RAJSHREE PATHY,
Chairperson & Managing Director, Rajshree
Sugars and Chemicals;
Founder, India Design Forum
“I don't let the child in me die.”
Rajshree Pathy is more than a celebrated businesswoman
from Coimbatore.
A sugar baron; the first woman President of Indian Sugar
Mills Association; recipient of the Global Leaders of
Tomorrow from the World Economic Forum, Switzerland; former Chairperson of CII National Committee
on textiles; an avid pursuer of food and agro business; energy; real estate, travel; health; hospitality and
arts... Rajshree Pathy dons multiple hats with ease.
EARLY LIFE:
Rajshree Pathy is the daughter of famous industrialist G. Varadaraj, of PSG Group. Her father was also a
former Rajya Sabha MP. She is married to S. Pathy, chairman and managing director of Lakshmi Mills.
She is as chirpy as a 16-year-old even in the midst of a demanding timetable. But, as a child, Rajshree was
quiet, nervous and cocooned; awestruck by the happenings at home. Father G. Vardaraj — industrialist,
Parliamentarian, educationist and philanthropist — met stalwarts from various fields and young Rajshree
was present at these meetings. It made her strong from within and curious about everything. She is also
curious of reading a lot and her friends named her „encyclopaedia'.
She is a commerce graduate and an alumnus of the Owner President Management Programme of the
Harvard University, USA.
CAREER PROFILE:
Based out of Coimbatore, Pathy has managed to carve a unique identity for self, not as someone's wife or
daughter, but as an independent woman.
Rajshree didn't want to go into the family business but wanted to do a degree in architecture from the U.S.
but her parents didn't want to send her so far. When 17, she married industrialist S. Pathy. As time went
by, Rajshree worked in her father's retail business (selling cars, jeeps and vans, as she defines it) and then
moved to textiles. Interestingly, when she got the license for the sugar business, her father wasn't
interested, as he wanted to establish a medical college for philanthropic reasons. But she went ahead
coping with both a growing family and the sugar factory.
Under her leadership, the Rajshree group of companies has grown to include Travel, Natural Health Care,
biotechnology and education in the field of visual art and design.
Pathy is best known for her sponsorship and lobbying for the ethanol blending programme and under her
presidentship, ISMA signed a tripartite agreement binding oil companies and sugar factories all over the
country.
The India Design Forum (IDF) was founded by well known business woman, art collector and design
aficionado Rajshree Pathy and her daughter Aishwarya Pathy in 2012. It is one of the most prominent and
influential design platforms in India. The IDF is an interdisciplinary platform on design which promotes a
dialog on the core issues impacting our society and how they can be tackled with good design examples
and solutions.
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES:
She was the first woman President of Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) (2004-2005). She was the
President of the South Indian Sugar Mills Association (SISMA), (1995-1997) & (2007-2009), the premier
association of sugar factories in South India. She has contributed to the sugar industry's growth and
government policies by being part of the Confederation of Indian Industry. As the Vice Chairperson of the
National Committee on Sugar, she has pushed for wide sweeping reforms in the heavily controlled
industry. Her dynamic role in industry has been recognized in her selection as one of the hundred “Global
Leaders for Tomorrow” for 1996 by the World Economic Forum, Geneva. She was awarded the
Eisenhower fellowship in 2000. She was also awarded Padma Shri in 2013 by Government of India.
