SNAKE BITE FOR FARMERS IN SRI LANKA AND AWARENESS
 Identify the occasions where the snake bite occur

Sri Lanka, closed to 37,000 snake bite cases are report annually to hospitals of
which about 100 cases will result in the death of the Victim
Most of these death occur ibn rural areas where the patients are go to the hospitals at
a very late stage due to the lack of transportation facilities.
Many people fear snake because they believe that all snake are venomous and are
seeking to kill them

There are three groups according to venomous
Cobra ( Naja Naja)
Common ( Indian ) Krait
(Bungarus caeruleus)
Celoyn ( Sri Lanka) Kreit
(Bungarus ceylonicus)
Russells’s viper ( daboia russelii)
Saw scaled viper (Echis carnatus)
Highly venomous

Can you identify venomous snakes?
Cobra
Size: 25 cm- 140 cm
Special Features
Upper side of the body is light brown or Gray.
There are yellow or white strips at intervals.
It has a hood witch can be expanded.
There are two black spots under side of the head
Habitant
During the day it look for food while the night
time hide in termite hills , Rat holes and files of
fired wood

Indian Karit
Size: 25 cm- 140 cm
Special Features
Highly poisonous species of Snake. Upper side of
the body is blackfish brown. Body is shiny. It
even prays on other non-poisonous snakes
Habitant
Burring the night look for food and during day
hide under decaying leaves, loose soil, or dry
grass. Can be found in water bodies.

Sri Lankan Krait
Size: 100- 110 cm
Special Features
Highly poisonous species of Snake. Body is black
purple. It has ring like white band across the
body
Habitant
Looks for pray in night. In day times hide under
rotting leaves , piles of stone. When frightened
coils up and hide its head in the coil.

Russell viper
Size: 120-130 cm
Special Features
Upper side of the body is reddish brown the
underside is yellowish white. In the center of the
body and on either side there are three rows of
black’s dots.
Habitant
Most activities in the night. It hisses as a warning
sign before attacking.

Saw scaled Viper
Size: 120-130 cm
Special Features
Special features: has a white bird’s foot shaped
marked on the head upper side of the body is
grayish brown. It has diamond shaped marks it’s
body.
Habitant
Nocturnal during day hides under loose soil,
drying leaves or shrubs. It jumps forward when
attacking prey and recoil to normal position. .

it is getting dark
2. While staying at Chena huts to protect the cultivations from
wild animals at night
3. While harvesting
4. When working along grassy bulk
5. When clearing the lands for Chena cultivation
6. While leading the cow in to the dairy farming

To
identify a
snake
bite,
consider
the
following
general
symptoms
Two puncture wounds
Swelling and redness around the wounds
Pain at the bite place
Difficulty breathing
Vomiting and nausea
Blurred vision
Sweating and salivating
Numbness in the face and limbs

First aid
for
snake
bite
1. Reassure the patient
2. Keep the bitten part immobilized
3. Washed the bitten area with soap and water
4. Remove all ring bracelets from the bitten part of the body
5. Identify the snake if possible
6. Get medical help as quick as possible

Don’t
do
1. Don’t suck at the bitten area
2. Don’t apply ice pack to the bitten area
3. Don’t use tight bands or tourniquet
4. Don’t make any cut, scratch or incision
5. Don’t give aspirin or alcohol
6. Don’t panic

How

hospital
Quickly but safety and comfortably with Minimal movement
avoid systematic absorption
