Critical Analysis One: Achieving a Readable Style
Technical reports are an extremely difficult way to communicate to a reader. The author
must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the subjects, display technical information that some
may find hard to understand, and find a way to keep the attention of the audience. Both authors
had their own unique style of writing their reports. Though loaded with good information, I feel
as though one had a more effective way of connecting with the reader. Both demonstrated the
advancing technology in the virtual publishing world, and proved by technical reason the
supporting evidence needed for the reader to comprehend.
After reading both technical reports, I feel as though Jeffery Terrace has a more clear and
concise writing style. His way of displaying the knowledge of the virtual 3-D world, was riveting
and inviting. It is vital to support the technical information with passion and personal
connections. This makes for an easier read, and demonstrates a strong communicator. Daniel
Lynch was also a strong communicator. His way of using visual aids (pictures) was a strong way
to allow readers to "see what he sees."
Daniel Lynch certainly demonstrated a stronger design principle. As stated, visual aid
was used to clearly demonstrate and back up his report. As a reader this was helpful. Chapter 3.2
(pg. 14) is an example of how the picture was able to show the history of the machine used i the
2. early 1900's for printing. The use of diagrams and mathematical equations helps the reader
understand logic in a clear and concise manner. These aids along with the information on the
foundation and future of publishing, lead to a better designprinciple than Jeffery Terrance.
The better technical writer was in my opinion was Jeffery Terrace. I feel as though his report on
the 3D virtual world and it's future was a more technical topic in itself. There was more support for his
information in technical terms. Terrace explained in overviews of the platforms used to describe the met
averse. This is important in a technical report, as the reader is able to identify a clear plan of action for the
future. He also describes techniques and applications used for the met averse.
All in all, the strongest report was by Terrace. It was easier to understand and comprehend the
information. Lynch was strong with using more visual aid in the report, but ultimately the report is to
present the technical information needed for the reader to grasp concepts, ideas, and future analysis. It is
interesting to read a technical report to find the difficulties the writers may experience when conveying
their research. Communicating to the reader a set plan and understanding of the material is the ideal way
to convey the technicalities of the topic and information.
