Who is a Chaplain?
Isaiah 66:13A, As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you:
Now that we have an idea of what a Chaplain is, we need to know who a Chaplain is. We
have included some Bible verses to show how God feels about the Chaplaincy.
In our case a Chaplain is someone that is called by God to serve. I say that because we
are studying to become Christian Chaplains. Our interest here at the NACM is to produce
Chaplains with a strong Christian foundation. We can then minister to people of other faiths in
accordance with God’s will.

Who is a Chaplain? (cont.)
• Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists;
and some, pastors and teachers;
• II Timothy 2:21 If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for
noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
A Chaplain is called by God to minister to people with many different religious beliefs.
A Chaplain must show respect for these other religious beliefs while maintaining their own
Christian values. God calls the chaplain to minister in unique settings. "Unique" means non-church
settings and non-church people. In ancient times as well as today, the Chaplain is present on the
battle field.

• Deuteronomy 20:2-4, "And it shall be when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the
priest shall approach and speak unto the people."
A Chaplain is male or female, a born-again, baptized believer in Christ, an active
member of a local Church, a person of proven integrity and trustworthiness and a person who
knows and understands who they are.
A Chaplain must be able to look at themselves with personal introspection:
• Do I really know who I am?
• Am I who I think I am? Is who I am, what I am?

• Gal 6:1-10 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such
an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye
one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be
something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. But let every man prove his own
work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every
man shall bear his own burden. Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him
that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a
man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap
corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let
us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have
therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the
household of faith.

Who is a Chaplain? (cont.)
A Chaplain is a happy person. A chaplain, who accepts themselves and loves themselves, accepts others
and expresses genuine love to them.
• Psalms 112:1 Praise the Lord. Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who find great
delight in his commands.
• Matthew. 22:39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.
• 1st Peter 4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of
sins.
Chaplains are personal soul-winners. A chaplain carries a small Bible and soul-winning
tracts with them to always be ready to share a witness when God opens the door.

• 1st Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give the
reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
Chaplains live exemplary lives. A Chaplain "walks the walk" and "talks the talk". A
Chaplain is always in the spotlight. People love to watch clergymen fail. It is the devil at work.
Chaplains train to serve effectively and work to gain the respect of others. A chaplain
ministers more effectively when trained in the chaplaincy specialty.
• 2nd Thessalonians 1:11, With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may
count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose
of yours and every act prompted by your faith.

Who is a Chaplain? (cont.)
Chaplains develop good listening skills. A chaplain always listens more than they talk.
The successful Chaplain seeks to understand people through their words, facial expressions and
body language.
• Pro 18:13 ESV If one gives an answer before he hears; it is his folly and shame.
A Chaplain is a true hero, whatever the culture, background, gender, race or ethnic
origins. Differences are not obstacles for a Chaplain; they are enhancements to the challenges of
service. And a Chaplain’s heart is a pure humanitarian heart that beats for the honor and
privilege of service.
• 2nd Timothy 2:15 says, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a
workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of
truth."
