Rome was founded in 753 BC and began as a democracy governed by senators. Julius Caesar became dictator but was later murdered, allowing Augustus to take over as the first emperor. The Roman Empire lasted from 193 AD to 285 AD and then was divided into Western and Eastern sections that ended around 476 AD and 1453 AD respectively.
