The project values the cultural, natural & regional connections. It preserves the national interest to relate buildings and
topography. It strengthens the historical expansion of the city connecting the Odenplan to the Reflecting Pond via the central
corridor & new plaza.
The Library sits along one of the glaciofluvial
eskers that formed the topography of Stockholm.
The new building’s crystalline forms draw inspira-
tion from the glacial ice that created the hill against
which Gunnar Asplund’s library was built.
The roof plaza focuses attention on this
ancient hill in a way that underscores its
civic importance.

The media collections are grouped according to subject and can
be accessed by elevator and by the grand stairway. The stairway
connects the various levels via a large triangular opening at the
center of the main media collections volume. At the top, skylights
placed like shards of ice catch the sun over the hill year round.
The crystalline triangular volume sited adjacent to Observatory Hill
houses the media collections. The Swedish Institute for Children’s
Books is at its top floor. Programming is flexible due to large open
floor areas. Administration, staff and management functions are
found on the lowest level. A restaurant faces the terrace through the
‘prow’ of the triangular crystalline volume. Visitor oriented activities
form a hub between the existing building and the addition.
The Asplund library houses the adult and children’s fiction collections;
the narrative strength of this Asplund’s design is sympathetic with
literature. The learning center is located in the refurbished bazaar
buildings, allowing it to be open on an around-the-clock basis.
Concept-Inanageofshrinkingpolaricecapsandalpineglaciersthisproposalconceptually
recreates part of a glacier that once covered the site. The new extension’s crystalline forms
draw inspiration from the glacial ice that created the hill against which Gunnar Asplund’s
library was built. The new project is then both ‘glaciär’ and ‘bibliotek’, thus ‘glaciärtek’.
Site and Massing - The proposal calls for the replacement of the existing Annex buildings
with a new library extension. The new building reinforces the unique qualities of the existing
Asplund library and restores some of the important topographical and cultural values of the
larger site.
The primary volume of the new library extension is sited such that its north face maintains
and visually extends the east-west bias of the Odenplan. This triangular form is placed
against the hill, revealing a greater portion of the west façade of Asplund’s building from
Odenplan and metro.
A new public plaza is accessed via formal stair and ramps. This plaza is effectively an
outdoor room formed by the west wall of the Asplund library, the north face of Observatory
Hill and intruded on by the glassy ‘prow’ of the media collection volume. The new plaza
focuses attention on this ancient hill in a way that underscores its civic importance and
strengthens the connection to the existing plaza and reflecting pool to the south of the
original library.
Circulation - A reference to Asplund’s idea of terraces leading up to Observatory Hill, the
new building’s roof is an occupiable landscape with pedestrian paths. Its slanted planar
forms lead from the plaza up to a roof terrace then cross over to the hill. Entrances into
the new building are placed along this pathway.
The central hall or ‘crevasse’ slices east-west through the interior of the addition. It
separates public assembly-oriented spaces from the media collections housed in the
triangular building volume to the south. This hall provides interior semi-public circulation
linking Odengataan to the park beside Sveavägen. It also provides access between the new
and existing buildings, linking the two structures to form a fully integrated library facility.
