1.Introduction
In Nathan’s My Freshman Year (2005), she was involved in a university community again as a freshman to know the difference between International and American students. She finished her research as a participant observer which means the researcher who is both insider and outsider during the cultural studies. Nathan did everything as an “observation-participant” to study the college life and students. She studied like a real freshman and lived in the dormitory. However, she is a middle-aged woman who has the different experience and generation from freshman. She is not “native”to the culture.
Since I am an international student, I always feel so different when I came to UCSC community. The cultural , life habit, study environment, everything are so fresh and challenging for international students to involve in. When I firstly came in College 9, I felt that everything is so international and corresponds to the theme of College 9 ---“International and Global Issues”. During International orientation, I met and made friends with so many Chinese students. Between our conversation, I found that most of us confused in the new environment. The communication is the most serious problem and it is difficult for us to involve the community. Chinese students lose their confidence easily because the native languages between Chinese and English have totally different background and logic. The general trouble is hard to communicate with others, which makes students become more silent and reticent. People can improve their ability of language by interacting with American students. However, most of Chinese students are willing to stay with Chinese friends. Students are too shy to interact with Americans, so they have no chance to improve our language. Also, some Chinese students don’t care about involving with American community and just hang out with Chinese. Moreover, in the class, Chinese students should have a long time to adapt with the new circumstance because of the language, the culture, the teaching style and the thinking model. According to these findings and feelings, my research question is : “How can Chinese students become more involved in college life?”
2. Research design and methodology
In order to answer the Research Questions, I decide to do the interview with Chinese and American students to collect the specific data. Since I am a Chinese student, I am both an “insider” and an “outsider” during my research. Because as a Chinese student, I can feel the true confused emotion and challenging which most of Chinese students face now. 1.Introduction
In Nathan’s My Freshman Year (2005), she was involved in a
university community again as a freshman to know the
difference between International and American students. She
finished her research as a participant observer which means the
researcher who is both insider and outsider during the cultural
studies. Nathan did everything as an “observation-participant”
to study the college life and students. She studied like a real
freshman and lived in the dormitory. However, she is a middle-
aged woman who has the different experience and generation
from freshman. She is not “native”to the culture.
Since I am an international student, I always feel so different
when I came to UCSC community. The cultural , life habit,
study environment, everything are so fresh and challenging for
international students to involve in. When I firstly came in
College 9, I felt that everything is so international and
corresponds to the theme of College 9 ---“International and
Global Issues”. During International orientation, I met and
made friends with so many Chinese students. Between our
conversation, I found that most of us confused in the new
environment. The communication is the most serious problem
and it is difficult for us to involve the community. Chinese
students lose their confidence easily because the native
languages between Chinese and English have totally different
background and logic. The general trouble is hard to
communicate with others, which makes students become more
silent and reticent. People can improve their ability of language
2. by interacting with American students. However, most of
Chinese students are willing to stay with Chinese friends.
Students are too shy to interact with Americans, so they have no
chance to improve our language. Also, some Chinese students
don’t care about involving with American community and just
hang out with Chinese. Moreover, in the class, Chinese students
should have a long time to adapt with the new circumstance
because of the language, the culture, the teaching style and the
thinking model. According to these findings and feelings, my
research question is : “How can Chinese students become more
involved in college life?”
2. Research design and methodology
In order to answer the Research Questions, I decide to do the
interview with Chinese and American students to collect the
specific data. Since I am a Chinese student, I am both an
“insider” and an “outsider” during my research. Because as a
Chinese student, I can feel the true confused emotion and
challenging which most of Chinese students face now. Also, as
an interviewer, I must interview the Chinese and American at
the same time objectively.
2.1 Research context
UCSC is a public university with more than 10 thousand
students and one of 10 campus in the University of California
system. A campus with world-class facilities and one of the
most visually spectacular settings in higher education, UC Santa
Cruz provides unparalleled opportunities for students to learn
through hands-on experience. Also, UCSC’s reputation for
undergraduate and graduate education ---including the presence
of professors, the scenery and the environment ( In 2015, U.S.
News and World Report ranked UC Santa Cruz as one of the top
best-value universities in the U.S. UC Santa Cruz was the
highest-ranked UC and the second-highest ranked public
university on the list.) ,all things attract students coming here.
Most noteworthy is that UCSC has 10 different college with
3. different core theme. College Nine's theme of International and
Global Perspectives recognizes the importance of cultural
competency in the 21st century. Since this theme seems be
suitable for international students, almost of Chinese students
would like to live there.
The College Nine community offers students a range of
opportunities to explore these issues and to develop skills as
dynamic leaders. Students can interact and communicate with
friends from different countries with various ideas about
International and Global Perspectives.
2.2 Data collection and instruments
I am planning my interview step by step. Firstly, I will prepare
a set of questions to interview with 3 Chinese students. They
are all the guys who I am not really familiar. Because this will
help me do the interviews more objective and I really hope
nothing external factors can affect my research results.
I interviewed them in College 9&10 Dinning Hall because we
all thought this would be a relaxed place to interview with meal.
Ada, who is a Chinese girl having the same Math lecture with
me but we don’t have so many communication after class. I saw
she just hang out with Chinese students, so I think she can be
the extreme object for my interview. This was the first year for
her to study in America. When I asked her why she just
associated with Chinese guys, she said because the
communication problem, she cannot have the real topics with
American students. She was so shy to interact with American
friends and consider them to be just social acquaintances. For
the long time, she was willing to interact with Chinese students
because they didn’t have the communication problem. Although
she still worried about the language problem because she had no
opportunities to communicate with Americans, she had no idea
to change this situation.
Krystal, she is a girl who had high school in America. In her
4. high school, all international students must speak English. She
thought this really helped them improve their language and
created an environment to fit in the American community to
interact with Americans. However, since the university didn’t
have the policy like that in the high school, she lost the habit
which speak English all the time and seldom communicated
with Americans. Fortunately, she laid a solid foundation for the
language in her high school.
Adam, he is a boy who just interact with Americans and seldom
talk with Chinese students. He also had high school in America.
This is also an extreme object during my interview. I was so
surprised when I firstly knew he was a Chinese boy, because
before I knew him, I really thought that he was an American
born Chinese. When I ask him why he was just willing to hang
out with Americans, he said he want to involve in American
community deeply and didn’t just study the external knowledge
here. Instead, he asked me that why most of Chinese students
just interacted with Chinese, what is the meaning of study here
for us? I felt so embarrassed because we are both strange guys
in the eye of each other.
3. Key findings and discussion
Theme: Language & Culture
Firstly, from my 3 interviewees, I found that Ada and Krystal
both have the language problem. Because of the language
problem, they are so shy to interact with American. I am a
freshman who was the first year to come to America as Ada.
Before I came here , my language was weak and I hoped the
environment can help me improve more. However, there are so
many Chinese students here, we didn’t have the chance and
really weren't willing to talk with American because language
problems. We thought that American will laugh at us when we
say wrong words or use incorrect language, but actually they
don’t care about this. Chinese students lose their confidence
easily because the native languages between Chinese and
5. English have totally different background and logic. The
general trouble is hard to communicate with others, which
makes students become more silent and reticent. During my
research, I found that most of Chinese students have the
problem like this.
However, Adam is so different from 2 girls above. He is willing
to involve in American community and want to stay in America.
He appreciates the American culture and of course he can speak
English as a native speaker proficiently. Ada and Krystal cannot
involve in American community also because they are not
interested in American culture. They totally cannot accept the
culture here and just dwell on their “Chinese world”.
Moreover, culture differences maybe the most constant and
scabrous problem for Chinese student. Because China has a long
history, and many cultures have been existed in thousands years
which are being carved in every Chinese heart, students need
more time to adapt the environment and accommodate the
culture. Chinese students have totally different cultural ideas
about study and life. Some students always feel so helpless
when they came here in a short period. Because of this, they are
more willing to interact with Chinese. This will be more
comfortable but actually useless. This situation just causes our
social circle be more narrow and never involves in college life.
4. Conclusion
Language and culture affection are in every corner around study
and life, adapting and integrating into American culture is
important for Chinese students who want to make more friends
and get great success in study.
