This new policy will be placed into effect
December of 2016 in an effort to keep
crew members and the citizens we serve
SAFE during operations of a 911 response.

A weapon is defined as any device that
can be used to inflict great bodily harm.
This can include
•Sharp edged instrument
•Billie
•Metallic Knuckles
•Tear Gas
•Taser
•Firearm
•Or Other Deadly Weapon

In the event that this policy is utilized an
Incident Report will be completed with the
required documentation items listed under
subsection II. Guidelines of 314.00
Information concerning firearm ownership
Will Not Be Entered Into Patient’s Health
Record.

ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities
EMS personnel should Not attempt to
determine if a patient is “authorized” to
carry a concealed weapon.
EMS personnel should Not attempt to unload
or render a weapon “safe” .
These functions should be conducted by
trained Law Enforcement personnel

EMS Personnel shall have the authority to
inquire about the presence of a firearm, if
they in good faith believe it is necessary to
the treatment of a patient during the course
and scope of a medical emergency or that
the presence or possession of a firearm pose
imminent danger or threat to patient or
others.

If the presence or possession of a weapon
could impact the care you deliver or pose a
threat to you or others, you have the right
to ask.
If the Answer is yes; actions should be as
followed…

Conscious Alert and OrientedConscious Alert and Oriented
Ask the patient or family member to secure
weapon if can be performed safely.
If the patient is unwilling to surrender the
weapon, notify law enforcement and explain to
patient that they cannot be transported in the
ambulance with a weapon. This constitutes a
refusal of services and document appropriately.

Impaired or Obtunded PatientImpaired or Obtunded Patient
Contact Law Enforcement to secure the weapon.
Have a family member secure the weapon if it can be
performed safely.
If Law Enforcement or Security secures a weapon
notify patient or family, who or where the weapon can
be retrieved from upon discharge of the hospital.

While Enroute…While Enroute…
If a weapon is discovered enroute to a
receiving facility it is important that weapon
is secured in a locking cabinet of the
ambulance like the narcotics safe and the
receiving facility should be notified via radio
for the need for security to meet the
ambulance outside to secure said weapon.

Do Not become involved in any use of force
in an attempt to remove a weapon. Contact
Law Enforcement immediately if scene is or
becomes unsafe seek egress and a safe
location until Law Enforcement ensures that
the scene is safe.
