2. What is the Preservation
A management function
“its objective is to ensure that information
survives in usable form for as long as it is
wanted”- john Feather (1991)
Not Primarily about :
Conservation or restoration
Storage media or backup regimes
Concepts of “permanence”
6. Digital Preservation:
Digital information is different is the management and protection
of digital resources, i.e. born-digital and converted digital group. )
Technical problems with ensuring continues access (more of this
later)
“Digital preservation aims to ensure that digital media and
information systems are still interpretable into the indefinite
future (Ross, Seamus (2006).”
-But also a managerial problem
“…the planning, resource allocation, and application of
preservation methods and technologies to ensure that digital
information of continuing value remains accessible and usable”-
Margaret Hedstrom (1198)
2.1 What is the Preservation
7. 2.3 What is the Preservation
“Archiving” “Archives” “Digitisation”
A term used in some
computing contexts
fro the creation of
secure backup copies,
Sometimes used
(loosely) in
preservation contexts
A well-understood and
discussed term in
archives and
recordkeeping
professions, but is also
used informally to
refer to almost any
collection of digital
‘stuff’, e.g., e-print
archives, image
archives, etc.
The conversion of
non-digital
objects into
digital form
The phrase ‘digital
preservation’ was
used
Some confusing terminology:
8. The DL consists of print and electronic documents including
audio and video materials, used for the purpose of scientific
research and development. “Increasingly our possessions and
our communications are no longer material: they’re digital and
they are dependent on making them accessible. As new
technology emerges and current technology becomes obsolete
we need to actively manage our DP to help protect them and
keep them available for years to come (LOC).”
There is an ever ever-increasing level of information being in a
digital set-up by all of us whether in the individual or specialized
sphere.
3.Need of DLP
9. The figure explains about the storage media. Throughout history, the trend in storage
media development has intended every novel technology is 1000 times smaller, can
the store 1000s of times more information, but has only 1/10 of the expected lifetime
of the previous generation.
4. Life cycle of Digital media

10. 4.1 Life cycle of Digital media
Library of Congress:
The average life of a website is only 44-100 days.
The British Library:
50% of websites archived by the British Library are lost from the live web after just one year.
Tubular insights:
By 2025, 90 % of the world’s internet traffic will be video
163 Zettabytes:
In 2015 Google estimated there were 300 exabytes of human-made information in the
world. Current annual data creation rate is 163 in 2025.
CDM:
The lifetime of some CDs is only 10-20 years
PDF Association:
Eight Number of these considered ‘archival, for long-term preservation.

11. Preparation Proceed Review
Preparation is
responsible for
identifying of digital
contents (text,
video, audio), DLP
methodology and
issues, suitable
software for
digitization and
preservation (i.e.
Archimede,
DAITSS, etc.) and
making
preservation
policies.
Proceed is
putting into
practice. It
consists of
management of
digital security
and protection,
accessibility and
preservation of
digital resources
and under
Review and
purview of
institution or
librarian for the
establishment
and
implementation
of DLP
programme.
5. About the PPR Model
13. Durability: Durability in databases is the property that ensures transactions are
saved permanently and do not accidentally disappear or get erased, even during a
database crash. This is usually achieved by saving all transactions to a non–volatile
storage medium.
Selection: Selection is the most important and various roles playing here, i.e.
selection of resources for DLP technology and media, formats. When we are
choosing any type of the selection procedure, its play a significant role in the
achievement of preservation preparation work.
Standard: The standard defines the excellence of digital resource essential in
three steps, 1. Is it for the duration of the groundwork of workflow, 2 is considering,
when deciding, choosing and managing digital capturing, or third is referred to the
delivery or right to use time, estimate download time and user-friendly set-up.
Integrity: If anyone can remove, original software, hardware and storage media
on which the digital resource was created, compiled, accessed and maintained,
integrity is perhaps protecting the admittance of digital resources. Protecting the
digital integrity of digital resources also involves increasing methods for verifying its
alteration from the original format.
Right to use: Right to use defines as an access. Right to use to a digital resource
is a key factor of contemplation when the library is putting the valuable document,
contents for offline/online access. It is a policy issue of the library to give the right to
use its digital resources.
Preparation
6.1 P: Following steps of Underlying preparation for DLP
15. The following approaches to help smoothly
proceed to DLP program:
Proceed
7. P-proceed
.
Selection- decides and collects to born-digital materials,
commitment the libraries are making to a digital entity is essential
to a well-managed DL.
Rights management- it is the most challenging aspects
around the development of a digital collection as well as
DP
Right and circulated to Access- the ability to sustain
circulated access right is very important in a world in the digital
age, therefore, all digital resources check to IPR policy.
Publishing- creates a wide range of publishing
options, mainly as researchers and authors.
16. Rapid growth: the libraries are committed to the long-
term preservation of the selected resource
Sustainability: DP is an integral part of DL
Management: processes, policies and the institutional
assurance are clearly recognized
Partnership: points of preservation and time promises
determined by selectors, curators in discussion with
technical experts.
Flexibility: ensure, the library will involve in the
development of DP community standards, practice, and
solutions.
Expertise: Authority commits to constantly updating staff
proficiency, where suitable as technologies transform.
Rights: authority has commits to intellectual property
and other rights on providing access that impacts DP
efforts.

18. Apply the OAIS reference model for DLP
“The Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model is an
international standard 14721:2012 developed for preserving electronic
records and information over the long term. The model is a conceptual
framework for digital archiving and doesn’t require any specific platform or
system (ISO, 2012).”

Intellectual Property Rights issue for DLP
As a part of DLP, “IPR issues are not easy in the process, where migration
of document, archival copies, derivate version and other states of an object
exist, over a period of time. Meeting legal requirements for preserving
digital resources require careful, comprehensive, ongoing approaches that
risk to the organization (Chadda, RK, 2009).”

9. R-Benefits of Digital Preservation
The National Digital Preservation Program (NDPP) defines the following
benefits of Digital Preservation:-
23. According to Thom Carter (2012) the following high level benefits of the Digital
Preservation
• library's paper holdings, digital collections will be
preserved according to recognised standards.
Preservation of the library's digital
collections
• Preservation of the library's digital collections will ensure that
they can continue to be accessed both locally and remotely by a
wide audience, including students and academic researchers.
Increased access for wider
audiences
• Staff will develop knowledge of digital preservation
challenges and solutions.
Knowledge and expertise
• The library will continue to attract deposits of digital archive
collections and will be able to offer assurances that these
collections will be adequately curated and preserved.
Digital acquisitions
• The library will be able to participate in collaborative projects
with other institutions e.g. to create online resources based
around digital archive collections.
Opportunities to participate in
collaborative projects
• The library will work with other institutions to share
digital preservation challenges and solutions.
Participation in the wider digital
preservation community
9.1 R-Benefits of Digital Preservation
24. The 21st century called a digital era, because it’s silently
changed to, print information to digital and born-
digital information. However, the challenge is how to
preserve and secure digital information in the DL. In
the library, preservation concerns two forms of
information; i.e. born digital or digital (digitally created
i.e. scan process etc.). So, the paper has discussed
which resource to preserve, with the expansion of the
new innovative ICT era and explanations of DPS. The
DLP preparation methodologies also clarify to the
process of DLP preparation. The underlying preparation
of DLP is responsible for ensuring and accessing digital
data; and to choose software selection for DLP program.
