Dignity and Respect
Dignity and Respect. Dignity and respect is something everyone has a right to. I have chosen this
subject because it is an important part of nursing in that to be able to fulfil the role of a nurse is
firstly to respect the person you are caring for. Dignity is a feeling of being valued, respected, having
self–worth, supported and being able to show empathy and compassion for the people nurses look
after. So for me it's important to outline the principles in dignity and respect when looking after
people who are vulnerable. Firstly we will look at ethics in nursing regarding dignity and respect,
treating a person as an individual when in hospital can be an important part of any patients healing
process, and to make sure these patients...show more content...
Evidence based practice is based on evidence used to support practice and nurses must justify their
rationale, it is now formed as an integral part of management, education, strategy and policy.
Ongoing development and changes in healthcare delivery enable nurses to maintain standards of
nursing and develop their competence and performance. Through this the patients well–being is
maintained, respecting them through accessing up to date knowledge and skills that are essential in
an ever changing environment. Multi–disciplinary working:– This means people from different
disciplines all working together with the same goal or interest, it involves doctors, nurses, physios,
occupational therapists, social workers and many other agencies working in the best interest of the
patient. This ensures that continuing care is a smooth process from hospital admission and beyond.
Respecting work colleagues and working as a team, listening to their contributions and sharing your
knowledge will have an important impact on the patients care, maintain their dignity and respecting
this will give the best outcome for them. This aspect of the NMC code sets good standards and
guidelines for understanding the principles when providing nursing care, nurses have a
responsibility to deliver safe and effective care for the best interest of the patient, which is

Death With Dignity Essay
You've sat in your hospital bed for at least three months now, and the pain and boredom is starting to
become even more torturous than you could have imagined. The pain that you are experiencing on a
day–to–day basis is excruciating; a normal, everyday procedure like using the restroom or getting
something to eat is a long, drawn out, and painful ordeal. All of the doctors that you've talked to
agree that you are going to die soon from the disease that has infested your body, but even six
months sounds like an excruciatingly long amount of time, especially when all you have to occupy
your time is lie in a bed painfully, waiting it out. Your family and friends are already distraught by
the news; they already know that you are on the brink...show more content...
Doctor Faye Girsh backs up this statement by showing that many patients want to end their lives
and the suffering that comes with it. She says, "At the Hemlock Society we get calls daily from
desperate people who are looking for someone like Jack Kevorkian to end their lives which have lost
all quality... Americans should enjoy a right guaranteed in the European Declaration of Human
Rights –– the right not to be forced to suffer. It should be considered as much of a crime to make
someone live who with justification does not wish to continue as it is to take life without
consent."(1) This shows that euthanasia supports the common good, which is one of the values our
Democracy was founded on. Euthanasia has also become legal in Oregon and Washington in the
United States now. This means that votes have actually shown that people want euthanasia to be
legal. Because one of the Democratic ideals is popular sovereignty, the United States must carry
out the will of the people. All of these examples show that euthanasia should be allowed in the
United States, but how do we get that goal to become a reality? The best way to get people
informed and involved is to create plenty of ads and announcements regarding euthanasia in order to

Value Of Dignity Essay
Dignity – "respecting the inherent value and worth of each person." Justice – " advocating and
acting in ways that promote respect for all persons." I remember an incident when I worked in the
surgery department where the situation could have turned into a sentinel event and most likely a
legal matter. As I was checking in and assessing a patient prior to his surgery, I found the patient to
be confused and was unable to confirm the procedure he was having done. He knew his name, the
year, but not the month and he was able to verbalized that he was in a hospital. Unable to confirm
the consent he signed and state the procedure he was having, I refused to proceed with the scheduled
procedure. At the time, I was unable to reach family members as well. I communicated this to the
rest of the O.R. team, my manager and the anesthesiologist. They agreed with my decision to cancel

I was firm with my reasons and provided reasonable rationale for my actions. The surgeon,
however, insisted on doing the procedure and argued that the patient had signed his own
consents. I was steadfast in my decision with the support of my peers and managers. The case
was eventually cancelled as we were not able to reach the family member who had power of
attorney. This family member happened to be a lawyer by profession and he expressed his
appreciation for my advocating for his father and my efforts in trying to reach him. Although this
son knew that his father was scheduled for surgery, he was not aware that the surgeon decided on
the time and day without fully informing him. I believe in this case, I carried myself with dignity
and appropriately advocated for the patient in the interest of safety. I adhered to my organization's
values of dignity and justice. With the patient being confused, I became his voice and refused to
proceed with an invasive procedure that he likely did not even fully

Meaning Of Dignity
Dignity Here I am trying to put into words what I precieve to be the meaning of dignity. It's a bit
complex because I don't want to say it is the same as respect because it is not. Dignity is
something I believe we are all born with, while respect comes later on in life. People I know tend to
confuse these two but I don't understand why. Dignity from what I have been taught in school and
through my life experience has to do mainly with value. It's natural for people to want to feel valued,
which in the long run is transformed to respect. I am not sure if I am making myself clear.
HUMAN BIRTH
DIGNITY =VALUE=RESPECT I am not shy when it comes to my self respect, it overflows. Even
though not long ago I was not

Dying With Dignity
On Tuesday, March 24, an elderly Oregon woman, acting with the aid of a doctor, dosed herself
with potent chemicals and died. The woman had lived with breast cancer for more than 20 years.
By all accounts her final hours were private and peaceful, as she became one of the first people in
American history to end her life lawfully with the aid of a physician (Oregonian A1).
She was able to end her life peacefully due to controversial legislation passed in her state. The Death
with Dignity Act was passed by the state of Oregon in 1994. It allows physicians to prescribe a
lethal dose of medication so that a terminally ill patient can end his or her life. The requirements set

Jones. In his dissent, he stated, "It does not violate the Controlled Substances Act's nonpreemption
provision. It neither exceeds the Attorney General's statutory authority under the Controlled
Substances Act" (The Federal Register 12). Therefore, this action would be detrimental to all those
who do not choose to wait for death. In November of 2004 Ashcroft appealed to the Supreme Court
and they will hear the case later this year. It is likely the Supreme Court will interpret the regulations
in accordance with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals but if it fails to do so Oregon will be forced to
repeal the statute.
This law has brought peace to 171 terminally ill and suffering individuals in a very painless and
humane manner. Only 3 of the 43 patients experienced complications in 2003. The only
complications reported in these 3 cases were vomiting. One–half of all patients became unconscious
within four minutes of ingesting the lethal medication and all died within 20 minutes. The range of
time from ingestion to death was five minutes to 48 hours (Sixth Annual Report T3.9).
Physician assisted suicide accomplishes much more than ending suffering before death. The right is
of the individual and should be respected by our government. It is a fundamental freedom that we
all should have. It allows a person to die with dignity and prevents the illness from killing them
before they die. "The Death with Dignity Act is very similar to other forms of euthanasia

The infant would die of auto–intoxication if surgery was not performed immediately. He stated in a
news conference that he was going to "merely stand by passively and let nature complete its
bungled job." (Dowbiggin) He also informed the press that "the Bollinger baby dies after six days
or the nation is saddled with the cost of taking care of it and its offspring, none of whom would
enjoy life anyway." (Dowbiggin) This was not his first or last infant he made that decision for. It
was never determined how many died before this baby but he let at least 5 more die after this
incident. This started, what in my mind, is a twisted characterization of the act of euthanasia.
Madison Grant, an American lawyer, eugenicist and conservationist, made the comment "the
elimination of defective infants was the welcome first step in the obliteration of the unfit."
(Dowbiggin)
Haiselden also exploited the media attention with a movie he actually starred in. "The Black Stork"
was a "eugenic dramatization" of the Bollinger case. (Dowbiggin) The movie opened in 1916 and
continued showing across America until 1928.
The most surprising supporter, in my eyes, was Helen Keller who stated that "the definition of life,
and that a right to life ought to be honored only when a potential for happiness, intelligence, and
social usefulness existed. Tolerating "anomalies" such as the Bollinger baby tends to lessen the
sacredness in which

Dignity Conserving Essay
Dignity is a universal human right that is fundamental to the well–being and quality of life of every
individual in all societies8. Dignity–conserving care is essential to providing effective palliative care
because the clients at the dying phase are particularly vulnerable to loss of many aspects of dignity,
including respect, autonomy, rights and privacy, due to their physical, psychological and spiritual
sufferings in the dying process5. Acknowledging the importance of dignity is crucial in palliative
nursing care as it shapes the delivery of care by influencing nurses' attitudes and behaviour toward
caring with dignity for the clients with any life–threatening condition and their families5. Dignity
can manifest in palliative care nursing through nurses' attitudes and behaviour toward caring that
demonstrate their understandings of the intrinsic and extrinsic...show more content...
A literature review for peer–reviewed journal articles was performed to identify the factors that may
affect dignity and effects of dignity–conserving care on the clients and their families in the provision
of palliative nursing care. From the 10 articles selected to be reviewed, 9 common themes (see Table
1) were identified as the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may influence the maintenance of dignity
for clients and their families in the provision of palliative care. All 10 articles commonly identified
one intrinsic factor, autonomy and independence, and one extrinsic factor, respect for clients. The
intrinsic factors, empowerment and self–worth, were identified in the 9 articles (1, 6–13). The other
intrinsic factors, individuals' spiritual belief, religion and culture were identified in the 8 articles (1,
4, 6, 8–10, 12, 13); and clients' self–respect, was identified in the 4 articles (6,

I was firm with my reasons and provided reasonable rationale for my actions. The surgeon, however, insisted on doing the procedure and argued that the patient had signed his own consents. I was steadfast in my decision with the support of my peers and managers. The case was eventually cancelled as we were not able to reach the family member who had power of attorney. This family member happened to be a lawyer by profession and he expressed his appreciation for my advocating for his father and my efforts in trying to reach him. Although this son knew that his father was scheduled for surgery, he was not aware that the surgeon decided on the time and day without fully informing him. I believe in this case, I carried myself with dignity and appropriately advocated for the patient in the interest of safety. I adhered to my organization's values of dignity and justice. With the patient being confused, I became his voice and refused to proceed with an invasive procedure that he likely did not even fully Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Meaning Of Dignity Dignity Here I am trying to put into words what I precieve to be the meaning of dignity. It's a bit complex because I don't want to say it is the same as respect because it is not. Dignity is something I believe we are all born with, while respect comes later on in life. People I know tend to confuse these two but I don't understand why. Dignity from what I have been taught in school and through my life experience has to do mainly with value. It's natural for people to want to feel valued, which in the long run is transformed to respect. I am not sure if I am making myself clear. HUMAN BIRTH DIGNITY =VALUE=RESPECT I am not shy when it comes to my self respect, it overflows. Even though not long ago I was not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Death with dignity Essay Dying With Dignity On Tuesday, March 24, an elderly Oregon woman, acting with the aid of a doctor, dosed herself with potent chemicals and died. The woman had lived with breast cancer for more than 20 years. By all accounts her final hours were private and peaceful, as she became one of the first people in American history to end her life lawfully with the aid of a physician (Oregonian A1). She was able to end her life peacefully due to controversial legislation passed in her state. The Death with Dignity Act was passed by the state of Oregon in 1994. It allows physicians to prescribe a lethal dose of medication so that a terminally ill patient can end his or her life. The requirements set forth by...show more content... Jones. In his dissent, he stated, "It does not violate the Controlled Substances Act's nonpreemption provision. It neither exceeds the Attorney General's statutory authority under the Controlled Substances Act" (The Federal Register 12). Therefore, this action would be detrimental to all those who do not choose to wait for death. In November of 2004 Ashcroft appealed to the Supreme Court and they will hear the case later this year. It is likely the Supreme Court will interpret the regulations in accordance with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals but if it fails to do so Oregon will be forced to repeal the statute. This law has brought peace to 171 terminally ill and suffering individuals in a very painless and humane manner. Only 3 of the 43 patients experienced complications in 2003. The only complications reported in these 3 cases were vomiting. One–half of all patients became unconscious within four minutes of ingesting the lethal medication and all died within 20 minutes. The range of time from ingestion to death was five minutes to 48 hours (Sixth Annual Report T3.9). Physician assisted suicide accomplishes much more than ending suffering before death. The right is of the individual and should be respected by our government. It is a fundamental freedom that we all should have. It allows a person to die with dignity and prevents the illness from killing them before they die. "The Death with Dignity Act is very similar to other forms of euthanasia Get more content on HelpWriting.net

(Dowbiggin) He also informed the press that "the Bollinger baby dies after six days or the nation is saddled with the cost of taking care of it and its offspring, none of whom would enjoy life anyway." (Dowbiggin) This was not his first or last infant he made that decision for. It was never determined how many died before this baby but he let at least 5 more die after this incident. This started, what in my mind, is a twisted characterization of the act of euthanasia. Madison Grant, an American lawyer, eugenicist and conservationist, made the comment "the elimination of defective infants was the welcome first step in the obliteration of the unfit." (Dowbiggin) Haiselden also exploited the media attention with a movie he actually starred in. "The Black Stork" was a "eugenic dramatization" of the Bollinger case. (Dowbiggin) The movie opened in 1916 and continued showing across America until 1928. The most surprising supporter, in my eyes, was Helen Keller who stated that "the definition of life, and that a right to life ought to be honored only when a potential for happiness, intelligence, and social usefulness existed. Dignity–conserving care is essential to providing effective palliative care because the clients at the dying phase are particularly vulnerable to loss of many aspects of dignity, including respect, autonomy, rights and privacy, due to their physical, psychological and spiritual sufferings in the dying process5. Acknowledging the importance of dignity is crucial in palliative nursing care as it shapes the delivery of care by influencing nurses' attitudes and behaviour toward caring with dignity for the clients with any life–threatening condition and their families5. A literature review for peer–reviewed journal articles was performed to identify the factors that may affect dignity and effects of dignity–conserving care on the clients and their families in the provision of palliative nursing care. From the 10 articles selected to be reviewed, 9 common themes (see Table 1) were identified as the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may influence the maintenance of dignity for clients and their families in the provision of palliative care. All 10 articles commonly identified one intrinsic factor, autonomy and independence, and one extrinsic factor, respect for clients. The intrinsic factors, empowerment and self–worth, were identified in the 9 articles (1, 6–13). The other intrinsic factors, individuals' spiritual belief, religion and culture were identified in the 8 articles (1, 4, 6, 8–10, 12, 13); and clients' self–respect, was identified in the 4 articles (6, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
