GAME DAY THOUGTHS
 Game Day Itinerary
 Shoot-Around when you can
 Walk Through
 What time do you want team dressed and ready to warm-up?
 When will you meet with team?
 Review Scout?
 Review Game Plan?
 Team Warm-Up-What do they need to do to be ready to play?
 When do you return to the floor prior to the game?
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Know Before the Tip
 How many kids do you need to play in the first half?
 If he may play in the second half, play him in the first half?
 Do you have a pre-arranged time for subs?
 Do you want to get weaker or stronger when you sub?
 When will you accept your team being the weakest? First 5, Second 5, Third 5, Fourth 5?
 Do you have your team ready to communicate without a time-out?
 Let the game develop. Don’t over coach at the beginning.
 Is your opponent playing the expected defense and offense? If not, can you
identify what you are seeing?
 ASSISTANTS MUST BE EMOTIONALLY REMOVED FROM THE GAME-NEVER GET ON THE
OFFICIALS!
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Assistants must keep an accurate game chart?
 Assistants must play a role in the game?
 What are their jobs?
 Are they just sitting on the bench watching?
 Must communicate in a few concise phrases.
 Have you thought out your adjustments?
 If they do this or make this change, then we will do this?
 Preparation over inspiration – Find a minimum of 30 minutes within 4 hours of the game to
review your game plan. Try to anticipate their adjustments and have your own
adjustments ready.
 Work hard to avoid officiating. Coaches who “work” the officials aren’t working
their players
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Figure out how to finish strong at the half
 The best way to come out of the half with momentum is to go into the half with
momentum.
 Are you flexible enough to show your opponent a bluff before the half?
 Halftime
 Someone must be responsible for the time on the clock
 Assistant must make sure their chart is correct
 Leave team alone for first 5 minutes
 You can’t make 20 corrections, so don’t try. Decide:
 What you want to do, then what your lineup will be, or who you want to play and what
can you do with that lineup?
 Need to get your stats quickly
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Are you getting the shots you want?
 What type of shots is your opponent getting?
 Are a couple of their players killing you?
 Address team from 10-5
 You can 3-5 points/adjustment. Maybe 6-8 with an experienced team
 How do you want to send them back out?
 Chew them out?
 Pump them up?
 Something that will help them win?
 Save 5-3 for emergencies(have someone tell you when there is 5 mins left)
 Back on the floor by 3
 Get your starters in and find out who they are going with? What does their lineup mean?
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Coaching the Timeout
 Prepare your team to play as if timeouts were not part of the game.
 Save them with inferior opponents. Don’t hesitate to use them with superior
opponents.
 Players must hustle to the bench.
 Assistants have :15 to make pertinent suggestions
 Only you speak to the team, unless you tell the assistant to chime in.
 All players must pay attention in the huddle(Film it from time to time)
 2 or 3 points to players. Don’t confuse them. Be calm and concise.
 Sometimes Humor is seen as confidence.
 Sometimes you call timeout just to break momentum: tell players just that.
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Second Half
 Be quicker to use timeouts in the second half
 When do you give your players a break?
 Do you change your shot selection at any point?
 If you are ahead are you going to try and blow them out or play the clock?
 Do you need to break their rhythm? Timeout? Defensive Change?
 Ahead Late
 Offense
 Fake Delay
 Make good shooters chase
 Who do you want handling the ball for you?
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Defense
 How do they shoot the 3?
 Taller/Longer man on best jump shooters
 Quicker man on drivers
 Defend without fouling
 Up 3 Late? Do you foul? If yes, when?
 Sub to set your defense?
 Behind Late
 Offense
 Don’t rush. 2-3 minutes is a long time.
 Get ball in front court quickly to save time.
 Drive and kick. Put pressure on the defense.
 Attack the lane.
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Defense
 If you can’t press then don’t. Instead of 8 becoming 2, it may become 16.
 Become more aggressive when they stop looking to score.
 At :30 seconds the :05 second rule is automatic
 Deny good foul shooters and allow receptions by weak ones.
 Late Game Press Offense
 Have your basic sets and check offs
 Get the ball to your best free throw shooters
 Have special OB’s for side in the front and back court
 Get into an X
 :05 second call is preferable to a turnover.
GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)
 Post Game
 Get off the floor and in the locker room. Do not hang around with friends,
parents, etc.
 Keep it short after the game
 If you played well and win, don’t dampen their enthusiasm. Time for that
tomorrow. If you played poorly and won, tell them so, but a win is a win-don’t
forget that. If you played well and lost, understand they’re hurting, be honest,
but be positive. If you played poorly and lost, make it clear that is not acceptable,
but don’t harangue. Make your point and get out.
 Don’t forget they are all you’ve got until next year. Don’t beat them down so that
they won’t play for you.

  • 31. SEASON BREAKDOWN  Breakdown the Season Into Thirds  First Third-Figuring Out Best Group to Play/Testing and Adjusting Lineups  Second Third-Settling in on lineup/Final adjustments to things we are doing  Final Third-Everyone should be comfortable/confident in roles and what we are doing offensively and defensively
  • 32. GAME DAY THOUGTHS  Game Day Itinerary  Shoot-Around when you can  Walk Through  What time do you want team dressed and ready to warm-up?  When will you meet with team?  Review Scout?  Review Game Plan?  Team Warm-Up-What do they need to do to be ready to play?  When do you return to the floor prior to the game?
  • 33. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Know Before the Tip  How many kids do you need to play in the first half?  If he may play in the second half, play him in the first half?  Do you have a pre-arranged time for subs?  Do you want to get weaker or stronger when you sub?  When will you accept your team being the weakest? First 5, Second 5, Third 5, Fourth 5?  Do you have your team ready to communicate without a time-out?  Let the game develop. Don’t over coach at the beginning.  Is your opponent playing the expected defense and offense? If not, can you identify what you are seeing?  ASSISTANTS MUST BE EMOTIONALLY REMOVED FROM THE GAME-NEVER GET ON THE OFFICIALS!
  • 34. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Assistants must keep an accurate game chart?  Assistants must play a role in the game?  What are their jobs?  Are they just sitting on the bench watching?  Must communicate in a few concise phrases.  Have you thought out your adjustments?  If they do this or make this change, then we will do this?  Preparation over inspiration – Find a minimum of 30 minutes within 4 hours of the game to review your game plan. Try to anticipate their adjustments and have your own adjustments ready.  Work hard to avoid officiating. Coaches who “work” the officials aren’t working their players
  • 35. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Figure out how to finish strong at the half  The best way to come out of the half with momentum is to go into the half with momentum.  Are you flexible enough to show your opponent a bluff before the half?  Halftime  Someone must be responsible for the time on the clock  Assistant must make sure their chart is correct  Leave team alone for first 5 minutes  You can’t make 20 corrections, so don’t try. Decide:  What you want to do, then what your lineup will be, or who you want to play and what can you do with that lineup?  Need to get your stats quickly
  • 36. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Are you getting the shots you want?  What type of shots is your opponent getting?  Are a couple of their players killing you?  Address team from 10-5  You can 3-5 points/adjustment. Maybe 6-8 with an experienced team  How do you want to send them back out?  Chew them out?  Pump them up?  Something that will help them win?  Save 5-3 for emergencies(have someone tell you when there is 5 mins left)  Back on the floor by 3  Get your starters in and find out who they are going with? What does their lineup mean?
  • 37. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Coaching the Timeout  Prepare your team to play as if timeouts were not part of the game.  Save them with inferior opponents. Don’t hesitate to use them with superior opponents.  Players must hustle to the bench.  Assistants have :15 to make pertinent suggestions  Only you speak to the team, unless you tell the assistant to chime in.  All players must pay attention in the huddle(Film it from time to time)  2 or 3 points to players. Don’t confuse them. Be calm and concise.  Sometimes Humor is seen as confidence.  Sometimes you call timeout just to break momentum: tell players just that.
  • 38. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Second Half  Be quicker to use timeouts in the second half  When do you give your players a break?  Do you change your shot selection at any point?  If you are ahead are you going to try and blow them out or play the clock?  Do you need to break their rhythm? Timeout? Defensive Change?  Ahead Late  Offense  Fake Delay  Make good shooters chase  Who do you want handling the ball for you?
  • 39. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Defense  How do they shoot the 3?  Taller/Longer man on best jump shooters  Quicker man on drivers  Defend without fouling  Up 3 Late? Do you foul? If yes, when?  Sub to set your defense?  Behind Late  Offense  Don’t rush. 2-3 minutes is a long time.  Get ball in front court quickly to save time.  Drive and kick. Put pressure on the defense.  Attack the lane.
  • 40. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Defense  If you can’t press then don’t. Instead of 8 becoming 2, it may become 16.  Become more aggressive when they stop looking to score.  At :30 seconds the :05 second rule is automatic  Deny good foul shooters and allow receptions by weak ones.  Late Game Press Offense  Have your basic sets and check offs  Get the ball to your best free throw shooters  Have special OB’s for side in the front and back court  Get into an X  :05 second call is preferable to a turnover.
  • 41. GAME DAY THOUGHTS (Cont.)  Post Game  Get off the floor and in the locker room. Do not hang around with friends, parents, etc.  Keep it short after the game  If you played well and win, don’t dampen their enthusiasm. Time for that tomorrow. If you played poorly and won, tell them so, but a win is a win-don’t forget that. If you played well and lost, understand they’re hurting, be honest, but be positive. If you played poorly and lost, make it clear that is not acceptable, but don’t harangue. Make your point and get out.  Don’t forget they are all you’ve got until next year. Don’t beat them down so that they won’t play for you.
