Finish the Dissertation encourages doctoral students to view the
dissertation-writing process as a series of steps rather than a
single, immense task. The organization proposes several potential
tasks that are unlikely to take longer than 45 minutes, but will help
students make progress on their dissertations. These simple tasks
including requesting examples of outstanding dissertations in
one’s field from a dissertation advisor. Students may choose to
take an additional step and read a single chapter of one of these
dissertations and writing a paragraph about its strengths. Doctoral
students might also dedicate 45 minutes to outlining a single
chapter of their dissertation, or to writing a signal section of their
preexisting outline.Additional steps students can take include
requesting phone conversations with prominent authors in their
field, making an appointment with their dissertation advisor, and
researching the relevant research of their dissertation committee
members.
