Detecting advanced email attacks at scale is a challenging ML problem, particularly due to the rarity of attacks, adversarial nature of the problem, and scale of data. In order to move quickly and adapt to the newest threat we needed to build a Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery pipeline for the entire ML detection stack. Our goal is to enable detection engineers and data scientists to make changes to any part of the stack including joined datasets for hydration, feature extraction code, detection logic, and develop/train ML models. In this talk, we discuss why we decided to build this pipeline, how it is used to accelerate development and ensure quality, and dive into the nitty-gritty details of building such a system on top of an Apache Spark + Databricks stack.

Fluvius is the network operator for electricity and gas in Flanders, Belgium. Their goal is to modernize the way people look at energy consumption using a digital meter that captures consumption and injection data from any electrical installation in Flanders ranging from households to large companies. After full roll-out there will be roughly 7 million digital meters active in Flanders collecting up to terabytes of data per day. Combine this with regulation that Fluvius has to maintain a record of these reading for at least 3 years, we are talking petabyte scale. delaware BeLux was assigned by Fluvius to setup a modern data platform and did so on Azure using Databricks as the core component to collect, store, process and serve these volumes of data to every single consumer and beyond in Flanders. This enables the Belgian energy market to innovate and move forward. Maarten took up the role as project manager and solution architect.

In the presentation, we will provide an overview of general in-memory computing principles and the drivers behind it. We will start with a summary of the technical drivers (abundant hardware resources) and market forces (the rise of Big Data). We will cover popular and emerging use cases for in-memory computing, from financial industry trading platforms to mobile payment processing, online advertising, online/mobile gaming back-ends and more. We will then present some foundational concepts and terminology, and discuss considerations around any in-memory solution. From there, we will illustrate how a complete in-memory computing stack like GridGain combines clustering, high performance computing, in-memory data grids, stream processing and Hadoop acceleration into one unified and easy to use platform.

Abstract: Recent projects have stressed the "need for speed" while handling large amounts of data, with near zero downtime. An analysis of multiple environments has identified optimizations and architectures that improve both performance and reliability. The session covers data gathering and analysis, discussing everything from the network (multiple NICs, nearby catalogs, high speed Ethernet), to the latest features of extreme scale. Performance analysis helps pinpoint where time is spent (bottlenecks) and we discuss optimization techniques (MQ tuning, IIB performance best practices) as well as helpful IBM support pacs. Log Analysis pinpoints system stress points (e.g. CPU starvation) and steps on the path to near zero downtime.

Over the last few years we’ve seen a frenzy of interest and buzz around the area of Big Data. Beyond the hype, there is a solid base of growing use cases, which are becoming center stage to most businesses. 2012 was the year of awareness. There was a great amount of sharing from the early core developers of the analytic platforms – showing the rest of the world the capabilities of the tools and platforms that had been developed for special purpose high scale analytics. The big names at the core of open source analytics development include Facebook, eBay, Linkedin, Twitter – all blazing the trail with new approaches. These companies brought along with them a new and expanding interest in leveraging the same technologies for commercial interest. This talk is focused at how a growing number of enterprises that are already heavily invested in the use cases – but by volume, most customers now have some form of big data proof-of-concept underway. These proof of concepts typically start with a thesis of how competitive advantage can be gained through insight from the data.
