Top Ten Reasons to Cook for Your Dog

2. Salmonella!!!!
Over the past year there have been 14 recalls of commercial
dog food due to Salmonella contamination!
These recalls were performed by trusted brand companies such
as Proctor and Gamble, Natura Pet, Hartz, Bravo, Nutri-vet and
Jones Natural Chews.

3. Different dogs have different nutritional needs and
food tolerance issues. One dog may prefer chicken
while another has tummy troubles after eating it.
Mass produced, commercial dog food is formulated
with a “generic” mentality that does not take these
differences into consideration.
One Size Fits All
4. Commercial dog food has tried to start a trend by
offering “fresh” food in a refrigerated case. This is the
equivalent of a human trying to get complete nutrition
by exclusively eating meal replacement bars. While
they do offer some vitamins and nutrients, they are
not as nutritionally complete as a balanced meal.
“Fresh” Commercial Food is not
Nutritionally Complete
5. • Propylene glycol = antifreeze
• Ethoxyquin = pesticide
• Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) = Carcinogen
• Butylated hyroxytoluene (BHT) = Carcinogen
All of these ingredients are legally used as
preservatives in commercial dog food.
Shelf Life = Dangerous Preservatives
6. Only about 10% of the cost of commercial dog food
goes toward the actual ingredients used. So much for
“high quality” ingredients! The rest pays for the
company’s overhead costs.

7. The buzz words “all natural” can have unsavory
definitions. For example, a few years ago there was
an outcry when consumers suspected that “all
natural, meat by-products” meant meat used from
euthanized cats and dogs. It was all natural, alright!
“All Natural” Can Mean Anything!
8. When friends learn that I cook for my dog, they often
ask if it costs more than buying dog food in a bag. I
answer by saying, if I just served the food exclusively
to my dog, then the answer is yes. However, if my
dog and I are both eating the same food, then I am
just dishing up an extra plate for him. That is much
more economical than buying separate food for him!
It’s More Economical
9. When I cook my dog’s food, I control what goes into
his dinner. That means a healthy balance of lean
protein, good carbohydrates and fresh vegetables.
No fillers, no artificial colors and NO preservatives!
A Balanced, Healthy Diet
10. Cooking for your dog fits right into the current trend
of sustainability and self-reliance. Instead of using
fuel to drive to chain stores in order to purchase huge
non-recyclable packages of mystery kibble, your dog
can enjoy real food made in your own kitchen.
Sustainable and Eco-friendly
11. These are the
members of my family.
Cody is my husky mix
dog, for whom I have
been cooking real food
for the past two years.
He is sitting with my
mom, who loves him
as much as I do!
Dogs are Cherished Members of
our Families!
