Mr. Garcia attended the Limacon 2000 mathematics conference which covered topics in teaching mathematics from K-College. He observed three sessions - the first about unifying angle theorems and problem solving techniques by Richard Kalman; the second demonstrated the use of graphing calculators in Regents mathematics instruction by Judi Gleicher; the third about a new AP exam preparation CDROM by Gloria Dion. Mr. Garcia recommends the school look into the MOEMS program discussed in the first session, purchasing a class set of TI-92 calculators for use in teaching Regents math, and incorporating the AP exam preparation CDROM into the math computer lab.

Background:
Every year in March, the Long Island Math Conference is held at
SUNY Old Westbury. LIMACON XIV attracted presenters and teachers from
all over the globe. The conference covers topics in teaching mathematics and
computer science from K-College.
Observations:
My first session was presented by Richard Kalman. Mr. Kalman
taught Sequential Math for several years before retiring last year from
Syosset High School. He is the current director of MOEMS (Mathematical
Olypiads for Elementary and Middle Schools). His presentation was about
Unifying the Angle Theorems. In the course of his discussion, he also spoke
about MOEMS and problem solving techniques.
The second session was presented by Judi Gleicher of Huntington
Schools. Her discussion, Easy as I, II, III demonstrated the use of Graphing
Calculators (TI-83/89) in Regents mathematics instruction.
In my last session, Gloria Dion spoke about the new APCD from ETS.
This interative CDROM will help prepare AB Calculus students for the AP
exam.
Recommendations:
The MOEMS program sounded very interesting. Please find attached
a flyer for use in Elementary or Middle School mathematics curricula.
A class set of TI-92s would be useful for teaching Regents mathematics
with a Graphing Calculator, Computer Algebra System and Geometer Sketch
Pad.
The APCD should be incorporated into the math computer lab in room
429 for use by our AB Calculus students. Please find attached an order form
for APCD.
