boration. A new framework within which we need to achieve
trustworthiness among operators based on emotional ties
among people as the vital nucleus of excellent service to the
client.
The spirit of the European School of Short Sea Shipping was
born in the year 2004. In its creation its vision, mission and
values were decided. And until today its values have served to
explain its correct performance and they now serve us to
approach its reality.
Imagination: a new approach to the teaching of
logistics
The School seeks its inspiration in the Mediterranean and spe-
cifically in the Socratic school developed 400 years Before
Christ, which incorporates the ethical training of the citizen.
From the same era are some of the men who left a permanent
legacy in history, such as the astronomer Meton, the musicians
Damon and Konnos, the mathematician Theodore of
Cyrenaica, the sculptor Phideas, the philosopher Anaxagoras,
the comedy playwright Aristophanes, the historian Herodotus,
and the tragedians Aeschylus, Sophocles and Eurypides,
among others. The period is characterised by knowledge and
the power of speech. Education was carried without program-
mes, without formalities, for the pleasure of enjoying knowled-
ge. One learned by direct experience.
Students now require more flexible and permanent systems:
part-time studies, recurrent training and combined program-
mes. Learning has become part of our work itself if we wish to
keep ourselves up to date.

Society, the economy and, as an inevitable consequence,
logistics are moving toward models in which the substance will
be conceptual factors. People will need to have a creative pro-
file and will need to be capable of synthesising and empathi-
sing. The fundamental factor in developing objectives such as
creating, synthesising and empathising is to have suitable peo-
ple. Or to put it another way, the important thing is the human
resources and the school, through its conception and develop-
ment, seeks to attain excellence in its training in those new
aspects.
Under this new paradigm value is generated by the capability

At the School we pose a series of questions:
-What is learning?
-What is the role of instruction?
-Can we improve learning?
-Is it necessary to design new strategies?
-How should learning be today?
It is essential that the student involves himself actively in trai-
ning to attain full mastery of the subject. In 1996 Edward
Bales2, Director of Education at the Motorola company, set out
the pyramid of knowledge retention, giving a very intuitive
approximation.
The traditional class obtains very poor results with respect to
practical training or the need to apply knowledge to real situa-
tions.
At the School we endeavour to respond to various require-
ments which arise, following the theories of Bloom and Bales,
and we seek to combine all of them. We have theoretical ses-
sions and master classes with professionals in the sector who
understand day to day operations. And we allow equal time for
questions and discussions. We supply documentation so that
those who wish to broaden their knowledge or know the infor-
mation sources are able to do this in an easy way. We appro-
ach the student so that he wants to know. He can "see and
touch" everything that goes on in operations.
A substantial percentage of the students have used the servi-
ces of SSS after attending the School. A fundamental element
has been placing the resources we have at the disposal of trai- conditioned to view the sector as a collection of elements and
