Toys were pulled from the shelves of retailers, media frenzy ensued and public pressure was mounting. By the time the dust had settled from the
recall, Mattel had recalled over 19 million toys that were produced in China. Their stock price had declined as they took a $40 million charge for the

with a net worth of $19.48 billion. Demand for toys is vastly seasonal with nearly 70% of toy sales taking place before, during, and just after the
Christmas season. Because of this, it is important for those within the toy industry to predict demand during peak season in order to avoid heavy
markdowns after the holidays. Lego's largest competitors are Mattel and Hasbro. However, with Lego's net income as a percentage of sales at an
impressive 24%, they greatly surpass Mattel and Hasbro with net income coming in at 14% and 7%, respectively.

The United States has some of the strictest toy safety standards and regulations in the world. Any toy intended for use by children age 12 and under
must be third party tested and certified with a Children's Product Certificate (CPSC). However, not every section of the Children's Product Certificate
may apply to any given toy. The document is lengthy with a multitude of provisions. Each provision may not necessarily may to any given toy. For
example, toys that don't make and noise would not need to adhere to sound provisions. Although certain sections may be exempt, each applicable

Mattel's shareholders have profits at stake because with such a scandalous issue at that time of the year, which is every toy company's busiest time
of year, the profits go down due to the doubt in consumer's minds about the safety of the products, so their value of stock goes down or up depending

The Lego Group : A Company
The LEGO Group is a privately held company that is family owned. It's headquartered in Billund, Denmark and has main offices located in China,
London, Shanghai, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen in a carpenter shop that
eventually lead to the LEGO we all know today. Most of their products are based off the trademarked LEGO brick. The name of the company is a
combination of two danish words, "leg godt", which translates into play well. The company was passed from father to son and continues to remain
family owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, grandchild of the original founder.
A couple of interesting things occurred to Lego in its development during the1940s. Denmark was occupied by the Germans and forced Godtfred Kirk
Christiansen, who was planning to study in Germany, to instead become a manager at LEGO. In 1955 Godtfred demonstrated the new product at a toy
fair in Nuremberg Germany, receiving negative reactions. Before developing a market analysis department in 1959,the stud–and–tube coupling system
that we see in every brick to this day becomes patented in 1958, the same year Ole passed away, granting Godtfred as the new owner of the company.
