1. polyculture farming introduction in
agriculture as the main source!
Food globalization – its impact to
agricultural lands and our future
life
Ilze Laukaleja, Latvia University of
Agriculture, Latvia
2. Today's world is fast developing, technologies are more and more
modernizing and globalizing. Food has become a commodity and its
main function, feeding us, has been pushed to the background.
We know population is strongly growing .
But do we think about future ?
Acording to FAO in 2030 population will reach 8,5 billion people.
Problem is – agricultural lands are decreasing.
Food globalization is one of most important
problem and if we don’t change ir it could be 21.
century disaster!
3. • In the world live about
7,005,657,611 people;
• Developed countries are
based on monoculture
farms, whose numbers
increases;
• Countries that only
imported food are
depending on other
countries – exporters;
• Human growth are
inversely proportional to
the agricultural lands;
• Increase extremes -
overweight and hunger
are increasing
• «Food miles» volume of
produce are increasing
4. Non-traditional Monoculture
Food Export-
food production farming
import volume
increase domination in
EU and U.S.
Agricultural
land
decrease
Population Increase extremes -
growth overweight and
hunger
5. My ideas for improving the situation
Think globally, but act locally!
Policultural farming and urban agriculture
introduction in your country
Popularize agri-tourims – if people could see how
food production works
Modernizise traditional cuisine, not changing its
real nutritional value!
6. • Different food production in farm could upgrade economy,
because one type of farming could countervail other farming
crisis and reverse
Policultural
farming • "food miles" volume decrease improve air composition
• people could see how food production works
Popularizing agri- • would be more interested to local food
tourism
• more children choose healthier food
Modernizise • preserve traditions and the true meaning of food
traditional cuisine
7. Positive aspect
• Eat food that is locally produced, are healthier, because people have to eat on
its own climate zone
• We would save agricultural lands and reduce gas emissions
• Save long time eating traditions form disappearing
• Could better help other countries, who can’t produce food of geographical
reasons
8. «Not everything that is faced can be
changed, but nothing can be changed
until it is faced»
