The Last Mile Summary <ul><li>The Last Mile program is designed to train selected inmates for eventual employment in a paid internship program within the Silicon Valley technology sector. </li></ul><ul><li>Specific skills related to verbal and written communication, business formation and operation, presentation skills, and computer proficiency will be covered during the program.  </li></ul><ul><li>The program will accept up to 5 men during a 6 month term. </li></ul><ul><li>These participants will be selected after they complete an application form, demonstrate adequate communication skills, complete the TRUST program, and are recommended by a SQ administrator.  </li></ul>

The Evolving Digital Marketplace <ul><li>Provide a background about how the world of communication and expression has changed dramatically over the last 10 years through new technology platforms and social media. </li></ul><ul><li>We will study the ever changing digital landscape and how to utilize technology for personal and professional benefit.   5. 5. Building a Knowledge Base <ul><li>Provide an ongoing curriculum of reading that will provide a solid background for business, personal growth, and business inspiration.   6. 6. Practical Technology Training <ul><li>Provide basic training in the critical software tools (offline and online) that are ubiquitous in the business sector. Orientation related to today’s business environment and expectations. </li></ul><ul><li>Curriculum to include proficiency in: </li></ul><ul><li>Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) </li></ul><ul><li>Writing fundamentals </li></ul><ul><li>Design </li></ul>

Building an Idea & Guest Advisers <ul><li>The goal is to provide the opportunity for each participant to formulate an idea and prepare a presentation to effectively communicate their idea to a prospective business partner. </li></ul><ul><li>Learning how to transform an idea into a business plan and presentation. </li></ul><ul><li>This develops organization, strategic thinking, verbal and written communication skills. </li></ul><ul><li>Participants to present their business at the end of the term to a selected group of domain experts. </li></ul><ul><li>Invited advisors with specific domain expertise to present to the group with informative and inspirational information.  </li></ul>
  8. 8. Video Documentation <ul><li>The plan includes video documentation of selected sessions of The Last Mile program. The video documentation is a critical component of the program for the following : </li></ul><ul><li>Create a video library to be utilized for future sessions of the Last Mile program within San Quentin </li></ul><ul><li>Use presentation recording to help participants improve their presentation skills </li></ul><ul><li>Provide content from the video library for other institutions as a component of replicating The Last Mile program </li></ul><ul><li>Create video resumes for the individuals within the Last Mile program that can be used to help secure post release positions </li></ul><ul><li>Utilize selected content to create video vignettes to help reinforce the positive aspects of the program </li></ul>
  9. 9. Cooperative Programs <ul><li>The Last Mile program will work in coordination with existing programs </li></ul><ul><li>that provide complimentary training. We have met with the principals of these programs, and discussions will continue regarding how we can work together </li></ul><ul><li>MOMAS financial literacy course at San Quentin called “Members of Modern American Society” (MOMAS). The course aims to prepare inmates for modern society and reduce recidivism by teaching skills they will need to integrate into the formal economy. It was conceived </li></ul>

Post Release Goals <ul><li>Paid internship - Selected graduates to be placed in an entry level position, leveraging the skills acquired through TLM training </li></ul><ul><li>Continued training and mentoring - Sessions will be conducted with placed graduates to assist in additional training and acclimation </li></ul><ul><li>Performance monitoring - Job performance will be monitored through regular communication with employers. </li></ul><ul><li>Reciprocity - All released and currently incarcerated TLM graduates will pledge to assist future graduates in coordination with TLM </li></ul>
