Robert Hooke’s book Micrographia was a best-seller of its time. It contained accurate and detailed records of his observations and was illustrated with magnificent drawings, such as cork (where the term cell came from) and the flea. Other drawings included ‘A Louse’ and ‘The eyes of a fly’. His drawings helped scientists realise what the microscope could do for science.
