3. Executive Order Protects LGBT
Employees of Federal Contractors
A recently signed executive order aims to protect employees who are
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) from workplace
discrimination in agencies with federal contracts. Signed by President
Obama in July 2014, the executive order will affect around 24,000 federal
contracting companies and will provide protections to approximately 14
million workers who did not previously have safeguards from existing state
or employer regulations. The executive order will most likely go into effect in
early 2015 and will be enforced by the U.S. Department of Labor. Prior to
last month, President Obama delayed signing an executive anti-discrimination
order in the hope that Congress would pass legislation
prohibiting LGBT discrimination on a national level.
