2. Genre; Sin City as a Hybrid genre
Sin City is classified as a Hybrid of; -------------------- and -----------------------. By creating Sin City in this post
modern form, it mixes genre conventions to create a new identity and broadening its audience by not
pigeon holding individual genre conventions and excluding viewers who hold an oppositional reading of
them.

5. The first film noir convention I believe proves Sin city is typical to its genre is
the use of a cynical protagonist. The protagonist harbors and projects the
feelings felt by the general population with the looming cold war, post WW2.
These feelings include mistrust, paranoia, and depression. We learn about
these characteristics of the protagonist via the accompanying narration/voice
over or dialogue with other characters. Both examples gives the audience an
insight into their personalities. The use of voice over to do this is another
traditional Film Noir convention.
A specific example of dialogue within the text reflecting the protagonist be
cynical is when Marv responds angrily to his Parole officers comment “Don’t
do that Marv it will be hell” With the sentence, :No, Hell is waking up
everyday not knowing why you are here” It clearly represents how citizens
were feeling in the wake of a possible nuclear annihilation. The cold war was
expected any day and having lived through one war and another one
expected made citizens question the point of existence. This theme was thus
reflected within the Noir cynical protagonists.
