3. Types of
Bicycle Racing
There are several types of bicycle racing. Road events constitute
one type. This type includes road races, hill climbs, criteriums,
stage races, and time trials. The basic road race is a mass-start
event with racers riding in groups on open roads that are closed to
traffic. Races are typically over 100 miles long and serve as one-day
events. A criterium is a short road race that takes place on city
streets and spans between one third of a mile and two miles per
lap.
4. Types of
Bicycle Racing
Bicycle racing also includes track events, such as Madison relays
and points races. A Madison is a tag-team relay that involves high
levels of endurance, bursts of speed, and dangerous maneuvering.
As for a points race, it constitutes a group of riders competing
against one another by completing a series of laps. The winner of a
points race is typically the racer with the most points at the end,
but that changes when a racer laps the rest of the field.
5. Types of
Bicycle Racing
Finally, there are off-road bicycle racing events. These include
cross-country races and observed trails events. While cross-country
races can be anywhere from five to 50 miles long,
observed trails events are comparatively very short. In a cross-country
race, competitors compete against other riders within
their ability and age range on a single or double-track trail. The
course does not include many obstacles, unlike those of observed
trails events, and the winner could be the rider who crosses the
finish line first or the one who makes the fastest time.
