2. About the Book
• I read “Bang the Drum Slowly” by Mark Harris.
• Bang the Drum Slowly is about two baseball players,
Henry and Bruce that play on the fictional team The New
York Mammoths.
• They go through many obstacles together, on the field
and off the field.
• Bruce shocks Henry with the news that he has been
diagnosed with a deadly disease and will probably die
soon.
• Henry and Bruce continue to play on the team, making the
most out of the time Bruce has left.
• The themes friendship, time is fleeting, and coping with
death are the most prevalent throughout the book.

3. • Mark Harris was an American novelist born in Mount
Mark Harris Vernon, New York.
• He spent childhood in Mount Vernon and at age 11
started keeping a journal, which would continue till
the day he died. Harris had no sibling he just grew
up with his mother and father, Carlyle and Ruth.
• Mark went to Mount Vernon high school and
graduated in 1940. Right after high school he went
to work at Paul Winkler’s press alliance news agency
in New York City.
• His first novel in 1946, “Trumpet to the World”, the
story of a young black soldier married to a white
woman who is put on trial for striking back at a
white officer.
