First Face Transplantation of Turkey

AkdenizUniversityHospital -21January 2012.
The 19-year-old marble worker Uğur Acar's face was badly burnt by
a toppled oven at home when he was a 40-day-old baby.
He had full-face transplant from 39 years old donor Ahmet KAYA
who had committed suicide by jumping on the train tracks,after 13
days of vegetative state his family decided to donate his organs.
Except the face and extremities(2 arms and right leg) was taken from
donor and transported to the Akdeniz University Hospital from Usak
State Hospital.

Post-operative Edema can be seen
on patient face.And the patient
morally in a good condition that
reported by nurses he is
contacting,joking and watching
DVD’s(especially old funny films to
keep his moral level high).
He is not going out from bed even
for the toilet.And the mirrors in the
room was removed to prevent
patient to have post operative
pyscological trauma.

2. 04.02.2012 :
After 13 days fluid based feeding he had his first solid food as “Boiled chicken , macoroni ,
bread and stewed apples.”

13.01.2012 :
First hairs(beard) on the patient face shaved(23 days later after operation) Captured by

To have quick heeling period on his face patient must be shaved fully.At the same time patient will see
his new face in front of the mirror for first time after transplantation.

3. 21.02.2012 :

4. 01.05.2012 :
Uğur celebrating his 100th day after operation with his friends. “He is emotionally and
physically in a good condition” sad his friends.
15.08.2012 :
After 4 month he is having mimical movements on his face :

5. 07.11.2012 : Ugur is gettingbetter after 10 months ofoperation, he is having small Aesthetic
operationsfor the scars and Rhinoplasty.
22.01.2014 :
Almost 2 Years passed after the operation and 1 week before his birthday Ugur had Botox
application on his face :

Its possible to see there is still absent facial movements.And he is still having Aesthetic
operations previous one was for forehead lines which provided corresponding visual age with

6. 03.05.2014 :
2 Years 2 Months Later Ugur had his first normal values on blood test he is now like normal
healthy individual.
