The Three As and Effective preparation and Tools for Child Care
Patterns of Attachment
1. Please watch the following video: Responsive Caregiving
Early Essentials Webisode 8: Responsive Interactions | ECLKC (hhs.gov)
https://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/video/early-essentials-webisode-8-responsive-interactions
2. Explain in writing:
a.Why responsive caregiving is so important to the development of a secure
attachment?which includes a poster and a written section
b.How you would use the "Three As" to assist you with addressing the needs for care and
education of the infants/toddlers in your classroom.
Use the textbook and the videos to help guide your thinking
B.
Building Relationships and Guiding Behaviours
Guidance strategy
Which guidance strategy do you feel most comfortable using with infants and toddlers?
Why?
Which strategy are you less comfortable using? Why? You will probably find the need to use
that strategy with some children, so how will you learn to use it given your feelings towards
it?
Trying it out:
Interact with a child that you know well. Try out one new guidance strategy and explain:
How you felt doing it, how the child responded, and how others around you responded.
How might your past interactions with this child have influenced the effectiveness of this
strategy?
How, then, should teachers think about success when trying a new strategy?

Developmentally Appropriate Content& Designing the Curriculum
a. Your views on Curriculum
Read the chapter on Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum and respond to the following
question:
How does this information presented in the chapter regarding the Reggio Emilia
2. perspective contradict or add to your existing viewpoints about curriculum planning?
b. Loose parts
Infants and toddlers are natural scientists with an intrinsic drive to investigate and master
their world. When loose parts are introduced to infants and toddlers, rich, magnificent
explorations transpire. Infants and toddlers are researchers who are fascinated by the
properties of objects and how things work.
1. Read the article: Loose Parts: Part 1, Introduction to Loose parts for Infants and Toddlers
2. From the article, review the section on "Considerations for Presenting Loose Parts and
use the guidelines to create a provocation for infants/toddlers.
3. Photograph your provocation and respond to the following questions.
How were the guidelines considered in have provocations?
Why are loose parts beneficial for infants/toddlers learning?
What safety guidelines did you consider when using the loose parts to create your
provocation?
4. Upload your photos and written responses
D.
The Child from Birth to 12 Months
1. Pretend that you have been invited to participate in a debate about:
Do security objects such as blankets or toys belong in child care programs?
2. In Preparation for the debate:
Think about: How do you feel about children having attachment to objects? How does your
beliefs align with the research presented in the chapter and the videos?
Choose a side that you would like to debate: Either for or against the use of security objects
and:
Each learner will provide an opening statement and justification for your position . Limit
this to 300 hundresd words .
Cite quotes from your textbook and other sources and provide examples from your
experiences.
Are there any developmental theories that you could include to support your points

Documentation Panel &Exploring the Natural World
1. Documentation Panel
Exploring the Natural World with Infants and Toddlers
Read the article: Exploring the Natural World with Infants and Toddlers in an Urban Setting
post ONE reaction to the article
Reflect on the children whom you have observed, and share 2 examples of how you could
continue to nurture their interest in the natural world? That means how would you extend
their play in the natural world?
Remember that your answer should reflect the needs and interest of the children whom you
had observed ?
F.
Instructions
Revisit your observation notes from the video with Sara and Samantha.
3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIXbHFn6Sfw
In your interpretation narrative, you can include perspectives from:
holistic play-based goals descriptors
naming Schemas:
Identifying & naming dispositions
From the child perspective
Learning & Developmental domains
From the teacher perspective - curious about, wondering, surprised ?
Based on your interpretation- What might be the children's interest?
NOTE: In reality an educator might need to complete more than one observation and
interpretation before he/she can pinpoint a child's interest. However, one observation and
interpretation can also lay the foundation for further investigation.
