History
South Suburban College is the latest incarnation of a school that has had several different
names and locations. In the beginning, the school was founded in 1927 as Thornton Junior
College. Originally, the college was an extension of the Thornton Township High School,
although it later expanded to serve graduates from several area high schools. In 1969, the
college changed its name to Thornton Junior College in order to prepare itself to serve a wider
variety of students. Shortly after receiving its new moniker, the college switched to a new main
campus in 1972. This campus was located in South Holland and is still the primary site for the
school. In 1988, the Board of Trustees chose to once again update the name of the college in
order to better reflect its current geographic location. Consequently, the college was renamed
South Suburban College.

Reviews
According to students, South Suburban College is an enjoyable place to take your general
education classes in preparation for a Bachelor’s degree. However, many students caution that it
is mostly good for prerequisites, so it is wise to have a plan for transferring to a different college
as soon as possible. However, for adult education students, there are plenty of interesting
options that allow adults to continue learning throughout their lives.
