CONTROL MODULE -ECM-).
Function
Components of throttle valve control module (J338):
l Closed Throttle Position (CTP) Switch -F60-
l Throttle Position (TP) sensor -G69-
l Throttle Position (TP) Sensor -G88-
l Throttle Position (TP) Actuator -V60-
If the complete throttle valve control module is current-less (e.g. connector disconnected) the throttle valve
moves into a particular, specified mechanical position, which signals an increased idle speed with an engine at
operating temperature.
If only the Throttle Position (TP) Actuator -V60- is current-less, the throttle valve also moves into the specified
mechanical position (emergency running gap), however, since Closed Throttle Position (CTP) Switch -F60- can
still be recognized, an "almost normal" is reached via the respective ignition angle retardation.
If the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a malfunction at Throttle Position (TP) Sensor - G69-, Throttle
Position (TP) Actuator -V60- is switched current -less by the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the throttle
valve moves into the specified mechanical position (emergency running gap) again.

Test requirements
l The respective fuses of Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- must be OK.
NOTE: Use only gold-plated terminals when servicing terminals in harness connector
of throttle valve control module.
NOTE: Terminal assignment at throttle control unit is different in vehicles with and
without cruise control. Characteristic: Steering column switch with operating
unit for cruise control.

l Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
l All electrical consumers like, for example, lights and rear window heating must be switched off.
l Parking brake must be engaged or else daylight driving lights will be switched on.
l If vehicle is equipped with an A/C system, it must be switched off.
l Ground (GND) connections between engine and chassis must be OK.
l Throttle valve must not be damaged or dirty.
l Throttle valve must be in Closed Throttle Position (CTP).
NOTE: Fuse holder is behind access panel at far left end of dash.

l Adjustment of accelerator pedal cable must be OK.
l Coolant temperature must be at least 80 °C. See DIAGNOSTIC MODE 1: CHECK MEASURED
VALUES ; PID 5, Coolant temperature.
Test sequence
¡ Disconnect the 8 -pin connector at the throttle valve control module.
Check resistance
¡ Measure resistance of Throttle Position (TP) Actuator -V60- between the following terminals.
Vehicles with cruise control: Terminal 7 +8
Specified value: 3...200 ohms
Vehicles without cruise control: Terminal 1 +2
Specified value: 3...200 ohms

If specified value is not obtained:
¡ Replace Throttle Valve Control Module -J338-, see item 13.
¡ Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM). See DIAGNOSTIC MODE 4: RESET/ERASE

¡ Generate readiness code, see READINESS CODE, GENERATING .
If specified value is obtained:
¡ Check voltage supply of throttle valve control module and wiring to control module, see CHECKING

If voltage supply and wires are OK:
¡ Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-, see REPLACING ENGINE CONTROL

¡ Connect multimeter to the following connector terminals for voltage measurement.
Vehicles with cruise control: Terminal 2 + 5
¡ Switch ignition on. Specified value: at least 4.5 V
¡ Switch ignition off.

Function
The throttle valve activation occurs via an electric motor (throttle drive) in the throttle valve control module. It
is activated by the Engine Control Module (ECM) according to specifications of the two sensors, Throttle
Position (TP) Sensor -G79- and Sensor 2 for accelerator pedal position - G185-. See 20 FUEL SUPPLY ,
function of the E -gas system.

¡ Connect diagnostic tester. See CONNECT DIAGNOSTIC TESTER .
¡ Switch ignition on.
¡ Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 1: Checking measured values."
¡ Select the measuring value "PID 17: Throttle valve position (absolute)."
¡ Check specified value of throttle valve position (absolute) at idle stop.
PID 17: THROTTLE VALVE POSITION (ABSOLUTE): AT IDLE STOP
¡ Slowly depress accelerator pedal up to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) stop while observing the percentage
display. The percentage display must increase uniformly.
¡ Check specified value of throttle valve position (absolute) at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) stop.
PID 17: THROTTLE VALVE POSITION (ABSOLUTE): AT WOT STOP
¡ End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
If specified values are not obtained:
Check resistance

¡ Measure resistance of Throttle drive (power accelerator actuation) -G186- between test box sockets
117+118.
Specified value: 1,0...5,0 ohms

NOTE: The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor -G42- is a component of the Mass Air
Flow (MAF) sensor -G70- and cannot be replaced individually.

temperature should decrease.
