SIGNIFICANCE
White Ribbon Alliance decided to observe
National Safe Motherhood Day every year
with an aim to raise awareness about
adequate access to care during pregnancy,
childbirth and postnatal period along with a
focus on reducing anemia.
India accounts for 15 per cent of total
maternal deaths worldwide. Even though over
80 per cent of women deliver in health
facilities, the death rate is high. “Every year
44,000 women die in India due to improper
care during the pregnancy”
9. SIGNIFICANCE CONTINUE…….
Safe motherhood means ensuring that all
women receive the care they need to be
safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and
childbirth.
According to WRAI, “It is the right of every
woman to take good quality nutrition, proper
healthcare services during and after
pregnancy and childbirth”. It also calls for
abolishing child marriages because it may
be an indirect cause of maternal deaths.
10. FACTS ABOUT MATERNAL MORTALITY
As per World Health Organization,
approximately 830 women die every day from
preventable causes related to pregnancy and
childbirth.
11. MATERNAL MORTALITY CONTINUE…..
50 to 98 per cent of maternal deaths are
caused by direct obstetric causes –
hemorrhage, infection, hypertensive
disorders, ruptured uterus, hepatitis, and
anemia, says the WHO.
Skilled care before, during and after
childbirth can save the lives of women and
newborn babies, as per WHO.
12. MATERNAL MORTALITY CONTINUE…..
Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of India for
the period 2016 to 2018, as per the latest
report of the national Sample Registration
System (SRS) data is 113 per 100,000 live
births. It has declined by 17 points, from 130
per 100,000 live births in 2014 to 2016.
Rural areas tend to have greater rate of
infant mortality.
