13. Some Testimonials
about “The Ancient Medieval Villages”
Terry Nason - Age: 43 (Orangeville – Canada), 2009
I had the most fabulous bike adventure trip with the
PortugalBike tour company. I have participated in other
adventure holidays in the past but this was my favourite and
definitely exceeded my expectations. The hotels that we
stayed at were amazing, all very quaint, interesting and one
night we even stayed in castle! The food, and I love to eat;
complete breakfasts to begin our day, picnic lunches that
were nutritious and represented local foods and cheeses and
finally our dinners – they were so wonderful (all of them)
complete with an excellent choice of wine selected by Jose
(who is very knowledgeable about the local wines). Another
key factor was I always felt in good hands in a foreign country
...Safety first; the route was well planned to consider traffic
volumes and road conditions, top of line equipment and very
knowledgeable guides. I would highly recommend this bike
tour to anybody interested in truly seeing this beautiful
country; from the cork trees, vineyards, storks, black pigs, hilly
terrain to the fabulous medieval towns we visited. I can’t wait
to come back and do the Algarve bike trip. Thanks so much
Jose and Cristina for leaving me with such a memorable
experience, you run a top class tour!
Neil Reiner, Age: 62 (Vancouver, BC – Canada), 2009
Just wanted to write and thank you for an amazing,
thoroughly enjoyable tour. It was a great experience, terrific
fun and exceeded my expectations in just about every way.
You put together a terrific package and deliver it in a highly
professional, but at the same time personal way that I truly
appreciated. I will recommend PortugalBike to all my friends
interested in cycle touring and have begun to do so already.
Hopefully, I will get to return with one or more members of
my family before too long. That would be great fun!
Marlène Bouchard and Raymond Gauthier, Ages: 53
(Sorel-Tracy, Québec - Canada), 2009
A little personal word just to thank you so much for this very
beautiful tour with PortugalBike where we enjoyed (again)
your country, the nice people, the fooooood!, the
weather!...everything! It was so cool! I think we just fall in
love with Portugal! This was our second stay here in Portugal
with PortugalBike but certainly not the last! We will be back
in a near future. “Prometemos e fazemos!!”

15. Some Testimonials
about “The Charming Pousadas in Alentejo”
Dave and Sue White, Ages: 56 & 55 (Luanda – Angola), 2010
Our “The Charming Pousadas in Alentejo” and “Towards the
Algarve” trips were our second and third trips with you – have
you had any clients that have returned for a third time?
Our first trip in 2007 was on mountain bikes where we visited
several castles – Linhares, Marvão, Sesimbra, Peninche, &
Óbidos. We realized then that Portugal is a great venue for
biking – the right topography, climate, rideable trails or quite
roads and your organization!
The “Pousadas” trip was great. The trip was well organized
from the bike route to the selection of the accommodations.
Cycling through the hills surrounded with the olive and cork
trees was awesome. The well-planned route, attention to
detail, and quality bikes combined for a stress free holiday.
Route-finding was never a worry with the GPS! We always
looked forward to each “Pousada” at the end of each day to
recoup and relax after the daily cycle. Thank you Jose!
“Toward the Algarve” bike tour was a super way to combine
landscapes with cycling. We enjoyed this trip because it
offered more cycling and less elevation. The inland coastal
landscapes combined with a stunning finale in Lagos were
great. All of the accommodations were comfortable and of a
high standard. The night at the Monte João Roupeiro (Rural
tourism) and the grouper kebabs in Odeceixe was great.
Again the tour was well-designed and you made sure that the
smallest details were attended to. Thanks for the great trips.
We hope to join you again, maybe next year.
David Bugeja, Age: 58 (Melbourne, Victoria – Australia), 2010
My wife and I had the wonderful opportunity to cycle the
Charming Pousadas ride. The whole trip was a fantastic
experience which will leave us with lasting memories. The
cycling, scenery, meals and accommodations were
memorable. When booking a trip over the internet one is
always a little nervous about the reliability of the company
and whether the trip will match expectations. Any such fears
were quickly dispelled after the first email dealings with
Portugal Bike. They were totally professional in every aspect
and provided all the information we needed quickly. During
the bike trip Jose and Christina were totally dedicated to
making sure we had an enjoyable time and experienced the
real Portugal. Without any hesitation I would highly
recommend Portugal Bike to anyone considering a bike trip in
Portugal. My wife and I hope to return again to do one of their
other cycling trips.

17. Some Testimonials
about “Jewels Of Portugal”
Kristin Bowman, Age: 47 (California – United States), 2012
After 8 days of challenging rides through the diverse terrain of
Portugal, covering cork tree plantations, limestone quarries,
towns made of marble, medieval fortresses and castles,
vineyards, fruit farms, expansive views, we have shared a
hundred stories with each other and our hosts, Jose and
Cristina. We have been well feed, enjoying fresh monk fish,
lamb, Portuguese stew, chicken, shrimp, eggs, ham, cheese, a
wide variety of crisp and flavorful veggies, and sweet juicy
Portuguese pears, melons, oranges and peaches. The green
and white wine, light and refreshing for the warm nights of
the inland Alentejo region is a great treat after the long ride.
We were so lucky to have such engaging, friendly and
informative hosts. Beyond the incredibly enchanting country
of Portugal, I think what Jennifer and I are most in awe of is
Jose and Cristina; they are funny, down to earth, informative,
fun, and curious, they provide excellent customer service,
encouragement, and friendship. We got lucky and we both
feel very fortunate.
Jennifer Perry, Age: 24 (New York – United States), 2012
By the end of the trip I had almost forgotten that José and
Cristina were two people running a business. They felt, rather,
like two great friends gifting us an adventure of a lifetime. I
was a first-time long-distance cyclist, and was so encouraged
and comforted by their support, reassurance professionalism.
I not only took with me an experience I continue to think
about everyday and that will stay with me the rest of my life,
but also two truly wonderful friendships.
My husband and I just finished the self-guided Jewels of
Portugal Tour. We have been on several self-guided European
bicycle tours. The bicycles were top-notch and were in new
condition. Cristina returned my emails immediately before the
trip -- I wondered if she ever slept! The places they choose for
you to stay are gorgeous and historic. The roads we were on
had hardly any cars on them. We rode through fields and
fields and cork and olive trees, as well as along the coast. The
Portuguese people are some of the kindest we have met in
Europe. The climbs are steep on the tour, but worth it.

19. Some Testimonials
about “Towards The Algarve”
Gary Kate, Lynne & Susan Diamond, Ages: 57, 56 & 55
(Claremont, California – U.S.A.), 2009
In recent years, we have bicycled in France, Holland, Belgium,
Germany, Greece, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.
On several of these trips, we took our own bicycles and made
lodging arrangements ourselves. I guess you can say that we
enjoy learning about European countries from pedaling a
bicycle. No trip that we have taken has been better planned
and executed than the two we did through PortugalBike. We
are thrilled we used this fabulous company. Owned and
operated by a Portuguese husband and wife team, the care
they take before and during the trip is exemplary. The routes
are very well chosen, providing a variety of landscapes and
terrain. Although Portugal doesn’t have dedicated bike lanes
like Holland, every effort was made to choose roads friendly
to bicycles. The lodging was very special, and each night we
stayed in a hotel different from the evening before, always
special in its own way. We especially miss the breakfasts!
PortugalBike was never far from us, and if we had a question
or a problem, it was resolved before the day was over. We are
especially glad that we chose two different trips – The Ancient
Medieval Villages and Towards Algarve – in two very different
areas of the country, as it gave us two contrasting views of the
country. We are grateful to PortugalBike for making all this
happen, and even more grateful that we now have more of an
appreciation for Portuguese life, food, culture, history, and
wine!
Werner Peerters, Age: 34 (Gent – Belgium), 2009
My experiences with PortugalBike left me behind with a big
concern: Where on Earth can I experience a cycling trip as
excellent as in Portugal? I guess that nowhere I will
experience such a warm and generous hospitality, top notch
material, professional guidance, delicious food and wine,
bright sunshine and a refreshing sea breeze as on the way to
the Portuguese Algarve. There is only one option left to me: I
definitely have to return next year for another Portuguese
cycling holidays with PortugalBike!

21. Some Testimonials
about “The Quiet Villages on the Mountains”
Carolyn Baer, Ages: 52 (Moncton - Canada), 2014
This was our second trip with Portugal bike, this time doing
The Quiet Villages on the Mountains. Spectacular scenery,
great hotels and as always amazing hosts. If you want to see
Portugal by bike, this is the group to go with. On day one, Jose
and Cristina are your guides, on day two they are friends and
by day three they become part of your extended family! We
have done the south and the north of Portugal and both trips
were outstanding yet different. The descriptions of the biking
are very accurate. The bikes are high end and very well
maintained. Jose and Cristina go out of their way to ensure
that everyone has a great time and is comfortable with the
biking. Don't look any further if you plan to bike in Portugal.
Barbara Cooper, Age: 57 (Mississauga– Canada), 2014
This was our second trip with Jose and Cristina, and we were
extremely happy with all aspects (we took the Medieval
Villages tour in May 2013). Jose and Cristina have planned a
challenging, scenic and interesting route, with very quiet
roads of smooth pavement. The bikes were of highest quality
and a pleasure to ride. Hotels were well located along the
route and offered comfortable rooms, good amenities, and
delicious breakfasts. We had a 5 hour hike on Day 4, which
was a nice diversion from cycling and offered scenery we
would not otherwise have experienced. Cristina provided
refreshments at desirable locations along the route and
nutritious lunches. Hosts are both very friendly, helpful and
knowledgeable of the region. They accommodated our
specific needs with a smile (dropped us off at our hotel
instead of at the airport which was wonderful and much
appreciated). We hope to take another trip with Portugal Bike!
Thank you, Jose and Cristina!

about “The Amazing Algarve Coast”
Matthew & Nina Casanova, Ages: 31 & 30 (Michigan, USA),
2011
Coming from New York city, it was absolutely magnificent to
ride through the beautiful Portuguese country side for a week.
Still, as in all tours, the guides make all the difference and we
couldn’t have asked for more wonderful people than Jose and
Cristina who showed the true splendor of the country they
are so proud of. Each night of our adventure was completely
different and we were constantly amazed by the great food
...as well as the wine and beer. Both being in our late 20’s it
was a great mix of trying to keep up with Jose on the bike by
day, then touring the cities by night. We would recommend
this trip to absolutely everyone and plan on going back soon.
What a wonderful vacation I had! The bikes, ride, scenery,
company, conversation & overall experience was just perfect.
You two work seamlessly and everything was smooth and
enjoyable! Jose - thank you for the great guide - it was easy to
watch you ride and follow along! Cristina - thank you for the
lunches/picnics. I truly enjoyed the bike tour because you two
were such a pleasure to be with! Obrigada!
Spencer Stenmark, Age: 28 (New York, USA), 2011
I could not have imagined a better way to experience Portugal
than on a bike, nor could I imagine a better run bicycle tour
company than PortugalBike. From the moment they picked us
up, the husband and wife team of Cristina and Jose ensured
that our trip was seamless and worry-free. The
accommodations were terrific as were the expertly chosen
bike routes. By venturing off the main roads onto trails only
accessible by bike and foot, we were able to experience the
true beauty of the Algarve. I would highly recommend
PortugalBike to anyone seeking a relaxing yet adventurous
vacation. We hope to be back soon.
Sandra Stenmark, Age: 59 (Colorado, USA), 2011
Because of our great experience with PortugalBike Tours in

about “The Beautiful Alentejo Beaches”
Henry Jay, Age: 57 (Adelaide – Australia), 2010
My bicycle tour with your company was fantastic and a
highlight of my European holiday. Riding through the Alentejo
and Algarve regions gave me a great sense of satisfaction, fun
and memories of Australia, especially the amazing beaches
and of course the gum trees!!.
You have an obvious professional company/business. Jose was
so much fun on the road; giving us a sense of the rich history
of Portugal, a wonderful passion for his country; a caring
attitude for his clients and an appreciation for our respective
countries and culture. Cristina is a delightful lady and person.
She always had a smiling face, greeting us with warm and
enthusiasm. She like Jose always demonstrated a
genuine interest in the countries we had come from and
answered our questions and queries in detail.
Cristina and Jose are a fantastic couple who are a credit to
their country. The hotels and restaurants they selected were
very special. I (and my fellow travelling companions) loved the
local Portuguese food and wine in the different towns and
regions. The scenery along the coast and inland was
tremendous. In fact, a WOW factor!! You don't anticipate
how beautiful the terrain in a small country like Portugal will
be. A huge bonus was seeing so many gum trees!!
I highlly recommend Portugal Bike as one of the best bicycle
tour operators in Portugal. Not only because of the
professional manner they conduct out their business, but
their personal, friendly, genuine and fun nature.
I will return to Portugal because of my bicycle tour with Jose
and Cristina. What a blast!!
Ed & Sue Seaman, Ages 51 (Streamwood, Illinois - U.S.A.),

Our bike tour, the Beautiful Alentejo Beaches, was
outstanding, and the second we arrived our tour guides
informative demeanor made this trip very comfortable.
Beginning with port wine and raspberry cake at reception we
immediately hit it off with our riding mates. The charming
hotels with champagne breakfast started every day off on the
right track. On each days ride our guides encompassing
insights of Portuguese culture bound with historical
references absorbed our spirit. The lunch stops with fresh
farmers cheese and fruits ensured us that one more hill
wasn't so bad and the afternoon beer stops motivated
everyone of us to never stop smiling. Each nights hotel
welcomed the end of a days ride as the beginning of a
wonderful evening. The restaurants were a delightful mix of
local food, wine and culture including a private tour of a port
wine cellar. Starting out each day without expectations Jose
and Christina exceeded them all. We would love to do this trip
again. Thank You Very Much.

about “The Charming Pousadas in the North”
Susan Wilkins - Age: 60 (Vancouver, BC - Canada), 2012
My daughter and I just completed this self guided tour in
June. It was everything as advertised and more. The bikes
were great quality, the route was well thought out, the maps
and GPS worked perfectly. The pousadas are wonderful and
you will feel that you deserve it after riding up the hills to get
to them! Jose and Christina were very gracious hosts and
ambassadors for their country. We can't recommend this
company highly enough, and we will be back for another trip -
with more family members.
John McCarthy - Age: 60 (Ottawa, Canada), 2012
This is a special tour company owned and operated by a very
special couple. Jose was our steady and informative leader on
the road. Kristina drove the van and shopped daily for
delicious local food for our fabulous roadside picnics. The care
and attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the trip
- the spectacular accommodation, excellent out-of-the-way
restaurants and beautiful scenic routes. We opted for the
guided tour but our fellow travellers also enjoyed the GPS
self-guided option. For our group though, spending 6 days in
the company of Jose and Cristina, native Portuguese who
know and love their country, made all the difference.

We had a wonderful time on your Charming Pousadas of the
North tour. The landscape was lush, verdant and varied. Jose
planned a wonderful route, as far away from traffic as
possible--country roads, farm and forest lanes, cobblestone
paths through villages, even a segment of a Roman Road. In
addition to planning a unique and satisfying route, Jose was a
pleasure to ride with, full of cheer and a font of cultural and
historical information. Cristina provide solid van support,
perfect picnic lunches. The accommodations were wonderful,
luxe and filled with history. Cristina and Jose also were perfect
dinner hosts, choosing restaurants wisely, and creating a
warm flow of conversation. The overall experience was a
wonderful introduction to Portugal that only thoughtful and
gracious Portuguese hosts could provide. We are veterans of
about 20 inn-to-inn bike touring trips with a variety of touring
groups, and found PortugalBike to be at the top in terms of
the overall quality of our experience. We're looking forward to
booking another trip with PortugalBike in the near future.

30. Some Testimonials
about “History, Heritage & Coast”
Kristine Ledermann - (Florida - USA), 2006
Thank you for the best vacation ever. (...) I am so impressed
with your company and I am telling everyone; you were tour
guides, personal trainers, translators, concierge, taxi, caterers,
historians, friends and professional business operators.
PortugalBike takes care of everything, all you need to do is
ride and enjoy!! Great home made lunches, excellent local
restaurants, transportation and translation services you will
be thrilled with your vacation. The time I spent off the bicycle
was as interesting and diverse as during the ride. PortugalBike
is priceless and you (Jose and Cristina) are a pleasure.
Spending a week with 2 total strangers and trusting their
judgement was a concern of mine before selecting my trip. I
recommend you both on your character and integrity; you are
both excellent people (personally and as business owners). I
HIGHLY recommend this trip to everyone and anyone who has
a pulse and a desire to see a beautiful country. By bike, land,
sea and van, ocean coast, cliffs, beach, caves 45m under,
castles, farms, countryside villages, vacation hot spots, fancy
hotels, sheep herds and my favourite - Obidos, the city inside
the castle walls, it's amazing. Thank you again for
everything!!!
Kimberly Mathisen Ages: 49 (London, ON - Canada), 2010
The tour “History, Heritage and Coast” lived up to its name as
we rode along beautiful scenic stretches of ocean (from a
height of course). The quaint villages and fields of flowers and
crops were additional views of Portugal that I was so glad to
be seeing close up by bike. I kept running out of batteries due
to the number of photos that just had to be taken in Óbidos.
We felt spoiled by Jose & Christina who took care of all our
needs from picnics and snacks to great dinners and wonderful
accommodation. They were knowledgeable and personable
and have set the bar high for biking holidays. Even before the
tour was over we were discussing the details of our next trip
with Portugal Bike! Thanks for the wonderful holiday in
Portugal.

33. Some Testimonials
about “Marble, Wine & Heritage”
Barbara Morin - Age: 68 (Calgary - Canada), 2014
We have taken many biking trips throughout Europe and
other parts of the world but this one tops our experiences to
date. We travelled with Portugal Bike through the Alentejo
region of Portugal for a week and experienced Wine, Castles,
Marble and more. The owners, Cristina and Jose have the
ability and a wonderful enthusiasm to put together as flawless
a trip as we could have imagined. No detail was overlooked
and we were treated to countless unexpected surprises and
good fun throughout the trip. Everything was first class in our
opinions with superb attention to detail in the bikes (which
rode like velvet, 30 gears, equipped with cyclometers, mirrors,
and helmets provided), the guiding - José is a passionate
cyclist who thoughtfully took us thorough briefing about
proper use and care of bikes, road etiquette, daily information
about the region, cities, and imparted ( as did Cristina) lots of
'local knowledge' explained clearly on a timely basis. Because
Portugal has a long and dense history spiced with complex
relationships with the Moors and the Spanish for instance, the
architecture, religion, food often reflects these influences and
made for some fascinating discoveries for us as travellers -
especially when one travels by bike. We were delighted with
Cristina and José's selection of fascinating accommodations
(castles, monasteries for example), we ate and drank
authentic, beautifully prepared food and wine of the Alentejo
region and appreciated the balance of interesting terrain to
cycle with experiences which ranged from visits to wineries to
marble quarries, groves of cork oaks and olive trees. Overall,
we cannot recommend highly enough this wonderful couple
and their company Portugal Bike.

35. Some Testimonials
about “Camino de Santiago de Compostela”
Paula Juliano, Age: 29 (Florianópolis – Brazil), 2011
The Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela by bicycle was
the trip that marked the year 2011 for ever in my memory and
my heart. I had never been in Portugal or Spain before and it
was a surprisingly wonderful discover. I and a friend went with
PortugalBike Team who led us along amazing trails and
breathtaking landscapes... each curve surprised us by its beauty:
along the way there were the hydrangeas in different tones of
blue, the architecture of the houses in the small villages, the
constructions used to store the corn which I don't remember the
name anymore ["espigueiros"], the climbs that demanded
determination and balance, finally... we met our support van
and Cristina who offered us delicious picnics consisting of home-
made cakes, bread and delicious cheeses ...Cristina we were
always glad to meeting you ...ahahah! .. and then cycling
again..to the finish line of the day...and the surprises kept on
coming along the way with the vine plantations colouring our
eyes, the centenary trees and the forests which gave shade to
our bodies, there were contrasts between the big cities with
contemporary architecture, viaducts everywhere, omnipotent
cathedrals... and then we turned to inland and there were small
simple chapels full of charm, the narrow dirt-roads, trails with
rocks and Roman bridges that challenge our balance, strength
and determination teaching us how to overcome. By night fall
we were rewarded for our efforts ... luxury hotels where we
were treated like princesses, first quality dinners and a full
satisfaction of being at the right place at the right time! Thank
Renata Asprino, Age: 36 (Florianópolis - Brazil), 2011
I have always wanted to do the Way of St. James (Camino de
Santiago de Compostela), but I had never taken the initiative
to do it. On the other hand, I love cycling, so when I
discovered PortugalBike website, it was a happy coincidence!
The booking process was easy and the tour itself was a
wonderful surprise! I had never been to Portugal before, and
today I can say this is one of my favourite countries.
PortugalBike tour exceeded all my expectations: great bikes,
Jose and Cristina were very professional, always concerned
with our welfare, the hotels were wonderful, much better
than we expected!! The food was great, the wine was
delicious, the landscape was amazing, and the temperature
was very pleasant for cycling. I hope one day to return to
Portugal and I certainly will include a bike tour on my
programme!
you very much to PortugalBike Team, because you exceeded our
expectations, offering a top-notch service, excellent bikes that
almost cycled by themselves. I thank you and I wish to come
back soon! These were wonderful days with an excellent
company. Thank you PortugalBike for the History classes, as well
as Culture, Fine Arts, Cooking, Wine and Pedal. I am very proud
of you and I am very happy that I found you along the Trails of
Life! And as the pilgrims say: Make a good Way!
