2. INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN (APPRENTICE) | JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN
Performed a variety of electrical duties during new construction of 2 Steam Assisted Gravity
Drainage (SAGD) oil plants. Worked 2 years at Foster Creek SAGD Phase F plant as a
Journeyman Electrician. Upon on-budget, on-time project completion, performed another
year at Christina Lake SAGD Phase F plant, accruing new duties as an Instrumentation
Technician and again contributing to on-time, on-budget project completion. Both
projects were performed for same client, Cenovus Energy. Each busy site had multiple concurrent
contractors (construction, welders, concrete workers, pipefitters, etc.) making coordination and adherence
to safety of utmost concern, a topic addressed through morning safety meetings and a toolbox safety
meeting at each new job. Studon Electric alone had approximately 100 staff members onsite, including 35
journeyman electricians. Left in good standing to pursue next phase of instrumentation apprenticeship.
Instrumentation Technician (2015–2016):
On second Cenovus project, Christina Lake, moved into on-the-job instrumentation duties as part of
formal apprenticeship. Fabricated metal, installed myriad instruments (ait, pit, pdit, fit, tit, te, fe, pg),
investigated/researched calibration and installation of instruments in manuals, stroked/maintained valves,
used air compressors, calibrated in-field instruments using external power source, and used Fluke/HART
meters during instrument calibrations.
• Excelled at bending stainless steel instrumentation tubing, drawing on strong
abstract thinking/spatial visualization skills as well as former commercial experience bending
Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT).
• Typically worked alone onsite, demonstrating self-direction and efficiency against
assigned daily goals.
• Regularly deployed as Journeyman Electrician as well during this period, a
flexible staffing approach that allowed management to meet peak project demands by capitalizing on
diversified skill set.
Journeyman Electrician (2013–2015):
Set up ground and wire generators for temporary power; wired temporary service for ATCO/lunch
trailers/offices; disassembled and relocated temporary power as project entered new phases; ran ladder
tray and fast tray; installed grounding rods and grounding system; pulled regular and high voltage cable;
installed equipment (lights, receptacles, ESD, heaters, emergency beacons); installed and terminated JB,
PLC, CDP I/O cabinets, distribution panels and transformers; installed firestop/fire barriers; installed
aluminum ridged pipe; terminated motors; installed exhaust fans and heaters; and performed metal
fabrication (cutting, drilling, bolting together, rework for welders).
• Hand-selected to perform all temporary power work at Foster Creek project based
on strong background in commercial work, experience working at heights and in restricted spaces,
and expertise in bending EMT.
• Selectedto work on a small quality assurance team assigned to master delinquency
list at end of Foster Creek project, in recognition of unusually proficient troubleshooting skills.
• Developedreputation as an excellent trainer while overseeing career development
of 13 apprentices.
• Offered lockout authority by management—a highly responsible duty—during
project tenure, but declined to pursue formal apprenticeship in instrumentation.
