The document discusses deck safety and recommends regular inspections. Improper installation can result in accidents from unstable or collapsing decks. Decks should be securely attached with metal hardware rather than nails or screws to ensure stability. Over time, metal connectors and wood can corrode or rot, compromising the deck's structure. Signs like wide gaps between the deck and house, sagging boards, or cracked wood may indicate needed repairs. The company offers free deck inspections and will present on deck safety at a home expo on January 24th to help homeowners identify and address potential issues.

How safe is Your Deck?
There are reports each year of deck
accidents that result in injury and in some
cases, even death. Proper deck installation
is crucial for the safety of your friends and
family. When it comes to deck safety,
there are some things you need to know.
One of the most common deck issues is
improper attachment to the house. Decks
should never be attached with nails and
screws. They should be attached with fasteners and metal hardware
connectors to insure safety and stability. If you notice the gap between the
deck and your home is getting wider, you may need to have the bolts
tightened.
Some metal connectors, nails and screws can corrode over time. Since these
objects are essentially holding your deck together, it is important have them
inspected regularly. The most durable hardware is stainless steel or hot-
dipped galvanized steel.
Rotting wood on your deck will cause it to be unstable. Another thing to look
out for is sagging boards. If you stand in the middle of your deck and
bounce slightly, you should not feel any sagging. If you do, you may have a
problem. When the wood on your deck has signs of wood rot, it is no longer
capable of supporting normal, expected amounts of weight.
As wood gets old, it can begin to crack. This is especially common if you live
in an area that gets a lot of rain or snow. The overall condition of the wood
may look fine but if you see many cracks, you should probably have your
deck inspected to see if the cracked boards need to be replaced.
