2. An accomplished student athlete, Cody
Saltsman won a number of awards as a
member of several Steubenville High School
varsity teams. Cody Saltsman stands out as a
three-year letter recipient as well as winner of
the Drs. Press/Macedonia/Giannamore Student
Athlete Award.
For the student athlete, finding a balance
between academic and team responsibilities
can be a daunting task. Sports often become
a driving passion and can help students
develop a strong work ethic and sense of
responsibility.
3. However, the demands of practices,
games, and even travel can leave little
time for study. Educational and athletic
experts stress that students and families
should make enough time for academics,
as the majority of students end up
achieving career success through their
studies rather than through their sports.
Many student athletes find that a weekly
schedule helps them to set aside time for
studying in the midst of games and
practice schedules.
4. Parents can assist their children in
formulating schedules and later adjusting
them when an upcoming test or project
necessitates missing practice or when a
championship game requires the
rescheduling of study time. Student athletes
also need their parents to help them find
the time to relax and identify when they
may be feeling overwhelmed. At all times,
the health and well-being of the young
athlete should remain paramount.
