Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

2. Microsoft Windows 8.1 is often not the first choice of
tablet users when it comes to choosing a friendly
platform. Often, technology users are either
purchasing iPad or Android tablet that seems to be a
convenient option. However you might change your
mind when you go through some valid reasons
mentioned here in favor of Windows 8.1.
3. Snap view
The best feature that Microsoft introduced is the Snap view,
which allows a user to adjust multiple programs or apps in one
window. You will be able to see multiple apps running and
displayed on the screen. This is convenient as it allows you to
work with all the apps at the same time without quitting any
one of them. What more, you can even adjust and resize each
pane for better view. Every Windows 8.1 supported device
features this view at its best.
One thing that you need to remember is that this feature is
available for Galaxy devices only along with restricted apps.
Additionally, android lacks in this ability and has yet to come
out with something similar for its products.
4. Regular Updates
If you are after Android then the biggest thing that comes to
surface is the lack of updates available to users. The updates to
its devices are dependent upon the manufacturers and its
carriers. It is not always that you will be able to get your hands
on that latest version also it is totally the choice of the
manufacturers that the latest device will support the latest OS
version. When we look at Windows devices there are no such
limitations when it comes to OS updates. The updates that are
available for Windows are easily accessible to its devices. The
update process is a lot smoother and easier.
With limitations to updated OS version the worst risk is the
security flaws and patches that need to be done. For this very
reason it seems that Windows is on the top of it all.
5. Better Experience
When it comes to the UI it seems that there are a lot of
improvements to the OS. There are various new features,
tweaked versions and additional programs in the latest version.
These changes in the UI are not minor but major and are very
user friendly. This means that Microsoft has improved each
shortcoming that was in its previous OS version.
6. Sharing made easy
Even though there is sharing feature in Google Chrome but
Windows 8.1 too carries some interesting additions. You will
be delighted to find out that you can easily jot down in
Windows Journal while working on your tablet and instantly
share it using Evernote on cloud. This is the best that comes to
sharing instantly without any hassle. You can even share web
pages in the Reading List app while saving it on the web for
offline reading.
After the above mentioned arguments in favor of Windows, it
seems that most of the reasons are valid enough. Android
might be popular amongst majority of the users but Windows
too have its own advantages that cannot be overlooked.
