4. The Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012
is also known as the Reproductive Health Law and Republic Act
No. 10354 (RH Law). The law grants universal access to methods
of contraception, fertility control, sexual education, and mother
care in the Philippines. Lots of controversy surrounding the
legalization of the law was present during the year 2012. Many
misunderstood what it meant. Most of the people who were
against it had concerns about it promoting sexual activity. In
reality, it was a way for the government to prevent the spread of
STDs, the rise of teenage pregnancies, and the unpreparedness
of parents.
Sex Education
in the Philippines
Defined
5. The law was officially
effective on January 17,
2013. This meant that
schools in the Philippines
under the supervision of the
Department of Education
(DepEd) introduced topics in
relation to sex education
starting grade 4 to grade 12.
Young children who are in
elementary school will be
introduced to the
reproductive system, this is
the organ system in charge
of reproduction. Later on,
when they are older, the
topics will be more
complicated, and will
discuss topics like the
fertilization process of a
human.
There are parents who share
sentiments that even though
this law was implemented
already, they did not feel its
impact at all on their kids.
Through the research
conducted, One parent
expressed that he felt no
presence whatsoever and
thinks that the school and
the home need to work hand
in hand to discuss this topic.
Especially towards older
children.
6. Teaching children about sex, sounds wrong right? Of course, sex
education is not about encouraging children to have sex at an
early age. It’s all about awareness and information about the
natural functions of the body. As they get older they’re going to
learn about it one day.
Mayo Clinic suggests that at the age of 5 years old a child should
be taught about consent and body basics. They should be able to
recognize their own boundaries by this time. At ages 7 to 9 years
old, they can be introduced to the concept of puberty, as they may
start to experience this. These topics do fall into sex education
and parents can actually help their own children in educating
them about these topics in the household.
According to planned parenthood, it’s best
to have small conversations over time
instead of one big talk.
Importance of Teaching
Sex Education to
Children
7. Educating children about these topics doesn’t need to be very
technical. Everyday occurrences and conversations can help
them understand these better. For example, if someone close is
pregnant, parents can introduce the concept of pregnancy to
their child. Parents can also teach young children about
boundaries by defining what gestures are ok and what gestures
are not. They can teach their child about social norms and when it
is appropriate to hug someone and when it is inappropriate.
When children become teenagers parents may still want to have
the conversation of sex. With older children, parents can guide
them on media that is appropriate for their age and what is not.
With adolescents, parents may give their child “the talk” and have
a conversation about “safe sex” and being responsible. This is not
to encourage them, it is for their protection and awareness since
the topic of sex and sexuality is complicated. The purpose of this
is that maybe once the child grows up and decides to be sexually
active, they are safe, protected, and informed.
8. Relationships in general are a complicated topic. There are many
different types and each is unique. Between two lovers, feelings
can get intense and sometimes situations can get out of hand.
Sadly, there are those who have trouble recognizing what is
healthy and what is not. Here are some signs of what a healthy
relationship may look like.
According to Sarah Treleaven from Time magazine, romantic
relationships greatly affect the psychology of people.
Relationships tend to not work out because of many different
reasons. One of them is the lack of communication. Lack of
communication can cause mistrust and misunderstandings,
these can later lead into stored frustrations and grudges. Clear
communication between partners is very important so both sides
are understood. Maintaining a strong emotional connection
fosters healthy and positive relationships. As parents, it is
important to guide children to help them understand what good
relationships are like. Being an example by communicating well,
understanding each other, and overall guidance can help the
child be secure in their future relationships. This is why having a
good support system at home is important.
Building Healthy
Relationships
9. Parents should guide their children on
how to set boundaries, recognize toxic
traits, and what responsibilities come
with a romantic relationship. According
to social worker Sherry Gaba, toxic
relationships are based on the need for
control, conflict, and competition.
Jealousy, blame, and gaslighting are
also present in toxic relationships.
Setting boundaries, clear
communication, and guidance may help
prevent people from getting into
unhealthy/toxic relationships.
10. According to the research conducted, many parents answered that
they feel that emphasis on family planning is needed. They expressed
through a survey that it is a topic they would like to see talked about
more in the mainstream media and education. Family planning is all
about planning your future plans for having children and providing for
them. Planning the amount of children you can sustain or whether or
not to have children is already a form of family planning.
Family Planning
11. A participant from the research
shared that they only became
aware that family planning
existed when they attended
mandatory work seminars about
family planning and sex
education. It was expressed that
if they were more aware of these
things they would have done
some things differently earlier in
their life. Another parent stated
that even though sex might be a
sensitive topic to talk about to
their children, at some point it is
needed. They expressed that they
are concerned about the teenage
pregnancy cases in the
Philippines. As someone with
daughters, they feel the need to
protect their children and make
sure that they are aware and
educated on the importance of
family planning.
Starting a family is no joke. As the head of a
household and parent to children there are
sacrifices and responsibilities that come with it.
Planning a family and sticking to that plan helps
one’s future and quality of life.
12. Contraceptives are tools that help one prevent Sexually
Transmitted Infections (STIs), Sexually Transmitted Diseases
(STDs), and unwanted pregnancies. Abortion is not legal in the
Philippines. This means that mothers who want to terminate their
pregnancy cannot do it in a safe manner as doctors in the
Philippines do not practice abortions. To prevent unwanted
pregnancies from happening people may resort to
contraceptives.
The condom is one of the most common forms of contraceptives
used. It acts as a barrier to prevent semen and sperm from
entering the partner’s body during sex. Semen can carry STIs and
can also fertilize eggs. This is how STIs and pregnancy are
prevented.
Contraception and
Birth Control Methods
13. The Plan B pill and birth control pills are both taken orally. The
difference between the two is that Plan B is only taken once,
supposedly under 48 hours after sex. Birth control is taken
multiple times during a woman’s cycle so that ovulation is
prevented.
The contraceptive injection is also known as Depo-Provera, since
that is a well known brand name for contraceptive injections.
These injections are administered by health professionals and
contain the hormone progestin. It suppresses ovulation and is
injected every 3 months.
An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a T-shaped plastic around the size
of a coin. It is inserted into the woman’s uterus. According to
Lonna P. Gordon, MD pregnancy is prevented because it does not
allow the sperm to fertilize the egg. IUDs coated in progestin
cervical mucus thins the uterine lining. This may cause ovulation
to stop.
A vasectomy is a surgical procedure done on males. It is 100
percent effective in preventing pregnancies. It cuts the supply of
a man’s sperm to the semen. Although it is counted as a
permanent form of birth control, it is a reversible procedure.
14. Sexually transmitted infections (STI), sexually transmitted
diseases (STD), and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are
things people should be aware about, especially those who are
sexually active.
STDs, STIs, and HIV can happen if people who are
infected pass it on to others through exchanging
sexual fluid from the body and blood. It is usually
passed on to others through sex.
Syphilis, gonorrhea, and herpes are different kinds of STIs. These
are infections that can later become STDs. Hepatitis, Chlamydia,
Trichomoniasis, and Syphilis are all classified as STDs. And this is
actually very dangerous because if it is left untreated it can lead
to HIV and then acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Anyone can get this no matter what gender or sexuality. There is
no cure for AIDS.
STI’s, STD’s, and HIV
15. Common symptoms include
flu-like signs, headache, muscle
aches, fever, and lymph nodes on
the groin. The private parts can also
be swollen and lumpy.
It is possible to get STIs, STDs,
and HIV through lots of sexual
contact with different people. It
can affect everyone. Bringing
awareness to these things can
save lives. Parents with older
children who are of age need to
make sure their child is aware.
