2.1.3 Machining Challenges with New Materials
In the recent past, new materials for manufacturing landing gear is increasingly being used. It includes polymer
matrix composites and titanium and titanium matrix composites. The conventional materials used in the
manufacturing of landing gear systems such as 300M and 4340 stainless steel are being replaced by AerMet100
and AF1410 alloys. Similarly, for new generation wide-body aircraft titanium alloys such as Ti 10-2-3 (Ti 10V 2Fe

because of its high performance in comparison with stainless steel.
Machining is a process of cutting the raw material in a desired shape and size and hence, with the introduction of
new materials poses new machining challenges. For instance, titanium alloys are also termed as difficult-to-machine
materials. Machining titanium alloys at high temperature and strain exhibits deformation and is a complex process

Landing gear systems are of different types and are used according to the type of aircraft. Earlier skids were used
in an aircraft as a landing gear. However, with the advancement in technology, wheels were attached to the skids
and different arrangements (tail wheel type, tricycle type and tandem type landing gear system) have been used
