A 67 year old man was referred to
the eCare community eye clinic by
his optometrist after he had noted a
reduction in the acuity in his right
eye over the preceding months.
He was known to be a high myope (right eye: -
11.00/-1.25x130; left eye -7.50/-1.00x30) but
had no other previous ophthalmic or family
ophthalmic history.
When seen in clinic, the acuity in his right eye was 6/24 best
corrected, reading N12 best, while his left eye saw 6/9+ best
corrected, reading N5. His right eye acuity had been recorded as
6/9 two years ago. His anterior segments were unremarkable and
intraocular pressure normal (16 right and left). Examination of the
fundus after dilation showed the left to have a normal, myopic
fundus. The appearance of the right fundus is shown below:
At this point, what should be the major
differential diagnoses for this patient?
