This document announces a conference on HPV infection among women with or at risk for HIV. It notes that HPV infection is common among HIV+ women and can lead to cervical cancer. While HAART has reduced AIDS, its effect on HPV and cervical dysplasia is unknown. The conference aims to investigate the role of HPV in HIV+ women and discuss treatment and prevention strategies like the HPV vaccine. Topics will include the epidemiology of HPV/HIV co-infection, treating cervical disease, updates on the HPV vaccine trial, and implementing HPV vaccination. The event is intended for physicians, PAs, NPs, and nurses providing care to HIV+ or at-risk women.

1. Dear Colleague,
Women infected with HIV are at increased risk for the development of cervical cancer
precursors, which are associated with infection by human papillomavirus (HPV). As
many as 60% of HIV-infected women are co-infected with some type of HPV, while
24% may be infected by three or more types. Approximately 20% of co-infected women
develop HPV-induced pre-malignant lesions of the uterine cervix within three years of
an HIV diagnosis. Left untreated, HPV-associated lesions may lead to invasive cervical
cancer, an AIDS-defining illness.
While recent advances in highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART) have contributed
to a decline in AIDS incidence, the therapeutic effect of HAART on HPV clearance and
the incidence of cervical dysplasia is not entirely known. Other therapeutic options
include a novel preventative HPV vaccine that also might prove to be of some benefit
to both HIV-infected and at-risk women.
