Shooting
Northeastern Law students recently uncovered the details of a
racially charged shooting that dates back to Jim Crow-era
America. The law school has spent more than seven years
revisiting the verdicts of more than 350 murder cases that seemed
racially motivated, hence unjust, an arduous task that involved
piecing together facts from various articles and records buried in
government archives. Students in the Northeastern University
School of Journalism have aided law students in their work.

Shooting
The most recent discovery of injustice involved Madison Harris, a
WorldWar II veteran, who was accused of drunk and disorderly
conduct by a streetcar conductor in April of 1946.The conductor
fired on Harris, killing him, despite witnesses reporting that Harris
complied with the conductor’s orders, raising two empty hands in
the air.The conductor was never charged with murder, only
disorderly conduct.Weeks later, Judge A.W. Callaway dismissed
the conductor of even that minor charge, letting him go free.
