Open Office is a freely distributed office suite that includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, drawing tool, chart creator, and math program. It originated from AT&T Unix and structured programming languages and was later developed as open source software by Sun Microsystems, who was later acquired by Oracle. The word processor, called Writer, functions similar to Microsoft Word while the spreadsheet program, CALC, works like Excel by allowing users to work with 2D tables, functions, formatting, and hiding columns.
