colleagues and friends. He has many people he can reach out to for advice on large and small decisions, techniques - both social and technical in nature - best practices for specific situations. He is constantly hearing about the RANGE of opportunities – what’s trending – and opinions about good options. He is "one of the club" and is readily accepted into their social and professional events and gatherings. He has credentials that open doors for him and access to a network of people who will make sure he can walk through that door.
En algauwzie je dat Hans eenprachtignetwerkheeftgevormd met voor hem relevantecontacten, opgebouwd via zijnnetwerk van huisuit.
On the sidelines, a busboy named Lars watches Hans walk through the country club that snowy day. Lars is the first in his family to attend college, and has moved frequently in his life with his family.
De sterrenzijn de verschillendemogelijkheden die erzich in de wereldvoor hem voordoen, maar hij is ernietmeegelinked. This is what Lars’ network looks like. There are bright spots of opportunity everywhere, but he’s not connected to them. And, unlike Sebastian, he doesn’t know where to start to make these connections.
Script: Before we talk about best practices, let’s see what students are doing on LinkedIn. This new generation of students, called Gen “C”, which stands for Content, is very tech-savvy; social is their native habitat. They grew up using Social Networks; they primarily use LinkedIn to research companies, explore trends, and get inside scoop on careers from classmates, friends & family. Students, by definition, are active candidates. They are looking for a job and if the info is out there, they will find it. Their behaviors are very different from passive candidates. This generation is quick, connected and engaged. Surprisingly, they know exactly what to do when they join LinkedIn. Denkaaneen content strategie. At the heart of it all, Larscan build a professional profile on LinkedIn. It’s so much more than just a resume. It lists his accomplishments in school, his internships, projects he’s created in our new portfolio section – and even the things he has shared and what his connections have endorsed him for. Investing in his profile pays huge dividends. He can use it to apply for jobs, and opportunities start to find HIM. When he checks in using his profile at a career fair – he can get immediate feedback from companies. Script:First order of business is to establish an identity. The LinkedIn profile was previously a basic “title and company” form. This profile didn’t jive with this new “Generation C” where content matters. They spoke, we heard, and we changed. The LinkedIn profile now enables students to express their creativity; they can enter information about their education such as test scores, schools, degree of study as well as media content. Many of these facets are now searchable and targetable to help you find and reach out to the right candidate. Students can now create rich profiles even without actual work experience.
His university is hugeI’m not talking just about size – although with 45k students and alumni on LinkedIn- that’s also true. I mean it’s a huge source of insight, support and path-finding for Lars. We launched University Pages two months ago - working closely with schools around the world to build pages that provide incredible insights – and the voice of the schools. Also features like Notable Alumni – to inspire students with the success of graduates. One of the most powerful features is the ability to explore the career outcomes of graduates of that school. And to helpLars find his path, using insights from people who have walked in his shoes. Profielen van kandidaten / studentenzijn steeds vollediger. Zesluitenzichaanbijuniversiteitenwat het doorzoeken van LinkedIn steeds beter en nauwkeurigermaakt.
Lars knows that after he graduates, he wants to live in Enschede – where his family is. Clicks on Enschede– and all the other facets immediately update to show information about only those LinkedIn members who live in Enschede. Script: After establishing an identity on LinkedIn, students will look to connect with peers, professors and mentors to learn more about career opportunities. We have 200M members on LinkedIn. We know where they went to school, what they studied, where they worked and where they are now. We want to surface this information to students.Have you heard of the School Alumni tool? We built this solution to help students discover their career path. In this instance, pretending to be Gabriella, a current student at University of Durham. I went to the School Alumni tool and through filters found who at <COMPANY> also went to University of Durham… what field they studied, what are their top skills, which function to they work in. The tool also gives students a list of alumni from their school in their network. These are your brand ambassadors. Students will 1>reach out to alumni for advice and counsel, 2> leverage the networks of their parents, family, friends, and mentors to get a head start on their career planning, and 3> stay connected and establish lifelong relationships with alumni. We are promoting the School Alumni tool on the homepage of students. Also students are some of the most engaged members on groups. Why? They want to get the inside-scoop on their careers and join the experts to get valuable mentorship. The Intel Student Lounge is a very popular group.Do’s & Don’ts with Alumni Tool- Do use this as an “education” point of how we are building products to help students find their career path- Don’t get off track and talk about how customers can use this do choose which school to target for good candidates – that will get you off track- Don’t offer to go live with alumni, you should be in and out of this slide. If you show alumni tool live, it will eat up your entire meeting
Then, he clicks his major, and again all the facets update – he sees the 662 students who studied what HE studied.
He types in “Project Management”But it’s not just charts and graphs. He can then drill down and explore the specific careers of individuals…In de volgende webcast zalmijncollega Wesley hierverder op door gaan hoe je kuntomgaan met de searches op skills.

When he has questions about how to accomplish something at work, group members help him out with advice - and even some introductions. The groups teach him things that Hans learns just by living his life:What people in this industry talk aboutWhat issues are top of mindHOW they talk, what acronyms they use, what conferences they attend – and who the influencers areIt’s like a mini, virtual apprenticeship where he can “join the experts.”
Most importantly, starting at college – he can build a powerful support network of people who know him, his work – and can support him at every milestone. The smart people he met in class, faculty, mentors, bosses at his internships. Maybe Even members of the country club.
And, of course, our goal is that in five years, Hans works for Lars– because Lars is more connected, more current and more engaged with his industry and the people and information in it.
