Research Paper: Museum Visit
This paper focuses on my visit to a museum and the art work
presented there. I have visited the museum last week
particularly for this assignment. The museum name is Dallas
Museum of Art.
Part # 1
For this part I have selected an art work named “standing
female figure.” Standing Female Figure is belongs to the
Mexico: state of Tamaulipas of Huastec culture. This art piece
is a part of Early Post-classic period, c. A.D. 900 - 1250
Sandstone Gift of Norbert Schimmel in memory of Evelin
Schimmel, 1989.82. It is presented in Dallas Museum of Art.
This sculpture is made up of clay. It is of brown color, and
visually it is a lady who is standing straight. Its condition is
good, but I saw few cracks on it which shows it’s a part of a
very old heritage.
Although there is no long description of the art piece on the
wall of museum, but the as I research about “standing female
figure,” I found that the artist intended to describe the rights of
a woman of that time. At the time, in Mexico there are near to
no rights given to the woman and the artist observed that issue
and created a sculpture with clay with a hope to present a true
image and role of a woman in the society. This sculpture
“standing female figure” gives a message of equal rights and a
very important role of females in building up the community.
In early post-classic period, c. A.D. 900 – 1250, the Mexican
people failed to provide equal rights to both the genders and
discriminate among male and female. The very important point
and message is hidden in this sculpture “standing female figure”
that woman have a very important role to create a successful
society. There are many emotions connected with this art piece
because after thousands of years later this social issue still
exists in our world, there are so many places where we swab the
rights of women and trying to compress their roles in the
society. This art piece “standing female figure” is able to take
you in that time.
Here is my picture with the “Standing Female Figure.” It was a
great experience of visiting the museum and witnesses so many
artworks under one roof. This gave me an opportunity to
analysis and learned more about art and the history and
messages attached to them. Standing Female Figure seems so
old and unique in a way and also describing its message of the
female role in a society of its time very simply. It’s a beautiful
clay statue, standing and welcoming people who came to visit
her and simply explaining the artist’s message.
Part # 2
Recently, I got a chance to visit the "Dallas Museum of Art" for
the first time. That evening allowed me to study and examine
art on a significant level by building skills and relationships
with artworks by the decades. I was assigned the responsibility
to choose three artworks and to record a social analysis
highlighting the components and beliefs of art before studied in
my class. In this part I have selected three art pieces from the
collection of the museum. All the pieces of art are fascinated
me but few of them were very interesting and on the basis of
those three, I will present my report on the art in the society.
The three art pieces which I have selected include a sculpture of
“Shiva Nataraja,” second is a sculpture of “Durga,” and at the
last “Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette.”
The sculpture of Shiva Nataraja was created in 11 century. It
belongs to the country “India”, Tamil Nadu. It is a part of the
heritage of Chola dynasty. It is made of a bronze material.
Second is a sculpture of Durga, it belongs to the country India,
Rajasthan. A sculpture of Durga was created in the 11 century
and the material which is used to make it is “Red Sandstone.”
Third art piece which I have selected is Seasickness at the Ball,
on Board an English Corvette. This art piece belongs to the
country France and the time period of its invention is around
1798 to 1882, probably 1880s was a time when this art piece
was created. The size of a painting is 87.8 x 131.4 cm and the
materials of this art piece are oil and canvas, it is an oil
painting.
In current years, the Dallas Museum of Art has grown its art
pieces which belong to South Asian from a little piece of Indian
pagoda statues to approximately 500 products, including
Buddhist and Hindu statues from India, Himalayan Buddhist
statue of bronze and custom things, art pieces from Southeast
Asia, and ornamental arts from Mughal time of India. The
sculpture of Shiva Nataraja and sculpture of Durga is a part of
this collection, which presents the artwork from the starting
period to 14th century. Artworks in the group's own creations
from the late Ottoman imperialism to Java and structural arts
propose the beauty of structures in the tradition of India. This
art piece shows the artistic and cultural importance of more than
140 highlighted pictures, which vary from Indian miniature
sketches and Tibetan thangkas to stone and bronze
statues("Durga," in_ Dallas Museum of Art: A Guide to the
Collection, 2012). Describing certain art pieces to one another
by cross-references and interconnecting stories, curators and
scholars give a deep cultural history of the country. These all
art pieces give me an idea of the importance and value of art
from the starting period to 14th century.
The sculpture of Durga is presenting the intercultural values and
values and traditions of a particular region of the world. The
sculpture of Durga belongs to India and it also touches and
connects the Hindu and Baddish culture and tradition. My
personal interpretation is based on the story which I have heard
after my visit to that museum. The sculpture of Durga fascinates
me the most and I personally found a message of this creation.
The story of Durga which also presents its message, Durga is
the goddess who is a military-style of the Royal Goddess. Durga
is apparently described here in her figure as Kali, an angry
appearance of the goddess Bhadrakali, whose title indicates the
time and is consequently connected with change, destruction,
and death. In the great remembered tale regarding Durga, she
kills a devil that was looked like a buffalo, and in a dancing
dedicating her success she runs out of limitation, moving the
world. Her partner, God Shiva, extends down below her soles to
embody the consequence of her celebration. Against thought she
is grinding her partner, Goddess Durga arrives at her thoughts
and returns to rest and calm (Frederick M.,2013). This statue
also presenting a message of a power which is totally belongs to
the women of this world. How a woman can help her husband,
how she can be a part of a great success, and how can she
celebrate and free to celebrate in her own way. This art piece is
totally gives a message of social responsibility toward right
things.
“Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette” is an
art piece which makes me able to belong to history. A
courageous artist, François-Auguste Biard obtained numerous
hallucinations throughout the first component of the 19th
century. He connects the audience of his painting with the
history of French travellers. He was apparently the greatest
European artist to visit to the Arctic Circle and paint icecaps.
He was further, as observed in this picture, a classic author of
modern history. “Seasickness at the Ball on Board an English
Corvette” was portrayed by Francois-Auguste Biard, who is a
French painter. This painting, created in the year between the
1860s, was drawn utilizing a smooth brush method and had a
recurrence of shades white and red. Biard utilized one tip scene
at an edge to accomplish the image of the bottom in the picture.
The lady at the middle reading a book is a focal point of a
picture. No one else in the picture has as enough importance as
her. Accurately and carefully drafted, this jammed picture is an
important illustration of passing the English Channel in the
center of the 19th century. The pitching ship throws an invented
shipboard globe. Toward the portside, a harpist has befallen
among the limbs of her fellow guitarist while a junior traveler,
composed, proceeds to demand for money. The entire crowd in
this artwork includes various means passengers react to a
circumstance. Few survive a rough period of seasickness, fall on
everyone, cry, and scream, while few vapor, rest, or study,
following their normal habits("A Biard Painting Donated to the
Dallas Museum of Art - The Art Tribune", 2019). Listening to
attire, diverse classes, and the moment information of
characteristics forms a valuable and funny history of French
community in the middle of 19th century. This art piece shows
an illusion from 15th century to the present date.
The comparison between all of these artworks that are a
sculpture of “Shiva Nataraja,” a sculpture of “Durga,” and
“Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette,” is very
obvious. If we compare “Shiva Nataraja” and “Durga,” then
there is not much difference between the culture and people
belongs both of the sculptures. Both belong to the Indian
culture, and both are the God and Goddess of the Hindu people.
There is a relation between both of the sculptures, and that is
that “Durga” and “Shiva Nataraja” were husband and wife
according to the Hindu people and cultural history. The culture
of India is totally different from the remaining world; there are
a vast vulture and history of God and Goddess in India. And
both of the sculptures presenting the faith, believe, and history
of Hindu people and India. If we talk about the painting
“Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette,” then
we can find many differences from the other two sculptures.
This painting was created in the 1860s in the region of France.
If we compare both the sculptures “Shiva Nataraja” and
“Durga” with a painting “Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an
English Corvette,” then we found much difference among their
people, history, and culture that is belonged with all these
artworks. Both the sculptures “Shiva Nataraja” and “Durga have
belonged to India and Hindu people and “Seasickness at the
Ball, on Board an English Corvette” belongs to French people.
The dresses wore by the people in the painting, showing their
French culture. If we compare the history and the time of
creation, then both types of artworks are from different eras.
The painting is presenting a scene of panic, of rough weather,
and a ship in a sea, whereas both the sculptures “Shiva
Nataraja” and “Durga presenting faith and believe, and hope
that has belonged with the God and Goddess.

COMPARING ONE PIECE YOU HAVE SELECTED FROM A
PARTICULAR PERIOD TO ANOTHER PIECE YOU HAVE
SELECTED FROM THE 15TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT.
Look for these VISUAL ELEMENTS: visual tools an artist has
to make a work of art
1. Line: Lines can show outline, imply a third dimension, show
direction or movement
2. Shape and Mass: Shape refers to 2 dimensions, for instance,
a square. Mass refers to 3 dimensions, for instance, a cube.
3. Light: Light reveals form. Where is the light source? What
is the range of values, from light to dark, in the art you are
reviewing?
4. Color: How does the artist use color in the art object you
are reviewing? Is it the primary colors only? Is it emotionally
soothing or jarring?
5. Texture and pattern: Does the art object you are viewing
have actual texture, could you feel it? Or does it have implied
texture, suggesting that it is smooth or rough? Does it have an
overall pattern on the surface?
6. Space: If your object is architectural or sculptural, it will
have 3-dimensional space. Try to describe the space. If your
object is two dimensional, how does the artist imply space, for
example, through linear perspective, overlapping of objects,
smaller or larger objects, or atmospheric perspective?
7. Time and motion: Does the art object imply time, for
instance, a sunset, or motion, for instance, a sculpture that
moves?
Look for these PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN: the organization of
the composition or design of the art work
1. Unity and Variety: Unity is a sense of oneness in the art.
Variety maintains interest in art
2. Balance: Symmetrical balance occurs when both sides of the
art object are similar in size or shape. Asymmetrical balance
occurs when the two sides are quite different in the appearance
of the objects in the art.
3. Emphasis and Subordination: How does the artist draw your
eye to the center of attention of the art object? How does the
artist make the rest of the painting subordinate to the center of
interest?
4. Scale and Proportion: Scale means size in relation to a
standard or "normal" size. Proportion refers to size
relationships between parts of a whole, or between two or more
items perceived as a unit. Sometimes these are deliberately
incorrect, as in Hierarchal Scale in the art of antiquity.
5. Rhythm or repetition: The repeated use of a color, shape or
line to create expression

Dhakal 1Dhakal 7Rupesh DhakalProfessor Richard MillerAR.docx

  • 1. Dhakal 1 Dhakal 7 Rupesh Dhakal Professor Richard Miller ARTS-1301-77204 7 October 2019 Research Paper: Museum Visit This paper focuses on my visit to a museum and the art work presented there. I have visited the museum last week particularly for this assignment. The museum name is Dallas Museum of Art. Part # 1 For this part I have selected an art work named “standing female figure.” Standing Female Figure is belongs to the Mexico: state of Tamaulipas of Huastec culture. This art piece is a part of Early Post-classic period, c. A.D. 900 - 1250 Sandstone Gift of Norbert Schimmel in memory of Evelin Schimmel, 1989.82. It is presented in Dallas Museum of Art. This sculpture is made up of clay. It is of brown color, and visually it is a lady who is standing straight. Its condition is good, but I saw few cracks on it which shows it’s a part of a very old heritage. Although there is no long description of the art piece on the wall of museum, but the as I research about “standing female figure,” I found that the artist intended to describe the rights of a woman of that time. At the time, in Mexico there are near to no rights given to the woman and the artist observed that issue and created a sculpture with clay with a hope to present a true image and role of a woman in the society. This sculpture “standing female figure” gives a message of equal rights and a very important role of females in building up the community.
  • 2. In early post-classic period, c. A.D. 900 – 1250, the Mexican people failed to provide equal rights to both the genders and discriminate among male and female. The very important point and message is hidden in this sculpture “standing female figure” that woman have a very important role to create a successful society. There are many emotions connected with this art piece because after thousands of years later this social issue still exists in our world, there are so many places where we swab the rights of women and trying to compress their roles in the society. This art piece “standing female figure” is able to take you in that time. Here is my picture with the “Standing Female Figure.” It was a great experience of visiting the museum and witnesses so many artworks under one roof. This gave me an opportunity to analysis and learned more about art and the history and messages attached to them. Standing Female Figure seems so old and unique in a way and also describing its message of the female role in a society of its time very simply. It’s a beautiful clay statue, standing and welcoming people who came to visit her and simply explaining the artist’s message. Part # 2 Recently, I got a chance to visit the "Dallas Museum of Art" for the first time. That evening allowed me to study and examine art on a significant level by building skills and relationships with artworks by the decades. I was assigned the responsibility to choose three artworks and to record a social analysis highlighting the components and beliefs of art before studied in my class. In this part I have selected three art pieces from the collection of the museum. All the pieces of art are fascinated me but few of them were very interesting and on the basis of those three, I will present my report on the art in the society. The three art pieces which I have selected include a sculpture of “Shiva Nataraja,” second is a sculpture of “Durga,” and at the last “Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette.” The sculpture of Shiva Nataraja was created in 11 century. It
  • 3. belongs to the country “India”, Tamil Nadu. It is a part of the heritage of Chola dynasty. It is made of a bronze material. Second is a sculpture of Durga, it belongs to the country India, Rajasthan. A sculpture of Durga was created in the 11 century and the material which is used to make it is “Red Sandstone.” Third art piece which I have selected is Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette. This art piece belongs to the country France and the time period of its invention is around 1798 to 1882, probably 1880s was a time when this art piece was created. The size of a painting is 87.8 x 131.4 cm and the materials of this art piece are oil and canvas, it is an oil painting. In current years, the Dallas Museum of Art has grown its art pieces which belong to South Asian from a little piece of Indian pagoda statues to approximately 500 products, including Buddhist and Hindu statues from India, Himalayan Buddhist statue of bronze and custom things, art pieces from Southeast Asia, and ornamental arts from Mughal time of India. The sculpture of Shiva Nataraja and sculpture of Durga is a part of this collection, which presents the artwork from the starting period to 14th century. Artworks in the group's own creations from the late Ottoman imperialism to Java and structural arts propose the beauty of structures in the tradition of India. This art piece shows the artistic and cultural importance of more than 140 highlighted pictures, which vary from Indian miniature sketches and Tibetan thangkas to stone and bronze statues("Durga," in_ Dallas Museum of Art: A Guide to the Collection, 2012). Describing certain art pieces to one another by cross-references and interconnecting stories, curators and scholars give a deep cultural history of the country. These all art pieces give me an idea of the importance and value of art from the starting period to 14th century. The sculpture of Durga is presenting the intercultural values and values and traditions of a particular region of the world. The sculpture of Durga belongs to India and it also touches and
  • 4. connects the Hindu and Baddish culture and tradition. My personal interpretation is based on the story which I have heard after my visit to that museum. The sculpture of Durga fascinates me the most and I personally found a message of this creation. The story of Durga which also presents its message, Durga is the goddess who is a military-style of the Royal Goddess. Durga is apparently described here in her figure as Kali, an angry appearance of the goddess Bhadrakali, whose title indicates the time and is consequently connected with change, destruction, and death. In the great remembered tale regarding Durga, she kills a devil that was looked like a buffalo, and in a dancing dedicating her success she runs out of limitation, moving the world. Her partner, God Shiva, extends down below her soles to embody the consequence of her celebration. Against thought she is grinding her partner, Goddess Durga arrives at her thoughts and returns to rest and calm (Frederick M.,2013). This statue also presenting a message of a power which is totally belongs to the women of this world. How a woman can help her husband, how she can be a part of a great success, and how can she celebrate and free to celebrate in her own way. This art piece is totally gives a message of social responsibility toward right things. “Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette” is an art piece which makes me able to belong to history. A courageous artist, François-Auguste Biard obtained numerous hallucinations throughout the first component of the 19th century. He connects the audience of his painting with the history of French travellers. He was apparently the greatest European artist to visit to the Arctic Circle and paint icecaps. He was further, as observed in this picture, a classic author of modern history. “Seasickness at the Ball on Board an English Corvette” was portrayed by Francois-Auguste Biard, who is a French painter. This painting, created in the year between the 1860s, was drawn utilizing a smooth brush method and had a recurrence of shades white and red. Biard utilized one tip scene
  • 5. at an edge to accomplish the image of the bottom in the picture. The lady at the middle reading a book is a focal point of a picture. No one else in the picture has as enough importance as her. Accurately and carefully drafted, this jammed picture is an important illustration of passing the English Channel in the center of the 19th century. The pitching ship throws an invented shipboard globe. Toward the portside, a harpist has befallen among the limbs of her fellow guitarist while a junior traveler, composed, proceeds to demand for money. The entire crowd in this artwork includes various means passengers react to a circumstance. Few survive a rough period of seasickness, fall on everyone, cry, and scream, while few vapor, rest, or study, following their normal habits("A Biard Painting Donated to the Dallas Museum of Art - The Art Tribune", 2019). Listening to attire, diverse classes, and the moment information of characteristics forms a valuable and funny history of French community in the middle of 19th century. This art piece shows an illusion from 15th century to the present date. The comparison between all of these artworks that are a sculpture of “Shiva Nataraja,” a sculpture of “Durga,” and “Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette,” is very obvious. If we compare “Shiva Nataraja” and “Durga,” then there is not much difference between the culture and people belongs both of the sculptures. Both belong to the Indian culture, and both are the God and Goddess of the Hindu people. There is a relation between both of the sculptures, and that is that “Durga” and “Shiva Nataraja” were husband and wife according to the Hindu people and cultural history. The culture of India is totally different from the remaining world; there are a vast vulture and history of God and Goddess in India. And both of the sculptures presenting the faith, believe, and history of Hindu people and India. If we talk about the painting “Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette,” then
  • 6. we can find many differences from the other two sculptures. This painting was created in the 1860s in the region of France. If we compare both the sculptures “Shiva Nataraja” and “Durga” with a painting “Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette,” then we found much difference among their people, history, and culture that is belonged with all these artworks. Both the sculptures “Shiva Nataraja” and “Durga have belonged to India and Hindu people and “Seasickness at the Ball, on Board an English Corvette” belongs to French people. The dresses wore by the people in the painting, showing their French culture. If we compare the history and the time of creation, then both types of artworks are from different eras. The painting is presenting a scene of panic, of rough weather, and a ship in a sea, whereas both the sculptures “Shiva Nataraja” and “Durga presenting faith and believe, and hope that has belonged with the God and Goddess. NAME OF PIECE from the 15th century to the present DESCRIPTION OF PIECE DATE OF PIECE MAJOR ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENTS
  • 12. 4. ANALYZE THE RELATIONSHIP OF ART TO HISTORY BY PLACING WORKS OF ART WITHIN CULTURAL, HISTORICAL, AND CHRONOLOGICAL CONTEXTS BY COMPARING ONE PIECE YOU HAVE SELECTED FROM A PARTICULAR PERIOD TO ANOTHER PIECE YOU HAVE SELECTED FROM THE 15TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT. Look for these VISUAL ELEMENTS: visual tools an artist has to make a work of art 1. Line: Lines can show outline, imply a third dimension, show direction or movement 2. Shape and Mass: Shape refers to 2 dimensions, for instance, a square. Mass refers to 3 dimensions, for instance, a cube. 3. Light: Light reveals form. Where is the light source? What is the range of values, from light to dark, in the art you are reviewing? 4. Color: How does the artist use color in the art object you are reviewing? Is it the primary colors only? Is it emotionally soothing or jarring? 5. Texture and pattern: Does the art object you are viewing have actual texture, could you feel it? Or does it have implied texture, suggesting that it is smooth or rough? Does it have an overall pattern on the surface? 6. Space: If your object is architectural or sculptural, it will have 3-dimensional space. Try to describe the space. If your object is two dimensional, how does the artist imply space, for example, through linear perspective, overlapping of objects, smaller or larger objects, or atmospheric perspective? 7. Time and motion: Does the art object imply time, for instance, a sunset, or motion, for instance, a sculpture that moves? Look for these PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN: the organization of the composition or design of the art work
  • 13. 1. Unity and Variety: Unity is a sense of oneness in the art. Variety maintains interest in art 2. Balance: Symmetrical balance occurs when both sides of the art object are similar in size or shape. Asymmetrical balance occurs when the two sides are quite different in the appearance of the objects in the art. 3. Emphasis and Subordination: How does the artist draw your eye to the center of attention of the art object? How does the artist make the rest of the painting subordinate to the center of interest? 4. Scale and Proportion: Scale means size in relation to a standard or "normal" size. Proportion refers to size relationships between parts of a whole, or between two or more items perceived as a unit. Sometimes these are deliberately incorrect, as in Hierarchal Scale in the art of antiquity. 5. Rhythm or repetition: The repeated use of a color, shape or line to create expression
