The Fund For Animals
Needs Your Help!
The Fund for Animals Annual Campaign
It’s that time of year again for The Fund for Animals Annual Campaign. We hope that you will consider making a donation to
support our important work for animals. Your donation will help to provide veterinary care, rehabilitation and release efforts
of wildlife, and sanctuary services at all of our animal care centers. Horses once tethered to stalls for years find refuge at the
Duchess Sanctuary. Animals once abused and neglected can live peaceful and private lives at the Cleveland Amory Black
Beauty Ranch. At The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, injured native wildlife is rehabilitated and released, and the center’s
permanent residents—wild animals once a part of the exotic pet trade—will live out their lives cared for and undisturbed. And at
the Cape Wildlife Center injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife are given a second chance at life.
Please consider making a special gift today to help animals.

The Fund for Animals was founded in
1967 by prominent author and animal
advocate Cleveland Amory. For more
than four decades, The Fund has
spearheaded significant events in
the history of the animal protection
movement by employing national
advocacy campaigns, rescue operations
and operating a network world-famous
animal care facilities.
The Fund’s historic victories have saved
thousands of animals from cruelty and suffering and is a leader in direct animal care
centers providing veterinary care, rehabilitation and release efforts, and sanctuary for
abused and abandoned animals throughout the United States. The Fund has won legal
actions to protect endangered species and prevent inhumane hunting and trapping
practices. The Fund’s current advocacy programs seek to protect wildlife from toxic
lead poisoning, stop canned hunts, prevent the commercial trade in wildlife
parts, and more.
The Fund’s direct animal care operations provide veterinary treatment for thousands of
animals year-round, while training volunteers and supporting their local communities.
We hope you will help us continue our important work for animals by making a
contribution to our Annual Campaign today.
Alexander
Abandoned in a cage with no food or
water, he now spends his days lounging
in the sun.
Alexander was part of an exotic pet
rescue in Atchison, Kansas. He was one
of about a dozen dangerous wild animals
who had been abandoned by their
owner—left without food or water in cages
that were inadequate in size and security.
Alexander is now being cared for in a
safe environment at the Cleveland Amory
Black Beauty Ranch.

The Cleveland Amory Black
Beauty Ranch
The Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch
is a world-renowned animal sanctuary in
Murchison, Texas. The ranch was founded
in 1979 by author and animal advocate
Cleveland Amory. And in 2005 the board
of directors of The Fund for Animals voted
unanimously to memorialize its late, great
founder by renaming its flagship animal
sanctuary in his honor.
With over 1,400 acres, it is home to almost 1,000 domestic and exotic animals, many of whom
have been rescued from near-death situations such as slaughterhouses, biomedical research
laboratories and trophy hunting ranches. Others have been rescued from roadside zoos or
were former victims of the exotic pet trade. Still others came from public lands where they were
threatened with extermination by the federal government. Bison and cattle, horses and burros,
antelope and apes, camels and tigers: all have permanent, safe homes at the ranch.
The Sanctuary is also home to the Doris Day Equine Center, which focuses on developing optimum
programs to elevate the public perception of horses rescued from cruelty and neglect. In addition to
our hands-on rescue, rehabilitation, training and placement of equines, we serve as a resource and
support system to rescue centers around the country.
Please consider making a gift today to help us continue caring for these special animals.
Midge
Freed from the lab, he now spends his
days playing and laughing with his
own family.
Midge was rescued from a research
facility where he lived for 22 years. During
that time he spent nine years confined
to a cage and routinely infected with
Hepatitis B and other live viruses.
Midge has left the lab behind him and is
now a member of our chimp family at the
Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch
where he enjoys playing with magazines
and racing around his enclosure.

The Fund For Animals
Wildlife Center
The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center located
in Ramona, California is a 13-acre facility
providing medical and rehabilitative care for
native predatory species of wild mammals
and birds. A fully equipped medical center
and trained staff and volunteers ensure that
the special needs of ill, injured, or orphaned
wildlife can be met year-round.
The center specializes in hawks, owls,
eagles, skunks, coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions. A 150-foot, free-flight enclosure enables
birds of prey—from Cooper’s hawks to Golden eagles—to exercise their atrophied muscles after
recovering from illness or injury. Once rehabilitated, the birds are released back into their
home territory.
Enclosures for mammals are spacious and comfortable, allowing the orphaned youngsters and
injured adults to get plenty of exercise and same-species companionship with minimal human
contact. Young animals are raised to learn their species-specific behaviors so they develop the
survival skills necessary for life in the wild. Sick or injured adults are offered a safe retreat to
recuperate until they are well enough to once again fend for themselves. Once healed, the adults
are released back into the areas from which they came to keep naturally occurring
populations in balance.
Please consider making a gift today to help us continue caring for these special animals.
Hannah Shirley
Rescued from a cramped and inhumane
backyard enclosure, she now spends her
days relaxing in her own natural pond.
Hannah Shirley – a 40-year-old Pygmy
Hippo – was discovered in 2002 living
illegally in the suburban backyard of a
private citizen.
Luckily for Hannah Shirley, she was
rescued and transported to The Fund for
Animals Wildlife Center, where she has
a 13,000 square-foot paddock, complete
with a swimming pool and a natural pond
to play in.

LONDON
A
PerfectDay
In
By Matt Smith
Breakfast
The first of London’s denizens to stir are the
traders at Borough Market, stocking London’s
larders for over seven centuries; at weekends,
gourmets flock for artisan breads, cheeses
and game, but on weekdays, wholesalers hawk
fruit and vegetables from 2am-8am. Join the
eponymous barrow boys slaking their thirst in
the Market Porter pub, open from 6am.
Perk up with a caffeine boost and breakfast at
Monmouth Coffee, then walk east to cross Tower
Bridge and admire the 11th-century Tower of
London. But there’s no time to explore that
Norman bastion. Instead, hop aboard a Thames
Clipper water bus sailing west from Tower
Pier. From the deck, tick off architectural and
historical glories as you sweep past: to your
right, the Monument – Sir Christopher Wren’s
memorial to the Great Fire of 1666 – then Wren’s
towering achievement, dome-hatted St Paul’s
Cathedral. Looming left are Shakespeare’s Globe
– a re-creation of the Bard’s most-famous theatre
– then Tate Modern, the imposing contemporary
art space, and the starkly blocky South Bank arts
complex, which is a magical, bustling riverbank
enclave, especially after dark.
Morning
Disembark at Waterloo Pier, opposite the
Gothic might of the Houses of Parliament and
Westminster Abbey; a ‘flight’ aboard the greatest
of ferris wheels, the London Eye in the Jubilee
Gardens, South Bank is worth 30 precious minutes
of your day for a unique aerial perspective.
Cross Golden Jubilee Bridge – on the east side,
for vistas back along the Thames – to stand in
Trafalgar Square, the heart from which London’s
arteries spread. Nelson’s Column is behind you;
over your left shoulder The Mall, sweeping along to
Buckingham Palace. Ahead is the National Gallery,
housing over 2,300 artworks; it’s vast and free, so
be selective: enjoy the serenity of Leonardo Da
Vinci’s ‘Cartoon’. Walk east into Covent Garden;
dodge jugglers and human statues in the piazza to
find the Rock & Sole Plaice for a traditional British
fish-and-chip lunch.
Afternoon
Cross north to the British Museum, London’s
truly unmissable – and free – collection of art
and history in an equally wonderful building;
circuit the Great Court, topped by Sir Norman
Foster’s striking glass canopy, and gaze in awe
at Egyptian mummies, the Elgin Marbles and
countless other world treasures.
Dip back south for a pint at the Princess Louise,
arguably London’s grandest Victorian pub, all
dark wood, etched glass and lively snugs.
Time for some park life: stroll north-west
to Regent’s Park – 200 years old in 2010 –
watching Londoners eat, play, chat and flirt en
route to London Zoo, encapsulating the world of
wildlife with almost 750 species in naturalistic
enclosures. Walk south down Marylebone High
St, following your nose to the enticing aromas of
superb cheesemonger La Fromagerie . Smile at
Frans Hals’ masterpiece, The Laughing Cavalier,
in the Wallace Collection at Hertford House,
Manchester Square, then delve in among the
opulent streets of Mayfair.
Evening
Start the evening with a cocktail at the Coburg
Bar (The Connaught, Carlos Place, Mayfair), a
gorgeously chic yet welcoming affair. Peckish?
East is Soho, with Oriental restaurants galore in
Chinatown, although the style-hungry head for
The Ivy at 1-5 West St, Covent Garden – if they
remembered to book.
You’re in the heart of
theatreland, but another
London landmark beckons:
Ronnie Scott’s, home of live jazz
for over 50 years.
And there’s still sustenance
for the end of your 24-hour
marathon: Brick Lane Beigel
Bake dishes up fine salt-beef
bagels day and night – just right
for a barrow-boy’s breakfast
before starting all over again…
“And if you want to try to sample
even a fraction of that life in a day,
you’ll need plenty of stamina – and a
very early start.”
The National Gallery houses over 2,300 artworks, including masterpieces by
Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Titian. Entrance to the museum is free.
Aerial view showing Big Ben, Westiminster Abbey, The Golden Jubilee Bridge,
The Eye of London ferris wheel, and The House of Parliament.
‘When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life,’ asserted Dr Samuel Johnson, 18th-
century England’s foremost man of letters. Trite but true: London is life. It’s park life, street
life and sporting life, still life, private life and life lived in public; it’s animal life, plant life
and human life of every colour, creed and tongue. And if you want to try to sample even a
fraction of that life in a day, you’ll need plenty of stamina – and a very early start.

Midge was rescued from a research facility where he lived for 22 years. During that time he spent nine years confined to a cage and routinely infected with Hepatitis B and other live viruses. Midge has left the lab behind him and is now a member of our chimp family at the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch where he enjoys playing with magazines and racing around his enclosure. Donate Now ADOPT ME The Fund For Animals Wildlife Center The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center located in Ramona, California is a 13-acre facility providing medical and rehabilitative care for native predatory species of wild mammals and birds. A fully equipped medical center and trained staff and volunteers ensure that the special needs of ill, injured, or orphaned wildlife can be met year-round. The center specializes in hawks, owls, eagles, skunks, coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions. A 150-foot, free-flight enclosure enables birds of prey—from Cooper’s hawks to Golden eagles—to exercise their atrophied muscles after recovering from illness or injury. Once rehabilitated, the birds are released back into their home territory. Enclosures for mammals are spacious and comfortable, allowing the orphaned youngsters and injured adults to get plenty of exercise and same-species companionship with minimal human contact. Young animals are raised to learn their species-specific behaviors so they develop the survival skills necessary for life in the wild. Sick or injured adults are offered a safe retreat to recuperate until they are well enough to once again fend for themselves. Once healed, the adults are released back into the areas from which they came to keep naturally occurring populations in balance. Please consider making a gift today to help us continue caring for these special animals. Hannah Shirley Rescued from a cramped and inhumane backyard enclosure, she now spends her days relaxing in her own natural pond. Hannah Shirley – a 40-year-old Pygmy Hippo – was discovered in 2002 living illegally in the suburban backyard of a private citizen. Luckily for Hannah Shirley, she was rescued and transported to The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, where she has a 13,000 square-foot paddock, complete with a swimming pool and a natural pond to play in. • 7. Diann Mistelske diann@diannm.com (216) 659-6080 LONDON A PerfectDay In By Matt Smith Breakfast The first of London’s denizens to stir are the traders at Borough Market, stocking London’s larders for over seven centuries; at weekends, gourmets flock for artisan breads, cheeses and game, but on weekdays, wholesalers hawk fruit and vegetables from 2am-8am. Join the eponymous barrow boys slaking their thirst in the Market Porter pub, open from 6am. Perk up with a caffeine boost and breakfast at Monmouth Coffee, then walk east to cross Tower Bridge and admire the 11th-century Tower of London. But there’s no time to explore that Norman bastion. Instead, hop aboard a Thames Clipper water bus sailing west from Tower Pier. From the deck, tick off architectural and historical glories as you sweep past: to your right, the Monument – Sir Christopher Wren’s memorial to the Great Fire of 1666 – then Wren’s towering achievement, dome-hatted St Paul’s Cathedral. Looming left are Shakespeare’s Globe – a re-creation of the Bard’s most-famous theatre – then Tate Modern, the imposing contemporary art space, and the starkly blocky South Bank arts complex, which is a magical, bustling riverbank enclave, especially after dark. Morning Disembark at Waterloo Pier, opposite the Gothic might of the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey; a ‘flight’ aboard the greatest of ferris wheels, the London Eye in the Jubilee Gardens, South Bank is worth 30 precious minutes of your day for a unique aerial perspective. Cross Golden Jubilee Bridge – on the east side, for vistas back along the Thames – to stand in Trafalgar Square, the heart from which London’s arteries spread. Nelson’s Column is behind you; over your left shoulder The Mall, sweeping along to Buckingham Palace. Ahead is the National Gallery, housing over 2,300 artworks; it’s vast and free, so be selective: enjoy the serenity of Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘Cartoon’. Walk east into Covent Garden; dodge jugglers and human statues in the piazza to find the Rock & Sole Plaice for a traditional British fish-and-chip lunch. Afternoon Cross north to the British Museum, London’s truly unmissable – and free – collection of art and history in an equally wonderful building; circuit the Great Court, topped by Sir Norman Foster’s striking glass canopy, and gaze in awe at Egyptian mummies, the Elgin Marbles and countless other world treasures. Dip back south for a pint at the Princess Louise, arguably London’s grandest Victorian pub, all dark wood, etched glass and lively snugs. Time for some park life: stroll north-west to Regent’s Park – 200 years old in 2010 – watching Londoners eat, play, chat and flirt en route to London Zoo, encapsulating the world of wildlife with almost 750 species in naturalistic enclosures. Walk south down Marylebone High St, following your nose to the enticing aromas of superb cheesemonger La Fromagerie . Smile at Frans Hals’ masterpiece, The Laughing Cavalier, in the Wallace Collection at Hertford House, Manchester Square, then delve in among the opulent streets of Mayfair. Evening Start the evening with a cocktail at the Coburg Bar (The Connaught, Carlos Place, Mayfair), a gorgeously chic yet welcoming affair. Peckish? East is Soho, with Oriental restaurants galore in Chinatown, although the style-hungry head for The Ivy at 1-5 West St, Covent Garden – if they remembered to book. You’re in the heart of theatreland, but another London landmark beckons: Ronnie Scott’s, home of live jazz for over 50 years. And there’s still sustenance for the end of your 24-hour marathon: Brick Lane Beigel Bake dishes up fine salt-beef bagels day and night – just right for a barrow-boy’s breakfast before starting all over again… “And if you want to try to sample even a fraction of that life in a day, you’ll need plenty of stamina – and a very early start.” The National Gallery houses over 2,300 artworks, including masterpieces by Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Titian. Entrance to the museum is free. Aerial view showing Big Ben, Westiminster Abbey, The Golden Jubilee Bridge, The Eye of London ferris wheel, and The House of Parliament. ‘When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life,’ asserted Dr Samuel Johnson, 18th- century England’s foremost man of letters. Trite but true: London is life. It’s park life, street life and sporting life, still life, private life and life lived in public; it’s animal life, plant life and human life of every colour, creed and tongue. And if you want to try to sample even a fraction of that life in a day, you’ll need plenty of stamina – and a very early start. Project: Magazine Spread Layout Skills: InDesign, Illustrator
