Charles Darwin was an English naturalist born in 1809 who developed the theory of evolution by natural selection. He is most famous for his ideas about evolution being driven by natural selection and survival of the fittest. During a five year voyage around the world on HMS Beagle, Darwin made many observations of nature and collected specimens that helped him develop his theory of evolution. He published several influential works including On the Origin of Species in 1859. Darwin died in 1882, but his revolutionary ideas fundamentally changed scientific and religious thought.
