Introduction:
A comparison between Divine Principle view
and Doctor Petersons psychological view on
the Bible story and mans life-conditions.

Psychology, is a modern Day media Prophet

Adam ā€“ Eve Story
Number one is, there was a point in time when human
beings were naked, and they werenā€™t ashamed of it.
Number two is, there is a point in time ā€” which is now
ā€” when they are naked, and they are ashamed of it.
The question is, well, what's associated with nakedness
and shame?
That's often given a sexual connotation in classic
interpretations of the Adam and Eve story ā€”
because of itā€™s association with nudity, I presume.
But I think itā€™s a lot more complicated than that.
Jordan Peterson MD
Part of clothing is protection, but a tremendous amount of it
is merely stopping other people from evaluating you too
harshly all the time; it just gets in the way.
Anyways, this story makes the case that, at some point,
we werenā€™t like that. Animals arenā€™t like that,
so it seems perfectly plausible that we werenā€™t like that.
But, at some point, that changed.
Jordan Peterson MD
Adam and Eve are tempted by the snake;
they eat the fruit; they wake up;
they realize they're naked;
they realize that theyā€™re vulnerable;
they realize the future;
they realize they're gonna die;
they realize theyā€™re gonna have to work;
they realize the difficulty in conception,
and the fall of humankind from unconscious paradise.
Ok. That makes sense.
What about the knowledge of good and evil?
Jordan Peterson MD
Human beings wake up (eyes are opened),
and they think,
weā€™re vulnerable ā€” permanently. Itā€™s never going away.
Itā€™s the recognition of that eternal vulnerability.
Jordan Peterson MD
The Mesopotamians believed that human
beings were made out of the blood of Kingu,
who was the worst monster that Tiamat,
the Goddess of chaos, could imagine and then produce.
So their idea was that there as something deeply, deeply,
deeply, demonically flawed about humanity.
That's their conception, and itā€™s out of that same milieu
that these stories emerge.
Jordan Peterson MD
The snake isnā€™t just the snake in the garden,
and the snake isnā€™t just the possible snake,
and the snake isnā€™t just the snake that's your enemy.
The snake is your friend, because your friend can betray you.
And then itā€™s even worse than that, because you can betray
you.
So even if you get rid of all the outside snakes,
youā€™ve got an inside snake, and God only knows what itā€™s up to.

Divine Principle
God created human beings with two components:
the spirit self and the physical self.
The human Fall likewise took place in two
dimensions: the spiritual and the physical.
The fall which took place through the sexual
relationship between the angel and Eve was the
spiritual fall, while the fall which occurred through
the sexual relationship between Eve and Adam
was the physical fall.
Divine Principle
Jesus came as the Messiah for nothing less
than the complete salvation of humanity;
God's Will was to establish the family
foundation for the Messiah through the
dispensation based on Cain and Abel.
When Cain killed Abel and this Will was not
fulfilled,
Divine Principle
God made another attempt to fulfill it through
Noah's family.
When Noah's family also failed to fulfill the
Will, God chose Abraham as yet another
replacement and worked through him.
We also see this with respect to the missions
of individuals: God tried to remedy the failure
to fulfill His Will through Abel by choosing
Seth as his replacement.(Gen. 4:25)
Divine Principle
God tried to fulfill His Will left unaccomplished
by Moses by choosing Joshua in his stead.
(Josh. 1:5)
When God's Will for Judas Iscariot was
nullified by his betrayal of Jesus, God made a
second attempt to fulfill this Will by electing
Matthias in his place.(Acts 1:24-26)
Divine Principle
God gave Isaac twin sons, Esau and Jacob,
with the intention of having them stand in
the positions of Cain and Abel.
They were to make the conditions of
indemnity necessary for accomplishing His
Will to recover the birthright of the elder
brother, which was lost when Cain killed Abel
in Adam's family.
Divine Principle
God intended to realize this Will by having
Jacob (in the position of Abel) win over his
elder brother Esau (in the position of Cain).
Since Esau was in the position of Cain, he
was "hated" by God. Since Jacob was in the
position of Abel, he could receive God's love.
Divine Principle
When Adam's family was in the midway
position, God instructed the children, Cain
and Abel, to offer sacrifices that they might
come into a position where God could work
His providence through them.
Yet because Cain killed Abel, the condition
was made which allowed Satan to claim them
instead.
Divine Principle
God sent Jesus to fallen people that they
might stand on God's side through the
condition of believing in him.
Unfortunately, when he came, many rejected
him and remained on Satan's side.
This is the reason Jesus is both the Savior
and the Lord of judgment.
SunMyungMoon 1968;
When Cain and Abel both made an offering, it
seems that God's position of receiving the
offering of Abel was different from His position
of rejecting the offering of Cain.
However, you should know there was no
difference in God's position dealing with them.
God would have surely accepted Cain's
offering if there was even a trace of
willingness in Cain's heart to go through Abel
who represented God.
SunMyungMoon 1968;
Although there may have been a difference
as to when He would accept it, God tried to
deal with them fairly.
SunMyungMoon 1968;
If Cain did not really care about the offering
that he prepared for God, then it would not
have mattered to him so much whether or not
God received the offering of Abel.
However, what made him furious and
resentful was the thought that his devotion
was inferior to that of Abel.
SunMyungMoon 1968;
When you look at the offering centering on
Abel, he prepared it with the same degree of
devotion as Cain.
Only because Abel was on the side of God
from the beginning, God accepted it.
For this reason, Abel should have been
grateful and humble even if God accepted
only his offering. Then would Cain have tried
to kill him? (No)

Faith And Life - Volume 2 [Part 2]
Yo Han Lee May, 1977
God looks for the Abel -- the one who can
take God's position, share His responsibilities,
and serve.
God searches through the lineage for that
serving person who will follow God's
command no matter what. Someone who will
believe in the unbelievable.
Faith And Life - Volume 1 [Part 2]
Cain and Abel - in church life
In the Old Testament Age, God served man in
the position of servant. Jesus did not live on
earth as an only Son.
He was in the position of the Son of God in
the internal value, still He pursued the mission
of the servant in the practical life.
Jesus was the servant and He was in the
position of John the Baptist when he
transferred the Word to the people. John the
Baptist was in the position of the archangel.
Then Jesus served as the archangel in reality
for three years, even if he had the internal
content of the Messiah sent by God.
Afterward, he should have been able to take
the people to the position of the sons and
daughters of God.
Jesus could stand for the first time in the
position of the Messiah.
The same things applies in the case of the
church leader. He must take the role of the
archangel for some period necessary, maybe
three years or seven years.
During that period he has to gain
12 (spiritual) children who are more dutiful
than himself.
Then, the question occurs whether he is to be
in the position of the Son of God.
In other words, unless you accomplish the
mission of the archangel in the position of
servant in real life and in the position of
parent having the vertical connection with
God in the spiritual life, you cannot go back to
your original position.
At home also, the person who is responsible
for the matter is Abel. Then you must be
humble to Abel and serve gladly and comfort
him when someone also is in the position.
You cannot consider yourself always superior
to others. According to the respective job, the
central figure must suffer in the position of
Abel.
The peace exists there. However, if someone
thinks he should always be Abel, the whole
church must suffer and the family as well.
Therefore, you can learn clearly what is your
position if you understand the above.
Then you can comprehend automatically the
position of others also.

Biblical Series V: Cain and Abel
The Hostile Brothers
by Dr. Jordan Peterson
Ok, so the first thing is that Adam and Eve are not the
first two human beings. Cain and Abel are the first two
human beings. Adam and Eve were made by God, and
they were born in paradise. Itā€™s like, what kind of human
beings are those?
You donā€™t know any human beings like that. Human
beings arenā€™t born in paradise and made by God.
Human beings are born of other human beings.
Thatā€™s the first thing. Itā€™s post-fall. Weā€™re out in history,
now. Weā€™re not in some archetypal beyond ā€” although
we are still, to some degree. Not to the degree that was
the case with the story of Adam and Eve.
Weā€™ve already been thrown out of the garden; weā€™re
already self-conscious; weā€™re already awake; weā€™re
already covered; weā€™re already working.
Weā€™re full-fledged human beings. So you have the first
two human beings: Cain and Abel; prototypical human
beings.
Whatā€™s cool is that humanity enters history at the end of
the story of Adam and Eve, and then the archetypal
patterns for human behaviour are instantaneously
presented.
(Comment: pattern of fallen human behavoiur)
Itā€™s absolutely mind boggling, and itā€™s not a very nice
story. Theyā€™re hostile brothers. Theyā€™ve got their hands
around each otherā€™s throats, so to speak, or at least
thatā€™s the case in one direction. Itā€™s a story of the first
two human beings engaged in a fratricidal struggle, that
ends in the death of the best one of them. Thatā€™s the
story of human beings in history. If that doesnā€™t give
you nightmares, you didnā€™t understand the damn story.
"And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and
bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the
Lord." Thereā€™s the first human being: Cain. I told you
that the Mesopotamians thought that mankind was
made out of the blood of the worst demon that the great
goddess of chaos could imagine.
Well, the first human being is a murderer, and not only
a murderer, but a murderer of his own brother. And so,
you know, the Old Testament, thatā€™s a hell of a harsh
book. And you might think, well, maybe thatā€™s a little bit
too much to bear. And then you might think, yea, and
maybe itā€™s true, too. So thatā€™s something to think about.
There you see a very old representation. Thereā€™s Abel.
Heā€™s got his sheep up on the altar.
Cain is bringing a sheaf of wheat. I donā€™t know exactly
whatā€™s happening here. Blood, or itā€™s a ray, perhaps. Itā€™s
something like that. The overall impression of the
image is that something transcendent is communicating
with this sacrifice.
You think, oh, how primitive. How primitive, that these
people were sacrificing to their God. Itā€™s like, those
people werenā€™t stupid, and this is not primitive.
Whatever it is, itā€™s not primitive. Itā€™s sophisticated
beyond belief.
The idea, as I already pointed out, is that you could
sacrifice something of value, and that that would have
transcendent utility. That is by no means an
unsophisticated idea. In fact, it might be the greatest
idea that human beings ever came up with.
When youā€™re having an argument with someone,
especially someone that you love, itā€™s a good time to
just watch the pictures that flash in the back of your
mind.
Thatā€™s part of, letā€™s say, coming into contact with what
Carl Jung called the shadow.
The shadow is the manifestation of Cain.
Thatā€™s a perfectly good way of thinking about it.
One of the things that Jung said about the shadow ā€”
because Jung was not someone that you mess around
with lightly.
He said the human shadow has roots that reach all the
way to hell. Jung meant that.
Thatā€™s no metaphor for him. He might not have meant it
in the same way that a fundamentalist Christian from
the Southern U.S. might mean it, but I would say that
Jung meant it in a way thatā€™s far more terrifying, and
also far more true. "And Cain was very wroth, and his
countenance fell."
So thereā€™s Abel, burning his offering away, there. Heā€™s
in this sort of relationship withā€¦letā€™s call them the
archetypal figure of culture. The archetypal Father. Itā€™s
something he respects. Thatā€™s the thingā€”the postureā€™s
an indication of respect.
And then thereā€™s Cain, in the background. His face is in
shadow. Heā€™s jealous of whatā€™s happening. Heā€™s going
through the motions, perhaps, and maybe God just
doesnā€™t like him. We donā€™t know. But heā€™s going through
the motions. Heā€™s not very happy about it. Thatā€™s
actually a phrase that you could carve into many
peopleā€™s tombstones as an epitaph for their life: went
through the motions, but wasnā€™t very happy about it.
This is really an interesting one, I think. I donā€™t know
what Godā€™s doing here, exactly. Heā€™s helping ignite the
sacrificial flame. Thatā€™s kind of an interesting idea, I
think, becauseā€¦Letā€™s say you have an impulse to
make a sacrifice.
You think, well, I should change this about my life. Well,
where does that come from, that impulse? It just
manifests itself out of nothing, or you came up with it.
Well, you might want to stop thinking so surely that you
come up with your own thoughts.
You donā€™t come up with your damn dreams, do you?
They just happen. God only knows where they come
from. They come from your brainā€”oh, boy; thatā€™s a
sophisticated answer. They come from your
unconscious. Well, thatā€™s not much better. At least itā€™s
somewhat better.
Those amazing dramas take place in the theater of
your imagination at night. You donā€™t even understand
what they are, and yet they occur night after night.
Dreams can contain wisdom that it justā€¦Well, it just
staggers the person who has the dream once they get
the key to the dream, and once they remember it. Itā€™s
like, oh, look, you just revealed a bunch of wisdom to
yourself that you didnā€™t know. Where did that come
from? You donā€™t know. How in the world can you dream
up things that you donā€™t know? Thatā€™s a tough one.
The idea that thereā€™s something thatā€™s not youā€¦Jung
would call it the Self, which he thought of as the totality
of your being across time and space.
Itā€™s something like that, and that, you know, each
second that you exist is a slice of the Self manifesting
itself across time and space.
He thought of the Self as partly the voice of conscious,
whatever that is, that helps guide you when you have to
make a difficult decision.
A difficult decision might be, well, what do I need to
sacrifice? How do I need to discipline myself? What do
I need to forego?
What thing could I let go of thatā€™s impeding my
progress, that, if I let go of, would make my life better,
and my familyā€™s life better, and my cultureā€™s life better,
and my being better? That would give you something to
do for the day, wouldnā€™t it? And to justify your miserable
life.
You need that. Thatā€™s the whole point of the first story
of Adam and Eve. What do you have? A miserable life.
Ok. What am I going to do about that? Well, if you just
have a miserable life, youā€™re just going to suffer stupidly
and get bitter about it. Thatā€™s what happens to Cain.
Itā€™s like, well, how about not doing that? That just
seems to take a bad deal and make it worse. How
about making a sacrifice, and seeing if you can please
God and put being on track?
God, that would be something to do. What could be
better than that? What could possibly be better than
that? Thatā€™s why itā€™s archetypal, man, because
nothingā€™s better than that. Thatā€™s where it tops out.
You can do that. You can do that every day. You have
to do it in a little way, because what good are you?
Youā€™re not going to go and bring this socialist utopia
into being in one fell swoop.
You might also think that one of the things Cain might
figure out there ā€” there are a couple of things that
arenā€™t just going right for him
Downwind of the fire? Not the right place to blow from.
And the fact that heā€™s enveloped in haze and smoke,
and breathing it in, and the fire isnā€™t burning, might be
an indication that heā€™s doing something wrong, or he
would be wiping his eyes and saying, what kinda stupid
bloody universe would produce smoke like this?
Itā€™s like, yes, well, thatā€™s a more likely outcome.

  • 2. Introduction: A comparison between Divine Principle view and Doctor Petersons psychological view on the Bible story and mans life-conditions. Jordan Peterson; Canadian Prophessor in Psychology, is a modern Day media Prophet with 80 000+ youtube viewers/day (Dec 2018)
  • 3. Adam ā€“ Eve Story Number one is, there was a point in time when human beings were naked, and they werenā€™t ashamed of it. Number two is, there is a point in time ā€” which is now ā€” when they are naked, and they are ashamed of it. The question is, well, what's associated with nakedness and shame? That's often given a sexual connotation in classic interpretations of the Adam and Eve story ā€” because of itā€™s association with nudity, I presume. But I think itā€™s a lot more complicated than that. Jordan Peterson MD
  • 4. Part of clothing is protection, but a tremendous amount of it is merely stopping other people from evaluating you too harshly all the time; it just gets in the way. Anyways, this story makes the case that, at some point, we werenā€™t like that. Animals arenā€™t like that, so it seems perfectly plausible that we werenā€™t like that. But, at some point, that changed. Jordan Peterson MD
  • 5. Adam and Eve are tempted by the snake; they eat the fruit; they wake up; they realize they're naked; they realize that theyā€™re vulnerable; they realize the future; they realize they're gonna die; they realize theyā€™re gonna have to work; they realize the difficulty in conception, and the fall of humankind from unconscious paradise. Ok. That makes sense. What about the knowledge of good and evil? Jordan Peterson MD
  • 6. Human beings wake up (eyes are opened), and they think, weā€™re vulnerable ā€” permanently. Itā€™s never going away. Itā€™s the recognition of that eternal vulnerability. Jordan Peterson MD
  • 7. The Mesopotamians believed that human beings were made out of the blood of Kingu, who was the worst monster that Tiamat, the Goddess of chaos, could imagine and then produce. So their idea was that there as something deeply, deeply, deeply, demonically flawed about humanity. That's their conception, and itā€™s out of that same milieu that these stories emerge. Jordan Peterson MD
  • 8. The snake isnā€™t just the snake in the garden, and the snake isnā€™t just the possible snake, and the snake isnā€™t just the snake that's your enemy. The snake is your friend, because your friend can betray you. And then itā€™s even worse than that, because you can betray you. So even if you get rid of all the outside snakes, youā€™ve got an inside snake, and God only knows what itā€™s up to. Source: Biblical Series IV: Adam and Eve Jordan Peterson MD
  • 9. Divine Principle God created human beings with two components: the spirit self and the physical self. The human Fall likewise took place in two dimensions: the spiritual and the physical. The fall which took place through the sexual relationship between the angel and Eve was the spiritual fall, while the fall which occurred through the sexual relationship between Eve and Adam was the physical fall.
  • 10. Divine Principle Jesus came as the Messiah for nothing less than the complete salvation of humanity; God's Will was to establish the family foundation for the Messiah through the dispensation based on Cain and Abel. When Cain killed Abel and this Will was not fulfilled,
  • 11. Divine Principle God made another attempt to fulfill it through Noah's family. When Noah's family also failed to fulfill the Will, God chose Abraham as yet another replacement and worked through him. We also see this with respect to the missions of individuals: God tried to remedy the failure to fulfill His Will through Abel by choosing Seth as his replacement.(Gen. 4:25)
  • 12. Divine Principle God tried to fulfill His Will left unaccomplished by Moses by choosing Joshua in his stead. (Josh. 1:5) When God's Will for Judas Iscariot was nullified by his betrayal of Jesus, God made a second attempt to fulfill this Will by electing Matthias in his place.(Acts 1:24-26)
  • 13. Divine Principle God gave Isaac twin sons, Esau and Jacob, with the intention of having them stand in the positions of Cain and Abel. They were to make the conditions of indemnity necessary for accomplishing His Will to recover the birthright of the elder brother, which was lost when Cain killed Abel in Adam's family.
  • 14. Divine Principle God intended to realize this Will by having Jacob (in the position of Abel) win over his elder brother Esau (in the position of Cain). Since Esau was in the position of Cain, he was "hated" by God. Since Jacob was in the position of Abel, he could receive God's love.
  • 15. Divine Principle When Adam's family was in the midway position, God instructed the children, Cain and Abel, to offer sacrifices that they might come into a position where God could work His providence through them. Yet because Cain killed Abel, the condition was made which allowed Satan to claim them instead.
  • 16. Divine Principle God sent Jesus to fallen people that they might stand on God's side through the condition of believing in him. Unfortunately, when he came, many rejected him and remained on Satan's side. This is the reason Jesus is both the Savior and the Lord of judgment.
  • 17. SunMyungMoon 1968; When Cain and Abel both made an offering, it seems that God's position of receiving the offering of Abel was different from His position of rejecting the offering of Cain. However, you should know there was no difference in God's position dealing with them. God would have surely accepted Cain's offering if there was even a trace of willingness in Cain's heart to go through Abel who represented God.
  • 18. SunMyungMoon 1968; Although there may have been a difference as to when He would accept it, God tried to deal with them fairly.
  • 19. SunMyungMoon 1968; If Cain did not really care about the offering that he prepared for God, then it would not have mattered to him so much whether or not God received the offering of Abel. However, what made him furious and resentful was the thought that his devotion was inferior to that of Abel.
  • 20. SunMyungMoon 1968; When you look at the offering centering on Abel, he prepared it with the same degree of devotion as Cain. Only because Abel was on the side of God from the beginning, God accepted it. For this reason, Abel should have been grateful and humble even if God accepted only his offering. Then would Cain have tried to kill him? (No)

  • 22. Divine Principle applied by Revelation in Korea Faith And Life - Volume 2 [Part 2] Yo Han Lee May, 1977 God looks for the Abel -- the one who can take God's position, share His responsibilities, and serve. God searches through the lineage for that serving person who will follow God's command no matter what. Someone who will believe in the unbelievable.
  • 23. Faith And Life - Volume 1 [Part 2] Cain and Abel - in church life In the Old Testament Age, God served man in the position of servant. Jesus did not live on earth as an only Son. He was in the position of the Son of God in the internal value, still He pursued the mission of the servant in the practical life.
  • 24. Jesus was the servant and He was in the position of John the Baptist when he transferred the Word to the people. John the Baptist was in the position of the archangel. Then Jesus served as the archangel in reality for three years, even if he had the internal content of the Messiah sent by God. Afterward, he should have been able to take the people to the position of the sons and daughters of God.
  • 25. Jesus could stand for the first time in the position of the Messiah. The same things applies in the case of the church leader. He must take the role of the archangel for some period necessary, maybe three years or seven years. During that period he has to gain 12 (spiritual) children who are more dutiful than himself.
  • 26. Then, the question occurs whether he is to be in the position of the Son of God. In other words, unless you accomplish the mission of the archangel in the position of servant in real life and in the position of parent having the vertical connection with God in the spiritual life, you cannot go back to your original position.
  • 27. At home also, the person who is responsible for the matter is Abel. Then you must be humble to Abel and serve gladly and comfort him when someone also is in the position. You cannot consider yourself always superior to others. According to the respective job, the central figure must suffer in the position of Abel. The peace exists there. However, if someone thinks he should always be Abel, the whole church must suffer and the family as well.
  • 28. Therefore, you can learn clearly what is your position if you understand the above. Then you can comprehend automatically the position of others also. more... https://www.tparents.org/Library/Unification/Books/FaL/Fal-1-2.htm
  • 29. Jordan Peterson (born June 12, 1962) a Canadian clinical psychologist and a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto. His main areas of study are in abnormal, social, and personality psychology, with a particular interest in the psychology of religious and ideological belief, and the assessment and improvement of personality and performance.
  • 30. Biblical Series V: Cain and Abel The Hostile Brothers by Dr. Jordan Peterson Ok, so the first thing is that Adam and Eve are not the first two human beings. Cain and Abel are the first two human beings. Adam and Eve were made by God, and they were born in paradise. Itā€™s like, what kind of human beings are those? You donā€™t know any human beings like that. Human beings arenā€™t born in paradise and made by God. Human beings are born of other human beings.
  • 31. Thatā€™s the first thing. Itā€™s post-fall. Weā€™re out in history, now. Weā€™re not in some archetypal beyond ā€” although we are still, to some degree. Not to the degree that was the case with the story of Adam and Eve. Weā€™ve already been thrown out of the garden; weā€™re already self-conscious; weā€™re already awake; weā€™re already covered; weā€™re already working. Weā€™re full-fledged human beings. So you have the first two human beings: Cain and Abel; prototypical human beings.
  • 32. Whatā€™s cool is that humanity enters history at the end of the story of Adam and Eve, and then the archetypal patterns for human behaviour are instantaneously presented. (Comment: pattern of fallen human behavoiur) Itā€™s absolutely mind boggling, and itā€™s not a very nice story. Theyā€™re hostile brothers. Theyā€™ve got their hands around each otherā€™s throats, so to speak, or at least thatā€™s the case in one direction. Itā€™s a story of the first two human beings engaged in a fratricidal struggle, that ends in the death of the best one of them. Thatā€™s the story of human beings in history. If that doesnā€™t give you nightmares, you didnā€™t understand the damn story.
  • 33. "And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord." Thereā€™s the first human being: Cain. I told you that the Mesopotamians thought that mankind was made out of the blood of the worst demon that the great goddess of chaos could imagine. Well, the first human being is a murderer, and not only a murderer, but a murderer of his own brother. And so, you know, the Old Testament, thatā€™s a hell of a harsh book. And you might think, well, maybe thatā€™s a little bit too much to bear. And then you might think, yea, and maybe itā€™s true, too. So thatā€™s something to think about.
  • 34. There you see a very old representation. Thereā€™s Abel. Heā€™s got his sheep up on the altar. Cain is bringing a sheaf of wheat. I donā€™t know exactly whatā€™s happening here. Blood, or itā€™s a ray, perhaps. Itā€™s something like that. The overall impression of the image is that something transcendent is communicating with this sacrifice.
  • 35. You think, oh, how primitive. How primitive, that these people were sacrificing to their God. Itā€™s like, those people werenā€™t stupid, and this is not primitive. Whatever it is, itā€™s not primitive. Itā€™s sophisticated beyond belief. The idea, as I already pointed out, is that you could sacrifice something of value, and that that would have transcendent utility. That is by no means an unsophisticated idea. In fact, it might be the greatest idea that human beings ever came up with.
  • 36. When youā€™re having an argument with someone, especially someone that you love, itā€™s a good time to just watch the pictures that flash in the back of your mind. Thatā€™s part of, letā€™s say, coming into contact with what Carl Jung called the shadow. The shadow is the manifestation of Cain. Thatā€™s a perfectly good way of thinking about it. One of the things that Jung said about the shadow ā€” because Jung was not someone that you mess around with lightly.
  • 37. He said the human shadow has roots that reach all the way to hell. Jung meant that. Thatā€™s no metaphor for him. He might not have meant it in the same way that a fundamentalist Christian from the Southern U.S. might mean it, but I would say that Jung meant it in a way thatā€™s far more terrifying, and also far more true. "And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell."
  • 38. So thereā€™s Abel, burning his offering away, there. Heā€™s in this sort of relationship withā€¦letā€™s call them the archetypal figure of culture. The archetypal Father. Itā€™s something he respects. Thatā€™s the thingā€”the postureā€™s an indication of respect. And then thereā€™s Cain, in the background. His face is in shadow. Heā€™s jealous of whatā€™s happening. Heā€™s going through the motions, perhaps, and maybe God just doesnā€™t like him. We donā€™t know. But heā€™s going through the motions. Heā€™s not very happy about it. Thatā€™s actually a phrase that you could carve into many peopleā€™s tombstones as an epitaph for their life: went through the motions, but wasnā€™t very happy about it.
  • 39. This is really an interesting one, I think. I donā€™t know what Godā€™s doing here, exactly. Heā€™s helping ignite the sacrificial flame. Thatā€™s kind of an interesting idea, I think, becauseā€¦Letā€™s say you have an impulse to make a sacrifice. You think, well, I should change this about my life. Well, where does that come from, that impulse? It just manifests itself out of nothing, or you came up with it. Well, you might want to stop thinking so surely that you come up with your own thoughts.
  • 40. You donā€™t come up with your damn dreams, do you? They just happen. God only knows where they come from. They come from your brainā€”oh, boy; thatā€™s a sophisticated answer. They come from your unconscious. Well, thatā€™s not much better. At least itā€™s somewhat better. Those amazing dramas take place in the theater of your imagination at night. You donā€™t even understand what they are, and yet they occur night after night.
  • 41. Dreams can contain wisdom that it justā€¦Well, it just staggers the person who has the dream once they get the key to the dream, and once they remember it. Itā€™s like, oh, look, you just revealed a bunch of wisdom to yourself that you didnā€™t know. Where did that come from? You donā€™t know. How in the world can you dream up things that you donā€™t know? Thatā€™s a tough one. The idea that thereā€™s something thatā€™s not youā€¦Jung would call it the Self, which he thought of as the totality of your being across time and space.
  • 42. Itā€™s something like that, and that, you know, each second that you exist is a slice of the Self manifesting itself across time and space. He thought of the Self as partly the voice of conscious, whatever that is, that helps guide you when you have to make a difficult decision. A difficult decision might be, well, what do I need to sacrifice? How do I need to discipline myself? What do I need to forego?
  • 43. What thing could I let go of thatā€™s impeding my progress, that, if I let go of, would make my life better, and my familyā€™s life better, and my cultureā€™s life better, and my being better? That would give you something to do for the day, wouldnā€™t it? And to justify your miserable life. You need that. Thatā€™s the whole point of the first story of Adam and Eve. What do you have? A miserable life. Ok. What am I going to do about that? Well, if you just have a miserable life, youā€™re just going to suffer stupidly and get bitter about it. Thatā€™s what happens to Cain.
  • 44. Itā€™s like, well, how about not doing that? That just seems to take a bad deal and make it worse. How about making a sacrifice, and seeing if you can please God and put being on track? God, that would be something to do. What could be better than that? What could possibly be better than that? Thatā€™s why itā€™s archetypal, man, because nothingā€™s better than that. Thatā€™s where it tops out.
  • 45. You can do that. You can do that every day. You have to do it in a little way, because what good are you? Youā€™re not going to go and bring this socialist utopia into being in one fell swoop. You might also think that one of the things Cain might figure out there ā€” there are a couple of things that arenā€™t just going right for him
  • 46. Downwind of the fire? Not the right place to blow from. And the fact that heā€™s enveloped in haze and smoke, and breathing it in, and the fire isnā€™t burning, might be an indication that heā€™s doing something wrong, or he would be wiping his eyes and saying, what kinda stupid bloody universe would produce smoke like this? Itā€™s like, yes, well, thatā€™s a more likely outcome.
