7. 18 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2
There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native
of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had
ordered all Jews to leave Rome.
8. Paul went to see them, 3
and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked
with them.
9. 4
Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.
10. 5
When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching,
testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.
11. 6
But when they opposed Paul and became abusive, he shook out his clothes in protest and said
to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the
Gentiles.”
12. 7
Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of
God.
13. 8
Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the
Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.
14. 9
One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be
silent. 10
For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many
people in this city.”
16. 12
While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and
brought him to the place of judgment. 13
“This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to
worship God in ways contrary to the law.”
17. 14
Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some
misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. 15
But since it involves questions
about words and names and your own law—settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.”
18. 16
So he drove them off. 17
Then the crowd there turned on Sosthenes the synagogue leader and
beat him in front of the proconsul; and Gallio showed no concern whatever.
19. 19
They arrived at Ephesus, where Paul left Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the
synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.

It is normal to feel discouraged/fear.
We have the ability to persevere. Ask
the Holy Spirit!
Wait for the next opportunity. (can be
next door, near.)

PRAYER! Holy Spirit’s guidance.
18 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.
Acts 17 – In Thessalonica
Thessalonica – preached, many believed, riot, looked for them but not found
Berea – preached in synagogue on Sabbath, Bereans received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true; many believed, another mob so Paul left, but Silas and Timothy stayed > to follow
Athens – full of idols, he preached again, met extreme groups of people:
Epicureans - Devoted to the pursuit of sensual pleasure, especially to the enjoyment of good food and comfort.)
Stoics - a person who can endure pain or hardship without showing their feelings or complaining.
He reasoned to them that God is not built by human hands. Many believed and wanted to know more about Him.
Acts 18 – Left Athens and went to Corinth
How does Corinth look like?
Centre for trade and business – like Singapore
Centre for entertainment and having fun of all sorts - Olden times Las Vegas
So much promiscuity, worship of goddess Venus/Aphrodite – high class prostitution
Whatever earned is for the temple.
Modern day Corinth in Greece
Destroyed by wars and diseases and earthquakes
Destroyed and rebuilt, destroyed and rebuilt.
LET’S ALL READ TOGETHER:
18 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome.
They were from Pontus, Rome, but because the Roman Emperor Claudius ordered that all Jews leave Rome. Now they went to Corinth for business.
Paul went to see them, 3 and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them.
Worked with them as tentmaker – shows the profession of Paul.
4 Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.
As expected like where he’d been, he did what he’s used to do – preaching and convincing people that Jesus is Christ.
He did multitask – work for God at the same time on Sabbath days,
5 When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.
According to the commentaries, he did his preaching, but not as zealously as when he got reunited with Timothy and Silas.
We can be encouraged even by just he mere presence of brothers and sisters.
6 But when they opposed Paul and became abusive, he shook out his clothes in protest and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”
Even if he continued preaching to the Jews, he saw them abusive again as in other places.
He kind of gave up on them for a while. – went to the Gentiles
7 Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God.
You don’t have to go far.
He went to the next opportunity which is just next door – there’s a believer next door.
8 Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.
His labour was not in vain – entire household and other Corinthians believed and were baptized!
9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. 10 For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.”
Yes there was a great harvest that happened, but then maybe his being human also propped up. He had a lot of persecution, he had his fill, He also feared for his life, he felt like giving up, he felt like just be silent to avoid trouble, and he felt that there will be none or only a few people to believed. We have not seen yet how he dealt with his inner condition.
But God reassured him!! Via dream, a vision – God speaks to us in many ways
11 So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.
What did you think did Paul do?
He obeyed. He kept on speaking, he was not afraid, he did not become silent, he trusted God is with him, he is assured that no one will hurt him, he anticipated that there will be a great harvest.
Was God’s promises true? Let’s take a look?
12 While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment. 13 “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”
Again! Dejavu! Another riot and persecution.
Attack was real!
A chance to prove what God has spoken to him.
14 Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. 15 But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law—settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.”
How did Paul react to the situation? God got him someone to defend him on his behalf.
He was about to defend himself, but the leader himself almost like spoke on his behalf. God’s word is true that no one is going to attack him.
16 So he drove them off. 17 Then the crowd there turned on Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the proconsul; and Gallio showed no concern whatever.
Someone was beaten instead – Sosthenes, the leader of syngogue - why beat their own? - he presented the case to Gallio, pent up rage, dragged Paul, sosthenes present case, put their disappointment on him. mattters on their hands - they did not get what they wanted.
Sosthenes – safe in strength!
Do you know what happened to Sosthenes? – Commentaries say that this is the same person in 1 Cor 1
1 Cor 1 - letter of Paul, with him in Ephesus is Sosthenes (after the beating, trusted Messiah Jesus)
1 Corinthians 1New International Version (NIV)
1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:
3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
19 They arrived at Ephesus, where Paul left Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to spend more time with them, he declined. 21 But as he left, he promised, “I will come back if it is God’s will.” Then he set sail from Ephesus. 22 When he landed at Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch.
2. Corinth - centre for trade, arts, finance, entertainment - name it, they've got it, admin, commerce of Roman world, travel, to practice hoardom, games (greek goddes), roughest places to live, fortitude and courage, business
3., worship of Aphrodite/Venus , lots of temples, Aphrodite
Used his profession as a means to evangelise
He had his fill from all his journeys, there’s always this mob of people who keep opposing. Not again in Corinth!
We can be encouraged even by just he mere presence of brothers and sisters.
He had his fill from all his journeys, there’s always this mob of people who keep opposing. Not again in Corinth!
expect darker times in gospel ministry - discouragement comes with the territory, influenced by loneliness, lack of information, anxiety, it will weight down, dont be surprised.
shook garment - separate, i dont even want ur dust on me, God's judgment is on Jews at Corinth, Paul is clean/innocent, paul told them everything they needed to know - Jews in corinth solely responsible for their own destruction.
. every small door closing - look to God redirecting you to another door
Despite the number of souls saved, what can we infer from this words of God about the condition of Paul?
He is afraid.
He wants to stop speaking.
He feels alone.
He is afraid for his life.
He feels his labor is in vain.
Reassurance from above
Plenty of harvest here
Lots and lots of perseverance – bear fruit
You didn’t even have to defend yourself – saving grace!
do not be afraid any longer - fear, silent Christian in Corinth, fear dampens our gospel preaching than anything else - so that they can believe in gospel, he knows who is saved in advance, pre-determined who believes, submit your logic to Jesus - God is sovereign in salvation - no need to plead for people to believe
Fear is magnetic, it attracts. You are going to attract that which you are fearful of. If you are afraid that people will hurt you, that you will not be able to move on in life, that you will not have enough, you will attract these things. But if You have faithful, God is faithful to uphold us in these situations.

He stayed for a year and a half continue the work.
Gallio - The LORD directs the heart of a man like a watercourse
