Richard dyer’s star theory
1. Richard dyer’s star theory
The idea that icons and celebs are constructed by institutions for financial gain
and are built to target a specific audience or a group of people.
It can be broken down into segments:
Audience and institutions
Constructions
Hegemony (cultural beliefs)
Stars are made to make money for that purpose alone. The institution then
models the stars image around the target audience
The star is built for an audience, not an actual person.
It is built specifically with someone signature to them that differentiates them
from other stars, eg. Lady gaga’s fashion
We relate to stars because they have a feature that we desire. This develops
admiration and idolisation
People try to replicate.
