2. Candy Canes and CarrotsWhen Chesterfield Elementary heard about the Humane Society of Missouri’s November horse rescue in Andrew County, they sprang to action and collected items for the rescued animals. Horses love peppermint, so the students organized a drive for candy canes and carrots, of course! The students also launched a program to educate their peers about the plight of abused horses.
3. Scouting for Animals Brandon Wiehlchose to help the animals with his Eagle Scout project. He designed and built five incredible dog houses and donated them to the Humane Society of Missouri. The houses are used by HSMO’s Animal Cruelty Task Force when they find an animal in dire need of shelter.
4. Holiday Giving Holly Dunkelberg let her fourth grade students at Bristol Elementary choose a charity to assist in lieu of giving her gifts for Christmas this year. They chose the Humane Society as the recipient and are in the process of organizing a school wide donation effort in their teacher's honor.
5. Supply Drive A group of girl scouts seeking their Bronze Award collected toys and treats in front of the Wentzville Wal-Mart and donated a truckload of supplies for the HSMO adoption centers and Longmeadow Rescue Ranch.
6. Puppy Mill AwarenessThird graders at St. Joan of Arc school in St. Louis used their Homecoming parade float as an opportunity to spread awareness about puppy mill abuses. Along with throwing out candy, they also passed out literature about puppy mills.
7. Rockin’ for a CauseGunnar and Lydia had a booth at Harvest Festival in Maryland Heights. They worked during the summer to find and paint rocks, which they sold and donated their proceeds to HSMO. They made dog treats, paw print suckers and magnets.
