Connected Educator - Keynote Union School District

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Welcome
  • #3 About me
  • #4 Most importantly, Dad
  • #5 Let’s start with who do you learn from?
  • #6 Who do you learn from?
  • #7 Ecosystem of Learning
  • #8 What does it mean
  • #9 Do this, put you in the center of a piece of paper or use an app like padlet/mindmeister.
  • #10 Connect yourself to the people who you learn from.
  • #11 When I first started teaching this was my ecosystem
  • #12 Common ideas, echo chamber, nothing new/innovative/interesting….safe
  • #13 When we analyze this as a part of a full day workshop
  • #14 analyze all the connections teacher to teach and teacher to digital world we learn a valuable lesson about how strong our networks are.
  • #16 Not Electrophoresis gel. Learning happens in education.
  • #17 Never going to get change at this rate
  • #21 Need a constant drip, an IV bag, something that’s constantly feeding us information, new ideas, innovative, risky, exciting opportunities to change our thinking
  • #22 Being connected means we can learn from anyone, anywhere, at any time.
  • #23 The hard part is plugging in. Be open to thinking differently and being willing to connect.
  • #24 Beware of the Crab Mentality. Those around you will discount, discredit and try to lure you back into the echo chamber. Like crabs in a bucket.
  • #25 You have a chance with being connected. You have a chance to be the outlier. To do things differently, to think differently, to dive into new resources.
  • #26 Studies show, You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Take a moment. Does that scare you?
  • #27 Challenge myself like I challenge you today. Choose to find the best, be a round the best, learn form the best, wherever they are.
  • #28 Because I’m connected I get the opportunity to reach out and ask for help. I ask for help from some of the biggest names in education. Here’s Dan Pink
  • #29 Aaron Sams - inventor of the flipped classroom
  • #30 sorry, but I was trying to communicate my stance, being connected opens doors, influence thinking and changes what you believe is possible.
  • #31 Phase 1 - Where do we start? Consumption
  • #32 Sign up to get email updates
  • #33 Farnam Street - what’s bes that other people have figured out Ed Surge - Edtech newsletter 21st Century - Innovative practices Pink - Business Marshall - Things that were on Twitter a week ago struggle with using email - lost in to do list
  • #34 taking those same sites and subscribing using an RSS feed
  • #35 My favorite, read, share, tag, organize, etc.
  • #36 You can also use FlipBoard. It’s a beautiful way to make websites look like a magazine and make reading enjoyable
  • #37 Podcasts - my new favorite iPhone/iPad
  • #38 Tons of great options - TV/radio show that feeds seamlessly into your mobile device.
  • #39 If you do nothing. Spend 10-20 minutes a week, maybe even a day. Need something to do for lent? Watch one a day. Watching these will change you.
  • #40 After you are done consuming, start an account on a social networking site. Phase 2 - involves Lurking. Lurking gives you time to figure out what to say, when to say it.
  • #41 Phase 3 - After lurking reach out to Connect.
  • #42 Develop a Professional Learning Network
  • #43 3 types of PLNs
  • #44 Use twitter to develop a PLN
  • #45 This is manuel and bob. Both members of the Connected learning team. We were hanging out at a local establishment. They look like they are ignoring each other but actually
  • #46 Bob working on a tweet
  • #47 Participating in #moedchat. Twitter chat where missouri educators get together and each week there is a new topic of conversation and you can add, lurk, or challenge others.
  • #48 #edchat is where all educators go to interact, but you can find a hashtag that fits what you need to flu your IV bag of new tools, resources, contact, etc. In fact hashtags are really taking over.
  • #49 Recently read the book. Gary Vaynerchuck about using social media and his main message is simple.
  • #50 Jab, Jab, Jab - means give, give, give
  • #51 Giving is the key to being connected.
  • #52 Worst thing in the world.
  • #53 Facebook is also used to connect
  • #54 One of my favorite is Edchat.
  • #55 Edchat is a great resource supporting you if you’re on facebook. Problem is with Facebook’s algorithm. That has changed the wa information gets to you, so you may miss a story.
  • #56 Not on twitter of Facebook. Those are a little to “open” for you. Check one of these. • #78 What can you do when you get home, or learn aout later today?
  • #79 Become a master learner
  • #80 If you want some excuses, pick one, google 500 reasons not to change
