What is the main point of each paragraph? Main point of paragraph 1: Main point of paragraph 2: Sample response to short answer question (200-300 words) If you were to 'bring back' a concept or practice from the pre-contact Maori economy today, which concept or practice would you choose and why? In the lecture on pre-contact Mori economies with Martin Fisher, we learnt about how the concept of mana influences distribution. If I were to bring back a concept today, I would think about mana-enhancing distribution. According to the reading by Dell et al. (2018), distribution is tied in with mana, where mana is attained by how much passes through one's hands rather than how much accumulates in one's hands. Today, distribution in businesses focuses on the maximisation of shareholder wealth, but Mori economies were, and to an extent still are, driven by the accumulation of mana which is reciprocal. One accumulated mana through the distribution and exchange of surplus goods. Thinking about contemporary distribution practices as about how much passes through rather than how much accumulates provides alternative possibilities for distribution. For example, despite New Zealand being an important food producer globally, we have food insecurity, a 'cost of living crisis' with high food prices central to this, and many alternate sources of food destroyed in pursuit of food for export and profit. Distributional obligations in Mori society prevented this from occurring within communities, despite actual food scarcity issues based on seasonality. Socio-cultural relations directly influenced decisions over production and distribution of resources, rather than the overriding profit imperative. It would be beneficial to think carefully through the obligations of food distribution within and beyond communities rather than defaulting to profit for shareholders..
